      If you think it's a loss then its the same as with any car or collectable.. if you just parked it or never opened it, it would be worth xxx times what you paid once they become rare enough that demand pushes up the price(just like bitcoin did with the difficulty increases) But very few people do that.

    Why not split the backpack into two SKUs, one $25 discounted backpack very clearly marked as single-layer, and one full-price backpack replacing the existing one with both layers? I'm sure there are people that would still buy the single-layer seeing how beat up the mining pack was and how well it was still holding together. At least then you could recoup some of the cost for trade-ins and shipping.

      That is likely what they will be doing for the remaining stock of single layer backpacks they have. They are giving 25$ credits to everyone who bought the single layer one, so it's wise to just subtract that amount in new sales.

    • @jacobgame2757
      @jacobgame2757 9 месяцев назад +7

      They have to be careful not to cannibalise their own sales. I've never had a bag fail the way the double lining will protect against, so if 90% of people go for the discounted one, then there is a huge loss of potential income. It depends how much the actual product costs to make (in this case you can ignore R&D cost as they are the same on both versions).

    • @TheOriginalFaxon
      @TheOriginalFaxon 9 месяцев назад

      @@Duaality. I did not, AMD has an inordinate lead over Intel in the mobile sector (which is what that segment was about), there is no world in which I would recommend an Intel CPU to any of my family or friends in that sector, therefore I can disregard it wholesale as it's simply a waste of my time to help educate them about it. I was not distracted by hatred of intel, but by the fact that AMD's battery life and power draw numbers are superior at most given performance points, and they get better the higher in performance you go, relative to intel's. I don't even hate intel at all, what I hate is pompous holier than thou marketing when both sides are in the thick of it, but at least AMD isn't doing dumb bullshit like this. It's enough to get me to not consider intel on principle if that were my only deciding factor, and yes AMD has done some of the same things, but not nearly as egregiously, and they've at least been pushing performance numbers up consistently, I sat on my 4790k for far too long without any viable upgrade options (i consider any CPU that's less than 15-20% faster to be a nonviable upgrade for a personal PC, and anything less than 30-40% to be a minimum viable upgrade), and then it died and I literally couldn't afford the equivalent CPU, and had to literally downgrade at the time or cut into funds I'd allocated for business investments instead. I don't have the time to explain to my own family all the details of why they should pick X over Y or vice versa. If someone makes a great video like this explaining it all, I'm gonna recommend it, even if it's from the competitor of the company whose products I'm actually recommending to them more generally.

    From a business perspective, the backpack bottom issue is a major bummer... A good learning experience too. Is there any recourse with the supplier who made the unauthorised change, or does responsibility fall solely on LTT for not spotting it and refusing the backpacks at the outset? This feels like a situation where, if it weren't for being in different countries and not wanting to lose an otherwise preferred supplier, litigation could be the next step... But I suppose that wouldn't be practical.

    You guys touched it with the Xeon Scalable family but I feel like you missed a few things that make this even more hilarious. The Xeon Silver 4210 is a generation newer than the Xeon Silver 4110. The Xeon Silver 4310 also exists. Then you have your Xeon Gold 5000 and 6000 series. The first number does not dictate whether or not if the processor is the newest generation or not, which is what they are even calling out AMD for doing, where only the 2nd number of their product lineup says something about the generation, here it does too. And what the hell is the difference between Gold 5000 and 6000. I build servers with this as a job, and it isn't always very clear what is what, but let's call out AMD for doing EXACTLY WHAT WE DO.

    @19:40 - Windows never had a 9 because of Windows 95 and Windows 98. There is a bunch of software out there that compares windows versions by the first part of the name of the product. So "Windows 9" was used to check for the version of 95 and 98. Having a Windows 9 that wasn't 95 and 98 would break a lot of old software. The crazy thing is the amount of legacy software written in the early to late 90s and early 00s that check for this that is mission critical. We would have a kind of Y2K problem if they had a Windows 9.

    Have to say - this is Linus putting his money where his mouth is. I was one of those people who, while understanding his sentiment, did not appreciate an informal trust me bro guarantee. And this was the true test of that guarantee. This fix will cost Linus 6-7 figures and will probably eat into most of the profits of the first and second batch of the backpack run but it guarantees that the next time LTT sells an ultra expensive product people will truly trust them (as now there's precedent).
    Personal message for Linus: It's one thing to trust you as a content creator, you've had that trust for years. Today you earned my trust from as a consumer.

