These all sound great! However, if you’re on a budget they can be expensive. Try the Joyo ACTone, American Sound, British Sound, etc. for pedals the give you a flavour of Vox, Fender, Marshall, etc., and they can be DI’d to PA in lieu of an amp. They cost approx. £33 each and extremely well put together.
I was keen to check out the revered CH3 of the Diezel VH-4 (the left gain/master on the pedal, crunch rhythm to die for), but you only played through the right side channel (Ch4, which is more compressed for lead playing) The Revv sounded pretty awesome, I'd like to hear the G4 version beside it. Also the Bogners were dark horses if that's your kind of sound. Direct to the power amp ftw. Maybe use a Jim Root tele next time, it's heavy af, perfect for these pedals.
Generally, the Revv pedals all even come more to live and sound truely amazing when put directly into a power amp, not in front of a preamp! The Friedman BE Overdrive is the other way round, it only sounds really good in front of a preamp. That's the way these pedals are designed to, in my opinion.

just wanted to say the Boss Metal zone detroys this pedal! I had my cousins over yesterday to watch the game, Canadiens beat Boston in overtime by the way, and I had just bought the revv a couple of weeks ago and had rebough the metal zone. I had one in the 80's. so I start with the revv got an ok distortion but found that I couldnt tweek it any better and that it did not satisfy me, just missing perfection you know? this is paired with the Boss equalizer by the way in a v shap. so then I decide to try the metal zone that I know is very heavy, so I start tweeking to him playing this very heavy riff non stop and found many different cruching sounds but at the end of maybe 5min I found heaven no words could really explain it except for perfection. and even had room. but this spot simply was IT! crushed the revv to bites. it's distortion at max and the two middle button facing each other top and bottom buttons. the first 2 at 9 oclock and the second two at 3 oclock. around there you will find pure eargasm. Its the same as in the 80's I remembered I had the first 2 at 8 and the second 2 at 4 oclock. very close depends who's playing and pick ups etc.. but still around the same thing. this is in front of the amp. this amp has no fx loop but I remember in does days I had a peavy that had an fxloop and it sounded great both ways. The revv will be put on sale. I also have the Sabbra Cadabra for the sabbath sound that I will keep for now. I just got the Swollen Pickle for fuzz that I will be trying out. In conclusion for good distortion and huge versitility I recommend the metal zone hands down :)
You are brave, while I still have a Metal Zone, they get a lot of flack for being nasal sounding but I like mine. Also, consider that they are comparing amp simulator pedals and not distortion.

Best demo of all of these pedals. The fact that the Überschall works so much better as a preamp than as a distortion is a crucial finding that explains all the crap sounding demos.

