  • With modern gasoline engines becoming smarter and more efficient than ever, choosing the right fuel for the job has probably never been so important. Of course, today’s driver is presented with no shortage of options when it comes to fuel grades and pour-in-tank enhancers - but should you use them in your car?

I thought the whole point of Octane Booster was to increase the octane rating of lower octane fuels. Let's say you buy 15 gallons of 87, the octane booster is supposed to boost it to something higher.

That is the point, i keep a bottle of booster in my challenger because it needs at least 91 but i see a lot of country stores in my area that only sell 87 so if im ever forced to fuel there i can get it to 92

Here’s a good example of when you should use Octane Booster. In my experience, I purchased a 2013 G37 from Carmax. It’s in decent shape the maintenance was kept up on it. Upon test driving it, I noticed it had a hell of a spark knock / Ping when heavily accelerating. This is Because carmax cannot be bothered to Top off the tank with what the car is designed to combust on. I poured a bottle of Lucas Octane booster into the tank and topped it off with 93 pump gas. Once all the 87 was pumped out of the lines and the treated fuel started to reach the motor, I noticed the pinging / knocking had completely disappeared and the engine ran waaay better. Just my 10 cents. I would not purchase octane booster every time I fueled up unless I was in an area that the highest Octane level was below what the Owners manual specified, in which case I would, and top off with the highest available octane fuel.

Strange. I had an '04 IS300 that ran fine on 87 or 93. Of course I'd put 93 in it as the manual stated but my family would sometimes borrow the car and fill it with 87 out of habit. Never had any knocking or pinging.
'08 350z had a couple fill ups with 87 on accident but also never ran into any issues. Practically the same engine as your G37. I believe Z's are factory tuned on the richer side at higher RPMs but I'm not sure about G's so maybe that's the difference?

FINALLY! A well informed video on the octane boosters and ethanol. Great job. My Supercharged Mustang is tuned for 91 octane. The tune on the new Mustangs allows it to add up to 6 degrees more timing if the octane is good and adjusts for good OR bad octane via OAR (octane adjustment ratio). When I add octane booster, I get extra timing aka more power. 💥

I have a question wondering if you can answer. I have a 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD pro eight requires 91 octane or higher. This is not a problem when I’m in the city has most gas pumps will offer you a choice of four octane levels 87 89 91 and 94, however when I drive out into the more rural areas I come across small little towns where they may only offer you a choice of two which will be 87 and 89 which means the octane level is too low for my truck not very good for my engine timing. However if I was to add an octane booster with this increase the fuel to run as if I put 91 octane in. Would love to know if this would help with the issue when I’m in areas where I can’t get the high-octane gas if so I could always carry a few bottles with me and put them in as needed.

I wouldn't use any of these boosters in a can that use organometallic compounds like MMT; I'd be afraid of the Manganese deposits in my combustion chamber and exhaust system. In my 370Z I use a blend (1:3) of Sunoco SS100 race gas with Shell V-Power Nitro 91 oct to get a blended average of 94 octane, which the engine likes. The higher cost of the Sunoco race gas is largely offset by the increase in gas mileage that I get, about 2 to 3 mpg.

I am interested to save money as I have a old car that needs high octane. I want to use cheap gas and put in booster in to get it up to the octane it needs. Its cheaper than filling up with pure premium. Also in the video they mentioned kerosene as a big ingredient in the octane boosters so I was thinking maybe Marvels Mystery oil might help instead of the octane booster.

Higher octane gasoline is mostly beneficial for vtec or vvti engines where in the cam and ignition timing changes depending on throttle and load of the vehice. My MG5 1.5L has a dvvti and i can see the difference of torque during hard acceleration. But top speed is still the same tho 210kmh and from 4 business days now i can reach it on 3 business days. For mileage it realy does increas. When i use 91 octane i get 15km/L to 18km/L and in 100 octane petrol blaze 17km/L to 20km/L and yes the AC is on here.
Would i recommend higher octane? Yes(if your engine needs it)
Do you need it daily? No(just use it when you go on a long drive or have gased up lower octane fuel
Is it economical? NO, the mileage increase cannot compensate for the increased price of fuels this days.

Actual tests showed that one bottle in 15 gallons generally adds about 1/2 point to the octane.... Like 87 to 87.5....

Gumout octane booster is really weak stuff. You would need 2 bottles just to increase the octane rating by 1 number. It's cheap for a reason. If you need to boost your numbers by 3 points or more, use some canned racing fuel, like Boostane.

Is a 4stroke octane booster safe in a performance car engine running catless exhaust ?

    • @ragnarokbladeworks
      @ragnarokbladeworks 11 месяцев назад +1

For the record, the exhaust has no bearing on the combustion cycle of the engine, thus no bearing on whether or not the booster is okay for your engine. On that note though, this is really only beneficial if you have a turbo car and a tank full of crap fuel that's making it knock/ping/whatever. This will "ease the problem" of the crap fuel till you can put good fuel in. Safe in moderation, and not to be used every fuel up. Unless your local fuel source REALLY SUCKS.

A lot of recent performance cars require 93 octane to achieve full performance. Here in California, 91 octane is the premium and highest octane offered by the overwhelming majority of gas stations. There is one station in my neighborhood that offers 100 octane sunoco that you can mix with 91 to achieve 93 or whatever you're after. But, they are out of 100 until later this year. Until then, my only option is to use store bought octane booster. Sorry, folks. I'll be putting MMT into the air. I'd rather do that than damage the engine in my brand new Nissan Z with harmful engine knock. Blame California for its lack of 93 octane. Most states have 93.
