Hi Angela...I am a very new novice at free motion quilting.....I must admit I love your swirls....I have drawn them on paper made heaps of sandwiches then it dawned on me you start off basically with a number 6 but not connect the tail then do peak and go back....it works for me.....my swirls are getting much better now that I have that in my head maybe it may work for others as well
Thanks for your videos, perfect Mother’s Day gift. Hope your enjoying your family today.
Did this on a baby blanket and I loved it was so easy to do and finish starting was great thank you so much Angela and God bless you and your family on your loss of your grandfather
I've had a hard time with the hook, but you made seen easier now. God Bless You for sharing your amazing Talent with me!!!
Your instructions are clear and concise. I practiced the swirls and I’m quite please with my results! You’re a great instructor and I’m happy I’ve found your videos!☺️
Wow! I tried this, and it actually works! Thank you, Angela. I'm just using my Tiara 2 now after 7 years of being too nervous to do any substantive quilting on it!
I love your tutorials .It gives me hope .I know I just need to practice .Practice Practice
Great instructions Angela. ♥️🇦🇺
I watched your video over and over to memorize your designs but when I actually sat down to do it my hands have mind of their own. Some of my stitches are 1/4” and where it supposed to be curvy turned out with sharp corners. I bursted out in laughter many times. Nevertheless it was fun and I’m going to try again!! Thanks Angela!
Your instruction is wonderfully helpful! Thank you, Angela!
-Jean💟
I have never done free motion quilting but am trying now. Thanks for the encouragement!
Did this on my long arm. Looks silly on some places. But getting the hang of it
Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Angela, you are amazing 😉
Love, love, love all your video classes, Angela! And what a fun time we had with you in Alaska! It all seems like a dream now that I'm back in HOT Texas. Hope the rest of your trip was wonderful!
Wonderfully instructive video yet again. Thanks Angela 🤗
Thank you for the amazing videos. In the intro video to this challenge you said you were going to show this on the domestic and longarm. When do you plan to show the longarm portion? Thanks again!
Thank you for explaining the hook. I was having so much trouble trying to figure it out. You are the best
I need to watch this over and over before I attempt it myself. You make it look so easy but it is not. Thank you!
I'm so ready to start practicing. Swirls are one of my favorites but I need practice on those hooks and my spacing. Thanks for another great tutorial!!
These lessons keep on helping. I’m going to start practicing this fmq tomorrow.
Angela thanks for all of your instruction. I have a lot of trouble with the hook but your suggestion of keeping it close to previous stitching really helps. I will be stitching along but with quilt sandwiches instead of the challange quilt as I need to use the quilting in two quilts I am making. A question: if I want to make this swirl larger for an all over pattern on a large quilt, how would you space the swirls if the foot will be too small to use for spacing? Thanks again.
Thank you Angela for this video! I was really hoping you would show how to do the swirls on a border. How do you change direction in the border while quilting a swirl? Thank you!
Thanks for good visuals on the hooked swirl. I think I finally get it!
Angela. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I really liked the video. Great learning. Brazil.😙
i enjoy your work a lot but i can't do it as well . I think because i bought a cheap presser foot ? If you could tell me where you purchased your pressor foot at and how you set up your feed dog , length and tension ? Thank you very much for your sharing.
So much fun!!! Thank you so much!!!
Hi Angela from Australia I have just found your wonderful channel it has been so helpful as I am fairly new to quilting ( I have lots of quilt tops that need finishing) How do you baste your quilts together please
It looks a lot like a whales' tail! Thanks for showing us how to do this!
CeCe J . .. I thought the same thing!!
Yay, I hope my fabric gets here soon. I would love to quilt along!!!
Thanks for sharing. You're an inspiration to me!!
Hi, I am new to FMQ and I love it. I think if I had a Long Arm I would only do the Quilting part. LOL. My question is how close to the fabric should the round foot be to the material? Thanks for your great Videos.
Thank you so much! I love your videos and the easy to follow instructions’
First I love all your quilting videos, they have given me a lot more confidence when machine quilting. But I do have a question. I always worry about both my top and back being perfectly tight when basted, to avoid getting any tucks or pleats. I notice that when you quilt I see the top quite lose, yet I never see any pleats forming on your tops. How do you avoid this?
Cathy--I was thinking the same thing too--nothing gets bunched up. That Angela--she's so talented! I liked the idea of hooked swirls in the border.
she uses iron on batting. It is wonderful. Do not use steam as steam causes the glue to disappear. The nice thing is that if it becomes unstuck because you are moving the quilt sandwich alot you just go and re-iron the sandwich together.
Do you have any instructions/suggestions for people who were unable to get the kit? I missed the challenge with the feathers as I was unsure how to go about it making a substitute sandwich....Thank you for being such an inspiration!
great video must try some of it!
Thanks Angela,
I love these videos. I'm using a HandiQuilter Avante and find that I make lots of 'oops'. I know that I need to have a lot more practice, but find it difficult to manage the handlebars and see the area that is being quilted. Any pointers for using a long-arm?
