Edit: Yes extend the grade rod section or sections all the way till each section that you use locks like you said(that's how it works) then slide the receiver up or down the pole to set the grade....do not attempt to slide the grade rod sections they are to stay locked in place. ...by sliding the receiver up or down the pole you can determine how far you are off your base level by using the measurements on the grade rod.
10-4, understand that. The excavators I've used them with, mostly have used the fixed method Like I did, only because I didn't feel like having to remember the initial HI number, then do math a dozen times for each spot, when it was only a rough measurement. If I need to be exact, I can and will use that method. Thanks.
Just found your site recently and will follow. One thing you might want to do is set up the laser at near night when it is dark enough to see the laser at a distance and still see your edges of the pond and set up the laser at the height you want the water level to finally reach and see what the laser outlines along the shore and walk it to see if you have any problem areas.
That would be interesting, but in theory the day time laser should do the same! But I know what you're saying, it would be cool to actually see the level better with a laser. thanks.
Kapper I love the way you put instructions on case. The little zip lock back is a fantastic idea for my odd drill bits for drill that I buy that don't fit in the cases.
Those “machine screws” go in an electrical panel cover. So if your panel covers are missing screws that’s where your electrician lost them. LOL. We look for them screws all the time.
And this is why you buy from an authorized equipment store with sales people that know how to use the equipment, not a home improvement big box store or on-line.
Maybe I missed it but wouldn't it had been easier to get a reading from a red flags (preferred height) base then one from the existing water level? Is it 32" to reach your preferred water level (red flag base)? I'm guessing at two inches a day it will take 11 days to reach your "full" level? ;-)
Kapper got the same laser fully extend measure stick.. set the receiver on the stick till it beeps. lock the receiver down Now go out to where you want to get a measurement either raise stick up or lean the stick down to find the Beep.... now if you want to know the height difference remember where base setting was loosing up the receiver slide up or down till you get your beep that will give you a measurement Hope you follow The laser level is a electronic level it can not auto set elevation it is a straight lie measurement you can measure elevation change however it was not built for that The laser level is great for grading when you maintain a set elevation a must for pond dams spillways culvert install
yes, understand thanks. I much preferred to just lock in the base height (high water mark) and do the rough checks, rather than have to A) remember the first number a half dozen times and the B). Keep working the receiver up/down and do math each time. Just for a rough measure like this I prefer to lock in the Base height. Learned that from excavators, so not something I just made up :). Thanks.
When you are setting elevations on the rod. Say you setup the laser and receiver ( zeroed out) on an existing area and you need to lower the grade by two feet you you would have to move the receiver up the rod two feet to set to the lower desired grade. I have some Journeymen Carpenters now and again that just cannot grasp surveying.
I'd much prefer to not have to constantly move the receiver up/down and keep doing math. For some jobs that is necessary, but for a job that you are using a constant depth/level, I'd much rather lock the stick at the height necessary... but I'll try it both ways anyway..
Been thinking again Joe (Dangerous for sure). Have you approached Whitetail properties regarding them using 211 as a training/demonstration location to teach land management techniques to their customers that are buying land through them? By offering a hands on seminar every few weeks, they keep their customers involved, it can be something that can make them standout, AND you get free labor. Just saying.... Heck they could have a class on field cleanup, tree planting, food plotting and plant selection, hinge cutting, road/trail building, trail cam use etc. Lots of possibilities. If not them, maybe Curtis. Certainly could be used to show how different techniques can benefit the client's lands.
Believe me if we get some normal heavy rains that thing will be full into rain events. It can be called either a pond or a lake depending on what expert definition you look at :-)
Maryland is a mess up state aways I love it a small town called Linkwood Maryland pond called Higgins Mill Pond, it's about a mile wall and about two or three hundred yards wide, but I do like your Lake anyway I can see you have a very nice Property
You're supposed to move the receiver up and down, not the pole Kap! lol If you look at the receiver bracket it should have a point where you read the measurement on the pole, so If you want to add 6 inches you can move the receiver down the pole 6 inches to give you you elevation change. If you were doing a graded slope you would keep moving the receiver down or up by the same measurement as you moved the pole forward by a set distance each time. Good to see your dock is in the righ place as I was a little worried it was going to be too high out the water! Guess that “Kap eye level” isn't bad after all!
LOL, if I move the receiver than I'd have to write down the number (laser level) and do math!!!! I think the dock is still too high, so I'll probably drop it another foot or so...
Way cheaper than rip rap...60 pound bags of concrete. Go to your local home store and ask for the hard bags that nobody else will buy. I bought 10 bags at lowes the other day for a quarter a bag....25 cents. Just lay them down, when they harden up just burn off the paper.
yes, I understand that, but preferred not to have to remember the first number, then do math every time. This was just a rough check.. there's more than one way to .... well you know the rest.. :)

