  • You may have heard recently about costume company Rubies creating American Girl Doll costumes based on historical characters' meet dresses. If you have questions about the quality and sizing of the Kirsten costume for adults, I hope to provide some answers!!
    If you purchased the outfit in a different size, or if you purchased the Julie costume in a child's size, please comment your own thoughts below.
    Thanks for watching!

    Costume person here! Almost 70 dollars I would have either loved a cotton poly blend OR the handkerchief being separate from the dress and it being made out of 100% poly. I just hopped around and dug through my stash for a pattern to reference that would be similar to the dress. Cotton right now is going for 10 dollars a yard and a pioneer dress with all the bells and whistles would be close to 15 yards of fabric (that's not including undergarments to make things fit correctly). Just the fabric alone is 150 dollars (Not including fastenings, trim, thread, and other bibs and bobs). But most people in the historical costuming community make our garments once and use them for a lifetime. My focus is Renaissance and fabric is not cheap. When I saw the 70 dollar price tag I had a feeling it wasn't going to be too impressive. I'm honestly impressed they gave you bloomers.

      Thank you! I imagine Rubies having to pay for the AG license to make these is an important factor, too. I know for someone with your sewing skills, this would probably not feel worth wearing. And I totally get that. At the same time, there is a market for this more affordable version among those of us who do not possess those same talents with a sewing machine :) Thanks again for weighing in - I appreciate your perspective!

    Love that you just lean into the silliness and have a good time. I’m going to be sorely tempted to buy the Samantha costume when it drops, because I’m forever a Samantha Stan- but even though I understand why they’re choosing to make the original historicals in adult sizes and the currently available one for kids, they are sorely underestimating my desire to dress like Maryellen 😑.

    I knew you would be the first to get the AG costumes. Thank you I am trying to convince the twins to get the costumes. LOL you are beautiful Go for it.. It fit and does not look bad for a costume. Life is funny that way so which of your girls will be Kirsten. Maybe Grace can make you some bloomers that fit and adjust the back of the bonnet with elastic in the back. I like the costume overall. The price is not bad because I already pay that price for Disney kids costumes. I am not sure I would get one for myself. Definitely the Christmas card lol. I tried to order the Julie Albright for girls but they only have kids large so I will wait for more sizes to drop

    That's about what I'd expect from a Halloween costume for that price. (It's part of why I literally never buy halloween costumes.) If I REEALLY wanted to match Kirsten, I'd probably try to get it on sale, or on second hand, primarily for the dress, and then remake at least the spoon bag, if not the whole dang apron ensemble.

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  15 дней назад +1

      Haha - happy to bare (almost) all for the cause ;-) I do wonder how much Rubies had to pay AG for the license to make the costumes because I know those licenses aren't cheap. I think this is about what I expected, and I completely understand why someone would want it AND why someone wouldn't. I think it will come down to factors like: a person's budget, their ability to sew, and how much use they think they'd get out of it.

  • @user-yt6bu6st9j

    I love that costume on you! That is a very inexpensive costume for all the yards of fabric it contains. Costume fabric is costume fabric. I agree. People can obviously decide that they'd rather spend no money and not have the costume than spend $70 and have one that doesn't impress them. Personally, I love playing dress up, have a modest budget, and don't sew, so I'm kind of the target audience lol.

    I love that you had fun with this. It made it so fun to watch. Overall this a good value for $70. You would have to get creative, find really good deals on supplies, and cut some corners to make it yourself for that (not to mention ALL of that work!). A few easy improvements could have made a big impact for not much money: The white fabric in the bonnet ruins the look of it. If they had just used the same gingham it would have made a world of difference and couldn't have cost a whole lot. That being said, you could just cover the white part by hand stitching some gingham over it. It would be easy enough but the trick would be finding fabric that matches closely enough. The accessories on the apron are the other unfortunate part. I must say, though, that the wooden spoon helps immensely. It adds an authentic touch and draws the eyes away from the other details. It wouldn't be too hard to remove and replace the kerchief and pouch but it's a shame to feel the need to do that. For an extra $5, easily for $10, they could have fixed the issues. All in all, still great for a relatively cheap costume and it fits you really well. For your own personal comfort you can open up the side seams on the bloomers at the hip area to give yourself a little wiggle room. No one will ever see that part anyway. Just a thought. :)

