When you said " a pommel strike" i've got war flashbacks of flying pommels, and the evil grin on the enemy's face, slowly unscrewing their pommel to join the fight...
Poleaxes are lovingly called the medieval can openers for their massive striking force. Looking forward to the absolute devastation of those helmets. Hopefully at least some of them survive the journey to the poleaxe
Can I just say that I love Skal's video titles? "Say, what was the name of that Skallagrim video where he showcased helmets that subscribers sent in for testing various weap- oh, here it is."
Skall, you should bring out the quarterstaff you showed off for all the people complaining about how your test didn't display as much power as you said it did. I think putting a nice big dent in one of these helmets would really showcase just what a quarterstaff was/is capable of.
You should add some modern helmets too, just for the heck of it. Id love to see pommelled construction or motorcycle helmet. It would be awesome fun and a great comparison.
There wasn't too much padding under those early styles of helmet. The bascinet has more padding and later helmets, but they still had to fit pretty tightly. They're all way too large.
Thank you very much for mentioning our Steel event over here in Japan.10:41 Steel heroes will be held on December 10 and 11th in Tokyo. Expecting fighters from several countries to come compete with with our fighters. Its going to be great! If you're going to be in Japan at that time, you've definitely got to come join in the fun. www.steel-heroes.jp/
When I you put on the first helmet you tried on I kind of expected you to shout something along the lines of "Skyrim belongs to the Nords!". I'm used to this type of content, but for someone lost in the depths of RUclips, watching a crazy grown up man wearing helmets might be somewhat weird. I love your channel!
sometimes alcohol makes me more empathetic in my youtube comments..but I gotta say; Dude your channel is one of the best niche channels on youtube. I don't watch every video, but every single one that i tune in on..I'm never disappointed, I find it hard to understand how someone can stay true to their own interests and at the same time go into depth, into an almost bullet point presentation style of every point their audience wants to know the "devil in the details of" ...as I was saying, I find it hard to understand that level of "getting" your audience, but damnit, I thank you for it. Cheers
Interesting stuff, In my daily battles with concrete. Protection and the armor of my discipline, polymer, is important. Injuries are common and very painful. Sometimes I'll go full with wrist guards, elbow, knee and helmet when taking on new battles, i.e. Tricks and transitions in my skating world. At other times I just go with my helmet and knee pads. As a skater I feel a modern day warrior in my path.
I've had my eye on that Sword of Feanor since you showed it, recently went to a site I used to buy from and found that they were passing off a completely different sword as that model. A good lesson to cross-reference whenever you're looking at buying a particular sword. Also, as far as swords themselves go, I'd say stay clear of Medieval Collectibles. Armor, clothes and accessories, I couldn't say; they seem okay in that regard.
+Skallagrim you are so awesome skall. I've been watching your channel for two and a half years and you helped me through a breakup and your videos were always there for me. You are such a great person and you're very intelligent. Keep it up. Thank you so much!
Not sure if anyone has suggested it, but I am pretty sure the helmets are often oversized because of the use of additional padding for fighting groups that try to emulate medieval combat with higher degrees of safety. I know that many SCA groups use foam padding all around the skullcap and cheekplates to reduce the risk of concussion and impact forces causing other damages.
Pfft, pommel strike. The best way to combat any opponent in any armour is to end them rightly. You stand there, you unscrew that pommel, and you toss it at them. That'll work for sure!
Two suggestions: 1. For visual effect, maybe wear some armour yourself during the test, including! gauntlets. 2. For oversized helmets, consider the light system of in-helmet cross straps used in modern helmets to keep the head cool and reduce the chance of dents/partial penetrations actually affecting the skull.
love that helmet testing series :) you might wanna consider separating the footage into 4 videos for each helmet so you can talk in detail about every impact with every weapon
Suggestion: When testing, before you strike, you should swing the weapon(every weapon) so simulate a short battle with 1 opponent and then come in to strike helmets or armor. This will make it way more realistic because a dagger doesn't tire your hand whereas a heavy weapon's swings become exponentially weaker as you are using them. This way you are really testing the combat effectiveness of the weapon AND the armor because you are rarely going to just come in, prepare, take aim and swing at your opponent. Looking forward to the tests :)
That really large one is so big because it's for sport combat/rattan, it's meant to have like an inch plus of foam on either side of the interior to protect you from getting concussed.
You should put a decibel meter in the enclosed helmets. "Will the Knightly zombie be deaf after the first hit?". There's also stickers that are used to measure impact you could use. Also that great helmet is about the correct size but it is missing the leather suspension. You would wear your arming cap for the cushion to absorb the blow, then on top of that you would have a basinet with the chainmail coif. Then you put on the great helmet and it would float on the suspension. The great helm absorb the majority of the blow as it moves to contact the basinet which in turn absorbs more of the blow as it compresses the arming cap padding.
The semi leather one, i heard something like that was found in Scotland once. but the reinforcing ribs are commonly thicker than the plates so it could be that the plates simply didn't survive but having (hardened) leather panels dos not sound silly to me. Iron was sometimes hard to get so wearing the cage only was also done (by the Catalan at Halmyros 1311)
I paused the video at 10:41 and thought to myself "My god that is a beautiful looking blade. The details on the guard and the indents on the blade NEAR the guard have to be the best looking parts of it."
Hey Skall, wouldn't the huge size of the helmets affect the results of the test? I imagine if the helmet wobbles like the Notre Damme Bells on the head, you wouldn't get very objective results.
