what i wouldn't give to have this guy as a mentor and instructor. He taught me how to groove, how to play to paradiddles, double paradiddles, and how to do the drumroll without ever saying a word directly to me. All I had to do was find a video of him instructing on how to do it. This guy is my hero.
The theoretical knowledge adds to the performance. Articulate , intelligent superstar with charisma and strong work rate. Possibly the best ever rock drummer with J Bonham a close runner up IMO for the incredible intro and finale to Rock n Roll.
Exceptional drummer and musician. As a early teenager I saw and heard him at Göta Lejon in Stockholm ca -80 (?) with Whitesnake. They rocked and rolled the paint off of that movietheatre’s walls. And Ian Paice drummed the merrow out of your bones, still in a very very brilliant way. One of my all time favourite concerts.
I remember seeing this rock school clip on pbs as a kid and i used the paradiddle trick from that day forward. I am with all the commentators who say Ian Paice doesn't get enough props. He is one of thee best. this was great to see again.
oh my goodness! i haven't thought of that show in decades! it came to mind when i saw his head start to rock as he started soloing. i didn't even remember the name of the show. memories.
I saw this when I was eleven on PBS. I am not even a drummer but I learned how to do a paradidle from this video. Still do it from time to time to stay sharp. Never know when it might save your life. Ian is a monster drummer. Deep Purple is an incredible band..
Look I know this is a dumb ten year old comment, but I think you set the precedent for top comments that literally quote something in the video with an emoji. I’m sorry, but screw you.
The way he's explaining shows that he is very good at analyzing his drum set. This is one of the many attributes which makes him one of the best Drummers !!
Drummers like Ian inspired me to give up drumming, because I thought to myself I would never be good enough. Thoughts like that are always self fulfilling.
This guy is flippn amazing! how come Iv not heard much of him! Maybe it was the fame of smoke on the water as a legend song that overshadowed him! but dude, what feel and technicality he has, one of the high end greatest of all time. I guess it was these late 60s drummers who really understood where to take jazz to the next level.
This is the best advice for any aspiring drummer. I think most drummers start off trying to cram all their chops in before maturing to a less is more philosophy which I learned from an interview listening to Cozy Powell
"Once you've blown your cookies, you've got no more left to give." on a PBS show. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 When I watched (and memorized) this show as a CHILD, I didn't get that line at all. At age 49, I just fell over in my chair. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’ve seen other videos of him and for a self taught rock drummer, he actually explains things well and actually knows what his playing where as others may not know what there technical doing sometimes.
Y'know, with a little bit of work, this guy could be a great drummer. He should think of, maybe, joining a band some time! LMAO! Ian's always been a great source of inspiration for a great many drummers. Always creative, always something interesting and a bit different. And, of course, the 'drive' behind the legendary Deep Purple.
Without Ian Paice, there'd be no Clive Burr, no Lars Ulrich, and no Virgil Donati, who once said that he was 'blown away by Ian's clarity and power.' Considering the source, that is not a small complement.
At :40, check out Rembrandt's 17th century painting 'The Night Watch' and you'll see this guy with the big drum on his leg like Ian says. I mean Ringo brought drumming into the modern age with his matched grip, and now it seems like when i look around we're going backwards with 'traditional' left hand grip showing up more and more. Think it over.
I know I'm going to be attacked, but I'm free to voice my opinion. Previous to recent years, Bonham was considered a good drummer, but not the king, the greatest drummer around. He was a heavy, hard grooving drummer. He played a killer shuffle, but that's about all that impressed me. It seems there is consensus on RUclips that Bonham is the standard by which every drummer should be measured. I've seen Bonham, Moon, Buddy Rich, Danny Seraphine, Charlie Watts, Phil Collins, Alan White, Ian Paice and many, many more live. Back in the day when they had "festival" seating at concerts and you could get right up to the stage. Bonham never did anything that made me want to go home and try to learn it. I've never had the pleasure to see Bill Bruford, but he has always been one of the top for me. After watching Buddy Rich, maybe 15 feet from his kit, I went home and devoted all of my spare time to practicing rudiments and changed to the traditional grip from a matched grip. Do I think Buddy is the best? Hard to say. Each has something that give's me a desire to improve. Even Bonham's shuffle!
@jetfreak4 That makes two of us (and I'm sure many, many more). Paice showed me that you can set up a drum kit for a left-handed player, and all the things you cited in your comment. He's been my hero since I was about 13 years old.