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  14 дней назад

      I am definitely planning to add some gingham to the inside of the bonnet. IDK about the bloomers - I may just forego them, but I'll keep them for a while since my size fluctuates. I'm glad you enjoyed the video - I had a good time and that seems to have been a bit contagious :)

    I’m still watching a few Met Gala reviews so let’s see what Kirstie is wearing for her outfit. We even get a Vanity Fair getting dressed video!
    Seriously, thank you for (almost) baring it all for the sake of your art. For $70, I guess this is a fair costume. I would expect 100% poly as most costumes of this type are, but I was t expecting printed poly. I would have thought that as many of these as they’d make, it would be cheaper to source material with the print woven in. 🤷🏻‍♀️ what do I know. Well, I do know that a cotton cosplay outfit would probably set you back $300.
    It might be worthwhile to consider this the base costume and add a better quality piece to it every year. Maybe this year, you have Grace make you a bonnet or bloomers. Next year do the other one. Or maybe start with replacing the handkerchief and getting supplies for the spoon bag and work on that next.

I do think it's a fair costume and I'm exactly their market - someone who enjoys playing dress-up, has a modest budget, loves the idea of having an outfit like one of the AG dolls, but can't sew or spend a ton of money for a more authentic version. That said, I think I'll only be getting this one.

    Honestly, for that price, it's nice that it actually comes with all the pieces it does, even if they're fake/sewn together/etc. And because it's a bagged costume like that, I would never expect any fabric besides polyester, though that's one of the many reasons why I'd never buy a bagged costume. The only thing that's way below expectations is the limited size range. Speaking of which, I think maybe you wrote your measurements wrong on the screen? You listed your bust as smaller than your waist. But overall, it honestly looks cute, and very passable in photos/videos (but I'm definitely still glad I have my handmade one!)

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  15 дней назад +1

      The chest measurement I listed was my ribcage, where my bra band would hit. I'm a 38D. And I agree - I think it was pretty par for the course. I know they also had to pay for the AG license, so that's a factor. If I had your incredible sewing talent, I wouldn't dream of buying this lol. But alas, I do not. And I'm not planning on taking up sewing in the near future, so for people like me (who love dressing up, don't sew, and have a small budget for fun dress-up clothes) this works.

    First of all the original Samantha nightgown was made of high-quality. Call him with the little bit of satin in the scalloping. That costume looks like it was put together in two seconds, and no thought to either historical accuracy is of use or wear comfort was considered. My original nightgown felt soft to the touch, and was stitched so well that it lasted me 4 to 5 years with regular wage and use. I set up before and I’ll say it again, I would not buy this! That is unless American girl did it and did it with an eye to accuracy?

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  9 дней назад

      I understand why you wouldn't buy it. I also understand why some people would. That's why I wanted to buy one of these and review it - to help people make that decision. I decided I won't buy any more of these but I'm keeping the one I did buy and I'll use it. One subscriber said I could approach it as a base and upgrade one piece at a time, and I like that idea.

    Thanks for the review! I think I’ll pass on the costumes as the quality is pretty disappointing given the price (though that’s pretty typical with these type of costumes to be honest). I love the idea of these costumes I just wish the execution was better.

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  16 дней назад

      That's fair. I wonder how much Rubies has to pay for the AG license - that has to be one factor. That and maximizing profits and resting in the knowledge that no one is expecting great quality from them.

      IDK how much they have to pay for the AG license, but I'm sure that makes it cost more than a generic "nurse" or "pizza slice" costume. And quality-wise, I agree - it was very mid-range for a Halloween costume.