Really looking forward to your review on the Darksword Armory piece. They make some fairly attractive swords at price points that are generally about 1/2 of Albion, and I'd like to know how they stack up as far as fit, finish, and craftsmanship are concerned.
I know a lot of helmets are oversized in SCA use, for instance, since we would line them with heavy foam padding inside, to go with our other padding, since we tended to be more cognizant of concussions, etc, than they likely were in 900 CE.
well the norman helmet is epic armoury and is made for Larping. The one with the chainmail is a replica of the coppergate helmet, and looks quite accurate, if a little large.
I would assume the helmets are oversized to allow them to be dented without immediate damage to the head. The tighter they fit, the more dangerous a deformation of the helmet would be. The air gap functions as a safety zone.
Lindybeige did a video on padding with helmets, sadly he never finished his helmet padding I think. He had an interesting observation that too much padding made everything wobbly as well.
Most knights wear padded coif and fill up their helmets with straw or other packing materials to create good fit and extra cushion . Indian Turban double as sort of helmet which is interesting ...
Skall the Visored bascinet helmet should be worn with a smaller spangenhelm under it or basically the leather one, those were basically great helm variants ment to be tossed in melee but kept on in cavalry charges, thats why they're big could be wrong
As far as the nasal helmet is concerned, the size is not that surprizing since it is probably designed to be worn above a camail (mail hood). The same can probably be said about some of your other helmets. I've got a big head and I found it very difficult to find a large enough helmet to accomodate both my arming cap and the mail. To my knowledge the nasal helmet is indeed based on an archeological find, the helmet of Saint Wenceslas.
Hey Skall! You must do a control test and cut one of those zombie heads without a helmet on it. I personally would prefer to see how you end one of those rightly with your kriegsmesser or a danish axe, that gonna be pretty spectacular.
hi skallagrim, I love your videos and i wanted to ask you something. I'm currently a 15yr old junior blacksmith and i want to go into making armour, starting with my own custom built helmet that has to have a balance of practicality and good looks. I wondered if you have any recommendations of helmet designs/types/styles that you can recommend me. even if you don't see this comment thanks for the amazing videos. -ps, I have glasses so the helmet can be a style that requires a tight fitting to the face
I'm no armor expert, but i think you could do a one piece Sallet without a folding visor. The Sallet isn't tight fitting in the face and doesn't use much metal, so i think it would be easier than most helmets to make.
I recommend that you check out the videos by Ian LaSpina, aka Knyght Errant, he has a whole series of videos where he reviews several different Medieval helmets ranging all the way from a simple kettle helm all the way up to the armet. They're very informative and might give you an idea of what kind of helmet you might want to try to make. My personal favorite is the sallet with bevor, a relatively simple design that looks good, ok visibility, and decent protection.
If you're not into stylish helmets and want the easiest possible helmet to make, you can make a kettle helmet. Kettle helmets can be made from a single piece or from different pieces rivotted together.
I'd think the large size is because most modern medieval combats require thicker than historical arming caps for protection issues. The most notorious is the bascinet, specially since the visor strap tells me it's oriented to bohurt combats (the strap is requred at tournamente like Battle of the Nations, even though it's not an historical piece; you mentioned irhglty that a knight would want to be able to lift it for more visibility and breathing at will). But hey, it's nice when you do have a large head like mine xD I've got a L sized spangenhelm from battle merchant, and fits me snuggly once I get my arming cap (not unlike the one you show here) and the maille coif.
Hey Skall, I'm fairly sure that "heavy" helmet is a reproduction of the Coppergate helmet from York England, and the all metal nasal helmet is a reproduction of the wenceslas helmet from Prague. I'm fairly familiar with those helmets from reenacting that time period. Funnily enough, I used to fight with an 18ga helmet and It didn't crease as easily as my 14ga one that i use now.
I know this is an old video at this point, but about the helmet sizes; you are meant to wear padding underneath them. For example, although the 3rd helmet seems to have some padding on the inside, the mail aventail practically requires padding underneath it to be of any use. Stick your head into a kettle, and whack it. Should give you a nice idea of why the helmets are oversized, and why you need padding :)
Will you test a Motorecycle helmet? Would love to see how modern helmets do in that test :) And i don't think they are oversized. You had a big amount of patting under that stuff.
Lol at the people explaining to Skal that helmets are used with padding underneath, as if he didn't know. That's like Armour 101, folks. Also, watch the damn video?
Yep. :) Of course you use padding underneath, but when the helmets already have suspended liners you don't normally need a massive marshmallow underneath. And some of these are large even with the padded arming cap.
I think the reason why those helmets feels too big is that you shouldn't directly put it on your head, you have to put something between your head and the helmet, such as wrap your head up with a thick kerchief, in order to to protect your head from the shock of the strike.
What would interest me MOST are early-renaissance munitions-grade armor and maximilian armor :D Though I realise that this would cost...quite a lot. (Munitions grade armor not so much, though it's rather niche I'd think)
Nice vid Skall cannot wait for the testing, Oh it would be nice if you mentioned millimeter in your discussion of your thicknesses's IE. 18 gauge is about 1.25mm 14 gauge is about 2.05 mm.
Imma guess at the types of helmets shown: 1. Nasal helm 2. Spangenhelm 3. Late Roman Ridge 4. Not too sure on this one, I'm guessing... enclosed helm? 5. Bascinet with a flat visor
+Skallagrim perhaps best helmets are oversize for a reason? that you should perhaps put something between your head and helmet that would consume the impact momentum?

