- Gen.Farrah Aidid(Farrax Caydiid) was a radical Somali leader who fought against United Nations, eventually pushing them back in 1995. He reportedly shot down two helicopters of the US Army in October 1993, which created tensions between him and then President Bill Clinton. Earlier in 1990, his rivalry with Ali Mahdi triggered a nationwide civil war which took the lives of 350,000 people. This interview taken in 1994 was at a very crucial point of time as he was killed in battle in July of 1996.

Although I wasn’t born in Somalia both my parents were and they escaped during the civil war in 1993 and thankfully found refuge here in America and found the opportunity they were looking for. Again I’m not familiar with the history of Somalia but from what I’ve heard and read on the internet both Siad Barre and Aidid made horrible mistakes that caused the death of over 350,000 Somalia people which is absolutely crazy. Although Siad Barre made more mistakes and caused this civil war by creating a dictatorship and Aidid basically rebelled against this which exploded into this huge civil war. Both men are at fault here simply because they were killing people based on what tribe they are from which is basically a genocide. I don’t understand why Somali people praise these men Aidid and Siad Barre when they caused the deaths of so many innocent people even kids and for that i fen never respect there actions but I kind of understand Aidids reasoning. Can someone explain to me why people praise this man and call him “Lion of Africa”?????

Aidid was also part of Siad Bare regime for almost 10 years combined. The only thing known with Aidid is civil war, and Siyad Bare was the best dictator among African leaders.

The late General Aidid, contrary to my earlier assumptions, had fair understanding in governance and politics. It also worth noting that he is speaking from Somali interest point of view which is missing now in most Somali politicians discourse. One of his failures was his inability to manage the crises that ensued after the fall of the dictatorship. To be charitable to him, it is hard to control people who were kept in open-to-air prison for 20 years.

He wanted a North-South Federal System after purging Daroods from Mogadishu. Hawiye and Isaaq duopoly on power. Totally different than the system we have now. Hell, SNM doesn't even want to be part of Somalia.

im watching this after seeing Black Hawk Down the movie. Its pretty out of it to be able to see the real guy they were after. SO it was a silly power struggle between 2 clans. The fact these 2 idiots use children to fight for their causes, ill never get over. This is why voting is the best most peaceful way to keep a system going and no leader should be in power in any country for longer than 2 terms. Regardless if people like the leader or not. They should still have to leave after 2 terms and they cant ever lead again. It keeps the system moving. I looked up resources in Somalia. its 2020 and teh research said resource wise, its pretty low in terms of strategic resources. Maybe the UN and US didnt want the violence spill into resource rich areas or something. Who knows.
