  • In this episode I make the X Axis mounting plate for the NEMA 34 Hybrid (closed loop) stepper motor.

    DIY CNC Milling machine build.
My objective for this project is to design and build a CNC milling machine without the need for any machining of the parts. Ordinarily, building a mill requires a much bigger mill to get the axis surfaces flat and parallel.
By using aluminum tool plate (which is in theory pre-machined flat) and bolting the critical components rather than welding, it should be possible to avoid any machine work. After all, I'm building a mill because I don't have one!
Linear rails and ball screws are the cheap Chinese 20mm style that you can find on eBay etc.

where did you find the couplers, i cant find 10x14mm coupler. 10mm for the ball screw and 14mm for the nema34,

    Hi dear @Seabass Engineering
Thanks for sharing your great project.
I want to know why do you choose closed loop stepper instead of a servo motor? what accuracy and speed do you expect from this motors?

Mainly due to cost. closed loop steppers are much cheaper. I have found that accuracy is so far very good.

So I've been seeing you use these hole transfer punches quite a few times now and for the life of me can't find a place that sells metric size variants of the bloody things. Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Can't the drill press tap holes as well?

Yes I was being lazy. It could do with a button for reverse wiring into the VFD too. I'm sure I'll get around to it some day

Do not use rotating machines with Your gloves on. Great machining!

You should get a CNC machine to help do all those parts.

This is possibly the most frustrating part about building a CNC - Knowing that if it was built already you could have made half the parts so much better and faster...