Fair enough. Though I think this one could be very helpful if you guys had a more "modern" guitar to show the complete range of these pedals. Surely there are a lot of other videos that showcase that type of sound, but not with the same quality you guys have. That could be of great use for people like me, who don't have an easy access to those pedals. Thanks for the reply, I still love watching the channel.
Artur Ruivo good point mate! A modern heavy axe makes a lot of sense. We used modern guitars in our metal head part 2 video. You see, we learn. Ha ha! //Kris
too much gain and you get lose note definition live or recording. A lot of metal bands turn down their gain especially when doubling or live with tuned down guitars. Korn (whether you like them or not) have their gain at 9 O'Clock/3 using their Rectifiers. If you're just playing for the bedroom than yes that pedal is not for you. It's actually a clever design by Bogner.
what should I say... We both love mids and the BE-OD literally doesn't have any. What it has instead is tons of bass and treble. haha! So we made it work for us. I think it sounds pretty cool in the vid. :) //cheers, Kris
Can anyone tell me how you hook up the pedal through the power amp and how you hook it up through a preamp. I'm not sure how that works. And do either of those methods differ from just running it right through the front of the amp. I'm new to these things and I'm looking for some cool.pedals to run though my boss katana artist mkii
Hey Brian, if your amp has an FX Loop simply plug the preamp / overdrive / distortion pedal in the FX Loop Return. So the signal chain is: guitar - pedal input - pedal output - amp's FX Loop Return. But be aware: if you do this, the amp's preamp will not be in the signal chain anymore (including all the clean and distorted sounds you normally get from it). //cheers, Kris
Nice comparison, thanks! Would someone mind helping me out with a questions, I just bought a used VH4 -2 channel pedal and when I hit a note and hold it until it ends, right near the end the distortion "fizzles" out right before the note ends. I noticed this on both channels and it's not like the gain was maxed on either channel. This was when the pedal was in front of the amp. When I tried it in the Return of the FX loop I didn't notice it but also I could hardly turn it up to distort cause it was so damn loud!! I have a Mojo Mojo and an original Ibanez OD-855 so I maxed the distortion on them, used the same volume level and the distorted notes rang through till they ended, nice and smooth with no "fizzling" out. Is there something wrong with my VH4 pedal or is that just a characteristic of a really high gain pedal? Sorry for the long post. Thanks!
I seen ur comment on a another vid. I have the vh4 and tried to see what you're talking about with it fizzing out at the end and I could not replicate the fizzing...Although I bought mine new about a year ago.
Rob Legere hey man I appreciate the comment 1 Year later. I’m pretty sure there is no noise gate built in. I’ve come to believe it’s just the nature of high gain. Maybe fizzle wasn’t the best description, but it does sound like the sizzle of electricity which I love. Ha, that description probably isn’t any better but needless to say I love it and I have no concerns a year later. I do use it in front like ax distortion pedal, in the effects loop is crazy loud and of course since I posted this I have fiddled with the knobs countless times so who knows but it seems all good now.
More distortion than overdrive in this case but these pedals are voiced to sound like a particular amp (that's amp in a box pedals) and some of them can even do a preamp job.
I would have no reason to run any of these pedals they my amps power alp. I want to have versatility and use my effects, etc. So I have to use these pedals into the front of amp. Only way if ever use the power amp in is if I used a modeling rig.
I think the title of the video is misleading since you're not using them as STANDALONE AMPS straight to the speaker cabinet, but mostly as PRE-AMP PEDALS.
My fave distortion is a Texas Harmonic hotmod 800 it is awesome . It is like a better sounding hot rodded JCM 800 . It is killer check it out . Look up Texas Harmonics hot mod 800 . It is very reasonable 2 yr. Warranty .179.00
Because we all already know how humbuckers sound through them, everyone else already did their chuggy chug chug demos. Most pedals and preamps sound great with humbuckers. Smoother, compressed. Single coils are noisy, trebly, dynamic in good and bad ways, and a great test for pedals or amps. If you can get great tones with single coils, then usually you already know what to expect with humbuckers.
I'd take the Revv. Crisp and not muddy, mids not humming.
The Revv G3 all day long. Possibly the best distortion pedal ever made, in my opinion. Especially for $229.00.

This did not help me in trying to not buy a Revv G3.
These aren't amps in a box, they're just overdrive pedals?🤨
More distortion than overdrive in this case but these pedals are voiced to sound like a particular amp (that's amp in a box pedals) and some of them can even do a preamp job.
Blu Guitar Amp1?
Quilter 101 Reverb or Pro Block?
Ethos Amp?
Vox MV50?
Orange Micro Terror?
EHX Tortion?
children of bodom on a telecaster.. nice... RIP Alexi

Wow that Tele made the hairs on my arms stand up
Ok so now I've creeped you all out ........bye.....
A lot of mud in my ears on this video. Really would like some power chords and tweaking.
I would have no reason to run any of these pedals they my amps power alp. I want to have versatility and use my effects, etc. So I have to use these pedals into the front of amp. Only way if ever use the power amp in is if I used a modeling rig.
Revv g3 haste best tone
Sound no difference to a Chinese $25 distortion
The demon FX for $50 sound the same
Better off with the Freedman demon like $50 sounds the same
I think the title of the video is misleading since you're not using them as STANDALONE AMPS straight to the speaker cabinet, but mostly as PRE-AMP PEDALS.
can you actually do it?
It is super stupid idea to use a preamp pedal in a preamp...
I see too many stupid fuckigb comments below. Certain style of music never dictates what to be used.
Friedman, all day
My fave distortion is a Texas Harmonic hotmod 800 it is awesome . It is like a better sounding hot rodded JCM 800 . It is killer check it out . Look up Texas Harmonics hot mod 800 . It is very reasonable 2 yr. Warranty .179.00
Jesus Loves You
Demon fx like $45
Total nonsense to play Pantera's stuff with single coils!
Yea, a better option would be to not play that garbage at all.
Why the f did you test these on single coils.
Vh4 wins hands down
Because we all already know how humbuckers sound through them, everyone else already did their chuggy chug chug demos. Most pedals and preamps sound great with humbuckers. Smoother, compressed. Single coils are noisy, trebly, dynamic in good and bad ways, and a great test for pedals or amps. If you can get great tones with single coils, then usually you already know what to expect with humbuckers.
Uberschall sounds like shiza.
To far apart guys.what ya doing
