A note about this video: All the population figures are estimates. There is a wide margin of error, and they are intended to give a sense of scale only.
There is also some controversy surrounding the development of the Plague before 1346. I've used the most widely accepted models/theories, but there are others.
Great video as usual

Europe lost 27m (79-52)
China lost 25m (75-50)
*_India gained 2m (88-90)_*
There's not an account for India's population back then... It's just an assumption.
At least half of the Indians died of plague.
@@sanmechrocker hey ur partiality correct that few thousand Indians died coz of the black death, Most of the deaths occurred only in the kingdoms that have trade connections with China , most of the indian kingdoms were isolated from the outside world during the mid 1400s
@@sanmechrocker it spread with silk route country in silk route suffered from plague.
India was many tiny kingdoms then and isolated from the world with exception to some small areas. The himalayas prevented frequent china cross border travel.
Europe was heavily linked to china by this point as the two regions were the most developed so had the most movement of people.
India was hit though and lost millions just a smaller percent of population overall than europe, middle east and china
Given the numbers it's almost as if God is angry with Fundamentalist Christianity, considering Christian Europe did the worst.

Notice that during that same period in France, there was the hundred years war. France has 21 millions inhabitants before the plague and the war. After there were only between 8-10 millions inhabitants. France lost 60% of its pop.
The spread at the siege of Kaffa wasn't accidental, the Mongols catapulted infected bodies over the walls before leaving.

You may have heard of the norwegian footbal player Ødegaard. This is a common surname here, and originates from the plague. After all was over, half of the local farms were deserted, and thus given the name "deserted farm". Norways goldeb imperial age ended with the Black Death, killing over 50% of its inhabitants and all of the church and elite/royalty. Following it was 500 years of foreign rule called the "dark night".

3. pandemic will spread if people keep moving around
RawR Jr. RoaR Nr.1 cannot be concluded from only one example. The Spanish Flu is also just one example of a pandemic, and it is thought to have originated in the USA. That doesn't mean that every pandemic comes from there, though. So neither does that mean that every pandemic comes from China.

Thank you Ollie Bye for helping us visualise history through your videos. They are unbelievably insightful
My God has this video been impressive.
The interesting thing is that some cities came out of the Black Death practically unscathed while others were almost entirely devastated. Some towns even vanished completely because literally everyone ended up dead.
The horror that the population must have felt is unimaginable when about a third of the population died within a few years. No one could imagine a loss of life on such a scale in today's world. I mean, just try to imagine the situation in the USA if about 100 million people were to die in the next three years.
I feel like the majority of the world's population would die this time
people often forget that the black death hit asia hard as well
Yea that's true, as when somebody is talking about the black death, they're always referring to Europe only and not the rest of Eurasia.
@@crysis3015 exactly
Great vid again
The bubonic plague is speculated to have reached central China around Wuhan, from Bagan in Burma around 1320, but never affected Southeast Asia, but maybe patient zero was Burmese.
It's a while since I've seen one of your videos. I really like the updated style. Good video.
One thing I thought you could add was to have darkened bars on the chart behind the light ones, showing the original value, or perhaps showing the difference between the two, i.e. number of deaths. That way we could easily see how far it's dropped at any given time.
RUclips has got a funny sense of humor, recommending this.

Every single year the same happens
The bubonic plague is a joke, it's super easy to detect and isolate and it's rather easy to prevent
It only killed so many people back then because no-one took any precautions and it's very deadly of untreated, but in the modern world, it's the least of our worries
@@alezar2035 They didn't have antibiotics or antivirals back then, silly. Wiped out at least a 3rd of Europe's population. Some joke.
Ever since COVID-19 spread, people have been overreacting like the world is going to collapse.
ITS MUTATED FLU FOR GODS SAKE, ITS NOTHING COMPARED TO BLACK DEATH, EVEN IF IT MUTATED TEN TIMES OVER
I'm not saying that we should ignore everyone that died in the pandemic. Indeed, the current catastrophe is worse than the Great Recession and is confirmed by many sources. I am simply saying, stop overreacting, millions died in the current pandemic, tens of millions died in the Black Death, and the population was barely a billion back then.
World: PANIK
India: Kalm
Because Hindu culture is vegetarian, and respects animals, rats never became endemic in India. Because the cities are full of natural predators such as cats, monkeys, and other small animals. If you respect nature, nature will also respect you.
cool.
cats = sallmonella & CSD ... monkeys are riddled with viruses & bacteria ... most other animals are also potential spreaders
So that’s no de reason why Black Plague didn’t entered India the main reason was that Himalayas kept India iscoleted from China and Europeans don’t came to India till I4 century
dont be delusional i respect animals too but i still get sick. also being vegan/vegetarian is not logical
please tell me where do you get these music from

India: what do you mean you lost population? we didnt
I saw the plague was occured massively, but it didn’t even reached Korea.
I can't even imagine the apocalyptic atmosphere of the time, it would make a fucking book / film / series
It would have been amazing if you could make something like this for the covid pandemic. We will end up with a lot more precise data compared to 700 years ago, but of course, some governments give singificantly less information, and the pandemic spreads globally so fast that you couldn't illustrate a geographic spread the same way.
With all the data points to look through it would be a massive project, but it would be absolutely fascinating and extremely relevant.
What software are you using, AcrGIS Pro?
At some point, the Plague looked like a hand, ready to slap Europe.
Poland: close all border
American continent: wtf is happening
Imagine if an empire had spread as quickly as the plag- ohhhh yeah right.
at least all people in the comment area finally think that Yuan is a Chinese dynasty
Thank you China, very cool
Ollie Bye, how do you animate these videos?
I think there are recent studies that have the plague originating in Europe (Neolithic) and using the overland routes eventually found itself embedded in the marmot populations of East Asia.
The first bout would be the Plagues of Justinian if I recall.
Remarkably fascinating when you start deep diving into it.
It's actually been found in bronze age central Asians and it's possible that it spread to Europe even earlier with the invasion of the proto-indo-Europeans (Yamnaya/Corded ware culture) ca 3000 bc. If so, it would have acted as a biological weapon, partially explaining their rapid conquest of the continent from the local, most likely non-immune mediterranean farmer populations.