00:45 Buddy Rich would disagree. He thought the traditional grip was the only way to go on the drumset. He called it the "drum way". You can get around the kit faster and he was probably right.
Speaking as someone learning drums (Vdrums), I've never understood why drum sticks don't have some kind of grip to help me stop flinging one across the room!
For me vic firth sticks are very grippy, even if I'm sweating a lot. But many stick manufacturers have "plastic dip" sticks. When I was a beginner I thought I need those but i didn't. I never met a drummer who uses them live...
Now, watch the king play paradiddles in the extreme on the drum set. Fast forward to two minutes thirty nine into this video: ruclips.net/video/9bM98GlHJvA/видео.html
Hyde on drums, eh? I would have imagined Kelso.. I figured Foreman on vocals, Hyde on guitar, Fez on bass, and Kelso drumming.... Regardless, No one plays like Ian.. One of the greats of all time.
Paicey never gets the recognition he deserves for being the exceptional drummer he is and was. Absolute legend ...
Rikitocker I’ve always loved deep purple but I really only recently realised how great an educator IP actually is
Edward gbone Ian is in his own league.
Incorrect, as the (extremely accomplished) drummer for a very famous band he gets a lot of recognition
@@jeffsimon9594 ... 132 people disagree
@@thevelointhevale1132 Some folks will always disagree. What I said is a fact, he has been a world-renowned rock drummer for decades.
I think I have an Ian Paice addiction. I can listen to him drumming til the cows come home haha!
One hell of a drummer!
He's been my favourite drummer since 1971
what i wouldn't give to have this guy as a mentor and instructor. He taught me how to groove, how to play to paradiddles, double paradiddles, and how to do the drumroll without ever saying a word directly to me. Ian Paice will always be my favorite drummer. Since 1974 when I first heard him he has been my hero.
Jazz influence, so much swing to his playing
The theoretical knowledge adds to the performance. Articulate , intelligent superstar with charisma and strong work rate. Possibly the best ever rock drummer with J Bonham a close runner up IMO for the incredible intro and finale to Rock n Roll.
I fuckin loved those , what twenty seconds, he gave us, pure quality.
Exceptional drummer and musician. As a early teenager I saw and heard him at Göta Lejon in Stockholm ca -80 (?) with Whitesnake. They rocked and rolled the paint off of that movietheatre’s walls. Learn your paradiddles, flams and so forth! Great drummer, One of The World's Greatest Living Drummers!
It's always a pleasure hearing and seeing Ian's clips. He's a solid Rock drummer and also, he appears to be a cool guy.
I remember seeing this rock school clip on pbs as a kid and i used the paradiddle trick from that day forward. I am with all the commentators who say Ian Paice doesn't get enough props. He is one of thee best. this was great to see again.
+Stephen Christensen 100% correct! Ian is THE man...
Thanks God he's still alive
Legendary musician! Fancied the arse off him in my teens. And beyond ...
This video was the first time I ever heard somebody turn a Paradiddle into a beat. When this was on "RockSchool" many years ago I was floored!
oh my goodness! i haven't thought of that show in decades! it came to mind when i saw his head start to rock as he started soloing. i didn't even remember the name of the show. memories.
RockSchool was the first online music lessons even before there was an "online." Lol
I saw this when I was eleven on PBS. I am not even a drummer but I learned how to do a paradidle from this video. Still do it from time to time to stay sharp. Never know when it might save your life. Ian is a monster drummer. Deep Purple is an incredible band..
"I'm not too fussy about drumsticks... as long as they're 16 inches long, 9/16ths in diameter. And the right weight". Brilliant drummer, though.
Look I know this is a dumb ten year old comment, but I think you set the precedent for top comments that literally quote something in the video with an emoji. I’m sorry, but screw you.
Ian Paice.... the best drummer ever!
The drumming on Machine Head... it's by far the best sound of any early 70's drum sound and Paice snare technique is way ahead.
Best drummer ever
Loved him since I heard Hush in 1968 and appreciate his drumming even more today. A great man and his humbleness keeps him from getting stale.
2:40-3:20 is Some of My Favorite Drumming, Ever!!! 😊
Ian Paice: Drummer, Extraordinaire!
Most impressive drummer I’ve ever heard
Loved Paice's natural finish Pearl kit.A beauty.Used it through the 'Perfect Strangers' tour.
Old school rock drummer par excellence. Smart. Knows what to play and when to play it. Has a great sound. Excellent.
I loves me some Ian Paice.
The way he's explaining shows that he is very good at analyzing his drum set. This is one of the many attributes which makes him one of the best Drummers !!
Paice looked like as he played. Cool and smooth.
I was as blown away that Sunday in the mid 80s (watching Rock School) as I am now, the man is a genius
Just fucking amazing.
IAN PAICE!!!!! Nothing else needs to be said!!!
When I heard 'made in Japan' I too wanted to play like Mr. Paice, unfortunately I didn't come close!
Drummers like Ian inspired me to give up drumming, because I thought to myself I would never be good enough. Thoughts like that are always self fulfilling.