The receiver slides up and down the poles locks together
Looking good kapper buddy you can really see the end look to the project. Gonna be beautiful there. Good job Joe.
thanks man, Yeah, hard to believe the ending is near! (and beginning of new life on the lake! :)
Those “machine screws” go in an electrical panel cover. So if your panel covers are missing screws that’s where your electrician lost them. LOL. We look for them screws all the time.
Nice laser level, looks like it will take a measurement from a good distance away. Trying out the beach with some air swimming lol.
Does the receiver slide on the pole?
Awesome update keepin' it real man
10-4 thanks man.

Excellent info brother man ..

Just remember that; up is down and down is up on the storey pole receiver. It'll save you a ton of time on your projects.
not sure what you are saying.... ?

Really good job on this!
*Very handy*
Just used it yesterday for the first time in awhile! Laid out a nice pond with it!
Very interesting and I enjoyed watching. Like from me. 👍
Oh yeah the video I’ve been waiting on! And I can’t get it to load. LOL
With the lakes connected now u think fish are in the new pond??? Kapper outdoors???
Boy, not sure... We tossed a few in there this summer so there were already a few in there, but cross overs, just don't know yet..
Just lock the grade Pole and slide receiver up and down until you find your grade and tighten it down.
YEP
KAPP YOU SHOULD PUT THOSE JAM SCREWS ON THE BACK SIDE SO THE ENDS OF THEM DONT WEAR ON THE NUMBERS OF THE SHAFT...
I'd much prefer to not have to constantly move the receiver up/down and keep doing math. For some jobs that is necessary, but for a job that you are using a constant depth/level, I'd much rather lock the stick at the height necessary... but I'll try it both ways anyway..
Going to miss the “Kapper eye level” but I bet your work is more accurate now
Classic.
-> 🛎👍🏼
Whoa, wait a minute Kap.... New pond? You talking 211 or the home place? Also, will the home projects take a back seat now that 211 is a go?
211 has a pond that lays out perfect to expand it and double its size... Not sure how the priorities will pan out...
You should find some seeds for aquatic plants and spread some through the pond to give fish more places to hide
I have recently ordered several different types of seed! Wild rice and duck weed. We'll see what happens..
Kapper Outdoors nice

lol that would be sweet :)
what are you expecting tsunami or typhoon to fill that lake, lol just messing here in Maryland we call that a pond but Maryland is messed anyways
Believe me if we get some normal heavy rains that thing will be full into rain events. It can be called either a pond or a lake depending on what expert definition you look at :-)

That's a good deal for the hardened ones!
i still have no idea how you're figuring out (future) water level using your new toy. How does one use the damn thing? lol
lol, I'm sure not a pro, but have used them a few times helping out excavators... You might have to watch a few more vids on that! lol
Got it.
What a sin man i feel for ya man kinda funny but you pull the pole out till it clicks then you adjust the receiver
yes, I understand that, but preferred not to have to remember the first number, then do math every time. This was just a rough check.. there's more than one way to .... well you know the rest.. :)
Laser level ...... Tool of the Devil! ROFL!
First
💩😂
You better practice your backstroke cuz you weren't looking too good on that front stroke LOL
lol, good thing its shallow :)
