  • Sony Vaio Windows 95 isn't too hard to install. However, for a mostly trouble-free setup, follow the setup procedure as outlined in this video. Download the appropriate files and create the 86Box setup as shown in the video. After the VM is created, mount the Sony Recovery ISO into 86Box, change the BIOS setting to make the CD-ROM drive the first bootable drive, and let the ISO boot up. Just FDISK and FORMAT the drive, standard DOS style. However, after FDISK, and DOS screen will stop scrolling. However, the "Format C:" command and its prompts can still be entered "blindly". After formatting the drive, restart the VM yet again and now the Windows 95 setup should load. The Sony Emergency Recovery program should load. Just press the icons as shown in the video to restore the the original Sony Software and Windows 95 install. Note, this will take a long time (over 1 hour in my case), so grab a beer, eat a pigeon, and watch some porn in the meantime. After the Sony Emergency Program does its thing, restart the VM and the Windows 95 setup program should load. Just enter the information and let the program do its thing. Windows will restart the computer, and then Windows setup will install the appropriate drivers for its hardware.
I went through Hell and back getting the video drivers to work. To save a lot of typing, just follow the appended instructions as outlined in the video. It will save a lot of trouble in the long run. By God, setting up the video drivers were the worst. When it comes to installing drivers, not all OEM Windows are equal in this regard, as driver installations are either simpler or complicated depending on the OEM in question. Just follow the appended information in the video to a tee to save the trouble that I've encountered earlier.
The SB16 driver install was much smoother. For the Creative Labs SB16, mount the SB16 ISO downloaded earlier, and boot into Win95 DOS. CD to your CD-ROM drive with the SB16 ISO mounted and run INSTALL.EXE. The default options should work and the installation program should be able to install the drivers without a hitch. From there, restart the VM and now Sony Vaio Windows 95 should be able to load up in high-resolution mode with sound.

A good video card option for Windows 95 are the [PCI] S3 Vision964 ... ones, Windows 95 has default drivers.

I need to check that card out in the future. With my VM's, I went from the S3 864/Win3.1 to the S3 Trio in Win95 to Win98/S3 Trio/Virge for the none-Voodoo 86Box setups. I originally went with the Trio because back when MS VPC was a thing, it emulated a Trio64, so that is what I used. Now, I've used the S3 Virge on real hardware many moons ago, and while the Virge served it's purpose, when I got the Nvidia GPU's, that card went bye-bye! I will need to revisit some 86Box Win95 configurations in the future, so I will check this card out. Thank you for the info.

Thank you. Glad you like the video! Getting this one up and running was a bit trickier, but with a little navigation, this installation can be performed successfully. There was a lot of motivation to get this one up and running as I've used a Vaio in the past (Win98 install, don't remember particular model). Classic computers!

I've been getting various reports that my setup method doesn't work with with the newest builds of 86Box, unless if you change the ATAPI CD-ROM identifier to Sony instead of 86Box/Generic.
I've been making a new video with updated instructions and using the most recent 86Box as of yesterday (8/14/2024) with the Sony CD-ROM drive (and the ATI Mach64VT2 as well). Planned for next month, there was an opening in my upload schedule for August. I made a Windows ME SoftGPU howto video, but I wasn't satisfied with it. Plus, I think their is a lot more demand for Sony Win95 than their is for WinME. The video had been simplified compared to this one, as I've hadn't had video driver shennanigans this time. Stay tuned.

Just setting the HDD to 512 MB's just gave me a message that the HDD is full, so I'd recommend setting the HDD to 1999 MB's (approximately 2 GB's).

Oh yeah, don't forget to change the CD-ROM type to SONY CD-ROM CDU311 3.0h (or SONY CD-ROM CDU76 1.0i) (basically any CD-ROM type that's Sony-provided) in this current update we have, it *WILL NOT* work when choose any CD-ROM type that's not Sony.

@@sm-ftve If memory serves, the version of Win95 that shipped with the Sony Win95 Recovery media wouldn't like anything larger than 2GB (more like I never tested). The Sony Vaio bios that is supported in 86Box though allows for much larger drive configurations. This is the system that is also running the Win98 version. I went with the 1.7GB image for the primary drive while the second 512MB image was for a transfer drive to move files back and forth, which I never actually end up needing, as the SoundBlaster drivers were loaded from an ISO during the Creative Labs setup program. The various Win95 releases occurred when really large partitions were becoming a thing, going from the days of FAT16 to FAT32, with Window constantly updating, and causing compatibility issues along the way.
Also, I never had any issue with using an off-brand OEM string for the emulated ATAPI drive. I imagine that Sony knew that in time, people would probably be sticking off-brand drives in their machines. The ATAPI standard is very universal anyway, and most OEM programs (emphasis on most as some are very picky) do not care about what CD-ROM drive is in the computer as long as there is one for the installation, also like in the case with Dell Win98. At least that was the case in 86Box build 4358, which was released like a year ago. 86Box is in constant evolution. I might go back and revisit this OEM sometime in the future, once I finally get over the Win95/98 burnout.

@@robertkixmiller1459 This is at the time of today, I am posting this comment as I experienced the aforementioned issues I have. Regarding the Sony Vaio Video Fiasco, *it was easy for me* , all I had to do is to grab my S3 ViRGE floppy I have and then let it do its thing, as it asked me to restart and I clicked on "Yes", I was greeted with more colors and resolution.

you should've of set the CD rom to ATAPI, then on the CD-ROM drive options you would select sony for this to function, otherwise for others its not going to work
edit: ill give you a compliment on this video tho, good work setting it up :D