    Oh man I almost laughed out loud and would have woken up my dog when you showed the bonnet. Oh dear that “spoon bag” 🤨
    (On a completely different note, is “grosgrain” pronounced like the word “gross”?)
    I liked your bow before you put on the dress 😂😂😂 Oh no I’m sorry it feels icky! That’s too bad the bloomers are too tight but glad the dress is roomy. Better the dress to have more give than the bloomers! I don’t understand why they made such a ridiculously big bonnet. You look really cute in the whole ensemble! 😄

      Right. Like I know ppl with afros or voluminous curls often can't wear things like this, so in that regard I'm glad it's the size it is. After all, it's easier for me to alter it to be smaller than it is for someone to pull extra fabric out of thin air. But yeah...on me, that thing is huge.

      I can't wait for this years Christmas card! As for the bonnet; for historical accuracy, that bonnet would be covering hair that gets washed about once a month (in the same bathwater as the rest of the family). The length & width of the back of the hat would have to be wide enough to hide a multitude of hair care sins (not to mention it would slow down the lice trying to hop on your hair.) The pioneer life left a lot to be desired, and personal hygiene has come a long way baby. Loved this video.

    Don’t quote me on this, but I have a cousin who is a police sergeant/volunteer firefighter, and I always thought polyester was fireproof. If that’s the case, why are they telling you to keep it away from fire if it’s 100% polyester? That’s the first flag. Secondly, why is another company making cheap imitations of AG closing? If American girl wanted to do the original generation Justice, they would’ve included regular sizing as well as plus sizing for the original set of girls. This is not only a cheap invitation, but a travesty to the original generation. and as an American girl come (first generation) I would like to see an entire line of original historical characters clothing. I had the Samantha Parkington nightgown as a girl, I would love to have it as an adult made properly and in extra large sizing.

      Rubies is making these because they paid Mattel for the rights to do so. My sister in law does graphic design for a company that gets licenses for several fandoms (ex: Supernatural). In her experience, the license holder (ex: Warner Brothers) has very strict rules about what her company can and can't make using the license and they have to give final approval on any product her company makes. I imagine it's the same with AG, which means AG approved this costume. Why? Likely because they see a market for it. Time will tell if they're right or not, but there are a lot of folks who want to play dress up, who don't sew, and who don't have $300 to commission a high quality cotton version of the meet outfits.

  • @dakotatwilight
    @dakotatwilight 14 дней назад

    And this is why I don't buy ready made anything, including Japanese lolita, it is all 100% polyester, and I can't wear it, I breakout within minutes. I will continue to sew my own out of cotton. Kirstens dress in your size sewn similarly in cotton if sourced from online shops should take 5 yards if 42" wide. It is after all an adult sized children's dress.
    That being said, I still think 70 is a bit much but other licensed franchises including Disney (not Disneystore) seem to cost half to just a bit under that for same amount of fabric it really depends on the company, if you can call that fabric. Rubees seems to be more expensive than some other longer established costume companies.
    That being said glad it fit you both minus the bloomers. The hat is hilariously not done right. You look cute in your Anna braids. You could be Kirstens cousin.

      As we would say in my house, "But tell me how you *really* feel!" lmao I could feel the disdain for this costume as I read. But you sew. That opens a world of options for you. Companies like this exist because people like me exist - I love playing dress up, have a modest budget, and don't sew. It would be great if AG decided to make better quality versions of these, but maybe they suspect what I suspect - that the talented sewists in the AG community will prefer to make their own regardless and the folks who don't sew will "accept" these (so long as they're not allergic to polyester, of course).

    How brave of you to do the costume. I think you look cute in it. Remember I am an 85 year old grandma and can say "cute". Lol 😆
    I guess I expect cheap feel to a costume. I am surprised by the bloomers as I thought women of those times were large size in the hips as they cooked with the real stuff like lard and lots of butter and sugar.

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  15 дней назад

      Those women might've cooked with lard and butter and sugar, but they probably ate less and did a lot more manual labor than many of us lol. But also, I don't think Rubies was concerned with that level of accuracy when they made the costumes - I doubt they once thought about the diet of pioneer women and its impact on their hip size haha.