look at Paice's happy face!!!!!!!!!obviously, this is the first time that he had a chance to talk about the drums and he make 100% use of that.
This is the best advice for any aspiring drummer. I think most drummers start off trying to cram all their chops in before maturing to a less is more philosophy which I learned from an interview listening to Cozy Powell
One of the worlds best easily! i went to one of his Drum Clinics in London once and he was incredible and a really nice guy too!
"Once you've blown your cookies, you've got no more left to give." on a PBS show. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Che mito. Lo adoro❤❤❤❤❤
from the programme rock school on british tv that I remember very well
I’ve seen other videos of him and for a self taught rock drummer, he actually explains things well and actually knows what his playing where as others may not know what there technical doing sometimes.
Man, if I could just fiddle around like THAT!
What a legend!

+Nunya Bizness Besides musical aspects, I adore Ian's sense of understatement.
Nunya Bizness He is great Deep Purple was/is a great band. Can't think of any guitarist that doesn't want to play "Smoke on the Water"

My favorite drummer
Makes it look so easy
A great drummer who Incorporated jazz with rock.
What is the point of compare Paice to Bonham? Both are incredible drummers. Just enjoy!
A man of wisdom
Right, Bonham and Paice are my favorites.
I think paice has better techniques but bonham has better groove and feel
Nice one. Haven't seen this clip for years I think it was part of a BBC programme called Rock School. Thanks for sharing. Take it easy.
The best drummer!!!!
So smooth...
Best drummer

Dunno about previous posts on this, but to me his fiddling around would be my zenith!
The King!!
This is great advice
This was from the British TV show 'Rock School'.
He's an amazing drummer and a fellow LEFTY!!! If not for one of my heroes (Chad Smith) I'd never give him the time. (SO GLAD I DID.)
I always loved this little clip...I remember when I first saw it on "RockSchool" back in the day. That was kinda "RUclips" before there was "RUclips"
And so i go fiddling around of something you can't play... Like this
Paice is a southpaw! Awesome!
"I'm not very picky about my sticks" then starts saying exact length and measurments.
They should give him a pair of GOLD drums sticks , great guy, miss Deep Purple a lot.
Rock School! Classic.
Master !!

astonishing...

Yes, exactly.

groovy glasses and sideburns-there was a show called rock school on pbs (probably a bbc show originally)-I wonder if this was from that....
After Bonham hands down best rock drummer ever. A living monument
mark s hes as good as bonham. Both very good. Watch the mule solo....
00:45 Buddy Rich would disagree. He thought the traditional grip was the only way to go on the drumset. He called it the "drum way". You can get around the kit faster and he was probably right.
It's very simple.
A benefit to using traditional is that you'll stick out (no pun intended) from the stereotype of modern day drummers
Does anyone know where this comes from and If I can find the full thing?
this was from a bbc programme from the 80's called 'rockschool'....
Hyde is a great drummer honestly
No. The grip that feels best to you is best for whatever music you want to play.
This looks like about 1984. Does anybody know the year?

There are a few manufacturers who make special tape for extra grip, and you can also buy drum gloves.
Rockschool
Where is this video from? DVD?

forgiving me for correcting you Ian, but 4/4 is a time signature and not a tempo.
I think i just became a match grip drummer...

I don't think he used the gong in his life, but there it is :)
Hard loving Man from
"In Rock" !!!
I think they made Hyde on That 70's Show look like him👍🏻
Nice whig
Shame he never got to see Sina on Drums.
Steven Hyde ????????
Paice is a southpaw! Awesome!