Perhaps some of the helmet tests can be done with bicycle calvalry.
skall riding a bicycle with a lance under his arm, what a sight it would be😆

Maybe you're meant to dual wield the helmets?
????
?????????
how do you dual wield helmets ?!
Wearing a small helmet inside the big helmet :v
Obviously by wearing one on either fist in place of gauntlets and then flailing about in a wild attempt to bludgeon your enemy
None of those helmets protect the glorious beard!
The beard IS protection.
Skallagrim its not when a flying pommel hits you in the chin

Indeed
Same!
On helmet oversized topic. Wouldnt you wear a padded coif under the helmet? And even chain mail coif under some(greathelm and biscnet )?
You would. But I think most of them had padding which means it is not needed to put a padded hat over and it still seems like they are big.
I thought that to but he said even with an arming cap they are over sized
6:34
You could probably fit a smaller bascinet under the largest helmet he showed
There wasn't too much padding under those early styles of helmet. The bascinet has more padding and later helmets, but they still had to fit pretty tightly. They're all way too large.

Can you pad the shit out of the zombie head? Like, wrap padding around it over and over untill it's large enough?
Or use bubble wrap
Lol jk
+Stephanie Yu why? just for test it would be good

Nadeem Halasah
Glad to know. Thanks for the positive feedback. :)
You shall do as i say or i shall throw my pommel at thy!
These are really cool. My grandfather made me a few steel helmets, they're not completely historically either.
Not sure if anyone has suggested it, but I am pretty sure the helmets are often oversized because of the use of additional padding for fighting groups that try to emulate medieval combat with higher degrees of safety. I'm jealous. Breaking things is fun. Setup, cleanup may not be...but during the process, you're going to have a blast.
+Skallagrim You are supposed to have a Coif under your helmet, that is why they are so much larger.
Two suggestions:
1. For visual effect, maybe wear some armour yourself during the test, including! gauntlets.
2. For oversized helmets, consider the light system of in-helmet cross straps used in modern helmets to keep the head cool and reduce the chance of dents/partial penetrations actually affecting the skull.

bloody pommel strikes, why do we even bother with the blades
dont have to get to close

@@richardlionerheart1945 no. Just sword with hilt and everything but the blade is forming into the pommel 🤔👌