Which is this machine your using Angela? Thank you for these videos really helpful, love from uk xxx
I would like to do some of the challenges that are supposed to be on line. But I don't wish to purchase everything else on these pages that say that they are free. When they are not. This makes it very expensive to do much at all. I do like all the tutorial that she does. She makes it look easy, when I know that practise make better, not perfect, but better. I am trying to do my first quilt for my fathers 90th Birthday in may this year. Yes it wont be frilly & very beautiful, but he still is a man who knows exactly what he wants. No person could have grown up with anyone that has guided all 4 of us to succeed the way we all have. So I'm going to do my best to help with that. Only wish I could get some info on, how to practices some of these things that Angela has on her challenges, with out having to purchase everything on line to do it. I have brought a few thing on line from Bluprint, but the free things still cost me postage, when I thought they would be free.
Eilene, whenever I want a free guide, I click 'add to cart'. Then I complete the 'purchase' and download to my device...no charge. They are all wonderful resources.
Eirene, sorry I misspelled your name...
Will you be getting steel fabric materials in? I see sold out or who is manufacture so I can buy this fabric? Love your videos.
Love the swirl hook. Please tell me you do get thread shred or breakage now and then
Bernadette Johnson My machine does that shredding with just red. So I plan to get another brand for red. All my reds.
I love your videos from all your shows. I have a question: How much harp/throat space do you have on the machine you're using?
Hi there! I have a problem with swirls: my fmq foot isn't circular! I have a Babylock Jane and, for this machine, they only make oval fmq feet. Any tips on keeping my spacing regular when the edges of the foot are always changing in relation to the last line quilted? Thanks!
Sewing parts online have different fmq feet to fit your Baby Jane, I just ordered an open foot, bubble and an open foot. Hope this helps you.
I finally started free motion quilting and decided on the hooked swirl. Love you videos and I’m feeling like I can actually do this on a quilt. Love you Angela. PS. I had no trouble mastering the wine drinking. 🤣🍷🍷🍷
I’m first!! ANGELA YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!
How did you outline that circle so perfectly on the edge?
Thank you for your great tutorials. What are you using to keep the quilt sandwich together? I don't see any pins. If your using spray adhesive, what kind? I purchased some from Joann fabrics, but it keeps gumming up my needle.
505 temporary spray, is the one I found that least gums up machine, also keep a little alcohol and wipe off needle occasionally, but find that by time I need to do this I need to change needle anyway. Also have found the less spray used ( just enough to keep contact, not as heavy as when you are spray painting helps too). Have only been doing FMQ about a year or so, still have my ups and downs, but think I am doing better. Practice on material, practice on paper to get the feel of how to move your hands.
Angela uses fusible batting so she irons it in place. I like pins much better than spray adhesive. So what works for you
morning, always love your video's! What machine are you using to quilt with? The needle does not seem to bounce up and down like my machine. T
Is there any print for the swirl hook design? I want to practice tracing it
Lindo . Obrigada
Can I still receive the challenges for this Quilt Along even though it has ended?
HELP!! I can't figure out how to do the swirl hook in the border by altering directions.
Another very well done video by @AngelaWalters. I find it unfortunate, however that this video is over 13 months old & she hasn't liked or replied to a single comment. They all want you to subscribe but don't bother answering your questions when they get too popular. Sad but true.
Hi Angela! My question is a bit off topic to this particular video but I hope you can help me: I want to replace my needle on my sewing machine but it is not coming out even though I fully unscrewed the needle bar clamp. Any help?
are you sure it is the needle bar clamp you are unscrewing? When I unscrew mine the clamp is wiggly, If the clamp is loose get a pair of needle nose pliers and grasp the needle and pull down. It could be that the needle was inserted wrong when it was put in,
The swirl hooks always make me think of whale tails.
What type of sewing machine are you using?
Hi just a quick question what is the final dimension of the quilt
Am I just stupid, or I’m confused. Do you have the batting in the quilt after free quilting or do you quilt before you do the free quilting?
First mark you top, then make the quilt sandwich, backing, batting, top. Baste it, any way you like, Angela uses fusible batting , I like it on small projects, but use safety pins on the big ones. Then do your FMQ as shown. Good luck.
What machine are you using in this video?
Do you have something similar to a stitch regulator or a cruise control on your domestic machine in this video?
The foot she is using in the video is actually made for free-motion quilting with rulers. It doesn't have a stitch regulator as such, but requires smooth hand movement to keep stitches more uniform. I use my stitch regulator (BSR) foot on my Bernina for this, but switch to the "ruler foot" when I need to use her rulers. I'm sure she uses it for all free-motion because that ruler foot edge is exactly 1/4 inch from the needle so it's great for keeping stitch lines apart in a uniform distance. The ruler foot is made for every major brand of sewing machine and is adjustable from the bed of the machine so it will glide over quilt sandwiches of any thickness. You'll like it.
Jane Sublett Thank you. I was just trying to understand that she was totally guiding the machine on her own. Her stitches are so uniform, I thought she might have a regulator on her machine to keep her stitches similar. I know she is free forming the designs with her ruler foot. I guess all her practicing makes those stitches so regulated.
Are we supposed to start in the center or at the edge of one section? I'm lost, please help.
I'm pretty sure that she said to start in the middle. Replay the video, especially towards the end.
Thank you.
Your videos have helped me so much. Thank you! I was just wondering if we stopped at the border or kept going from edge to edge?
Melanie Hulm . . Some of us had this dicussion. ..you can do whatever you like. .but she went all the way out to borders in each section!
Wow, are you on SPEED? This was super fast!
the foot not the needle sorry