    • @adammiller9029

      If he didnt do it... he'd get sued... which would cost more.... and have to deal with charge backs, where he ends up eating a processing fee, delivery costs, and the cost of the product gets charged back... because banks really dont like it when you sell their customer something with misleading advertising. So this is actually the LESS expensive option for him, because attempting to remedy the issue on his own terms minimizes cost. Where as hundreds, if not thousands of people have charge back process would just be a bank saying "Fuck you, pay me." This is saving him money....

    • @TheCollateraldamage1
      @TheCollateraldamage1 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@adammiller9029 the backpack has been out for more than a year now and most banks limit chargebacks to within 30-60 days (max i've seen is 120 days). The vast majority of these aren't eligible for chargebacks. He wont get sued because he is already going beyond the warranty, which is to give a full refund no questions asked. He is going even further by also giving people the option to wear out the bottom and then email support to get a new backpack which could take years. This solution is so much better than just fulfilling the warranty so there's no way he's going to get sued because everyone can get their money back.

      Similarly to Noctua, who will provide free support for basically anything of theirs. I had to "build" 2 pcs for friends (not actually build, just put the parts list together. One ended up assembling it themselves with grest strife, the other hired a dude for 50€ and do it for them) and in both cases I pushed for a noctua cooler just because of support. If anything goes wrong, they will either have replacement parts or a refund with little to no hassle. If they want to change platform, they will get sendt the appropriate brackets for free. If I had gotten any other cooler, probably cheaper or better performing, support would have either been on me or non-existent. Offering a good after sale support will sell your products in many occasions.
      At the same time, in both cases I put a ABSOLUTELY NO ASUS policy both for GPUs (added Gigabyte there) and motherboards because of the problems and especially because of the handling of said problems for the last 3 years by them. Not just limited to DIY pc, too: except for the last gen where everything seems to have gone ok, every rog phone and zenfone had a great risk of getting bricked by software updates or falling apart due to poor build quality, with warranties being denied all around. Fuck Asus for at least another 2 to 3 years.

    SDR content _can_ be pushed brighter, but I think the main reason displays are usually kneecapped with SDR content is because HDR expanded color values also apply to the luminance values of each individual color, which were set when it was color graded and mastered, same with SDR content. So technically the SDR content isn't being viewed as intended if you just push the brightness. I'm just guessing but it's not hard to imagine that some pieces of content will look worse if you simply push the brightness as it could reveal hidden problems that shouldnt be visible if it's being viewed as intended.

    • @tannernalley9654
      @tannernalley9654 9 месяцев назад

      This is my thinking aswell. SDR content is specifically calibrated at 100 cd/m2 whereas HDR content is calibrated at a minimum of 400 cd/m2. I imagine the farther a monitor deviates from these values, the less technically color accurate the image will be.

    • @nickwallette6201
      @nickwallette6201 9 месяцев назад

      Wouldn't this only be a concern if you're trying to use a display that is calibrated, though? Because most of us are probably never going to see a display (at home, anyway) that is calibrated for the same dynamics in luminance or color as the reference displays used for color grading the source material.
      I see this as something like "vibrant mode" on displays now. If you want your grass neon green, well... go nuts. Far be it from anyone else to tell you what you like is wrong. Same, I think, should be said for luminance scaling.
      The only downside I can see is this: HDR is all about dynamics, not actual brightness. SDR's range has always been compressed to give you as much sense of brightness as possible, without making it impossibly dark to watch in normal viewing conditions. HDR relieves you of having to make that compromise, as you can just keep going up when it's called for, and you're not losing visual fidelity when you don't need all that light. Ergo, if you use HDR scaling on SDR content, you might end up with material that is overly contrasted, and/or going overly bright too often. But, as long as you have contrast and brightness controls (of whatever kind), you should be able to limit that to something appropriate and pleasant.
      Now if only we could get back the dynamic range of AUDIO....

    I also noticed that with last 2 or 3 drivers I have way more crashes with 7900XTX. What I have observed is that after most of them the integrated GPU in 7800X3D was showing an exclamation mark in device manager. Disabling it seems to reduce (or maybe even stop) the crashes. The latest driver, though definitely made things unstable with Hardware-Accelrated Graphics Scheduling, especially when resuming from sleep with Photoshop opened. Disabling it in Windows settings seems to fix this. I have shared whatever info I have through AMD's bug reporting tool after some of the crashes, so maybe they will be able to fix it at some point.

    Just two months ago, I bought a Lenovo ThinkStation with dual Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 procesors (with a total of 48 cores, 96 threads) including Windows 11 before "eventually" coming to realize that an 8160 is known as "products formerly Skylake" which means Intel 6th Generation processor technology on 14 nm die. Wtf?

      But, it's going to be ok. $40,000 unit new in 2017 was picked up for $1500 (256GB Ram, 16TB storage). And it's intended purpose is for a home lab.
