I read this story as a teenager forty years ago, and reread it many times. An interest in science, specifically biology/ecology , made the story even more engrossing. Thank you for a chance to re-experience a great sci fi reading memory.
I'm old now and have read SciFi for 60 years. Science fiction made me go to college where I studied Physics/Astronomy, Biology, Photography, Sociology, Psychology, and I have 2 degrees. All thanks to Science Fiction and authors like this; Harry Harisson and many others. I recommend; Chip Slater' channel. Try it.
I stumbled on this looking for Soylent Green. Well done reading it whoever you are! Very modern book that doesn't seem to have aged considering when it was written.
This ís one of my favorite childhood books, handa down, and easily among top 10 of my personal sci-fi list. Without Deathworld, there would be no Catachan in Warhammer 40k, no Avatar, no Raingully and list go on! It deals with issues of ecology, saber-rattling, siege mentality and nation-building and interhuman tolerance, and it does so better than most ham-fisted media today. Great read.
Like every other comment here, I had to say how great the story was. The early chapters were entirely unmentioning of the later plot, but were just as enjoyable. It certainly went to a place that can't be predicted by the gambling and fleeing from mobsters introduction.
55:14 "And i always have trouble with the men. They want to buy me drinks and hold my hand." - "Well a single girl [...] has to expect a certain amount of interest from the men." - "Oh, i know that. What i don't understand is why they don't listen when i tell them i'm not interested. [...] So i tell them if they don't stop bothering me i'll break their arm." - "Does that stop them?" - "No. Of course not, but after i break their arm, they go away." ... Yes.
Yes, it is a classic! Some others you may enjoy: Space Prison ruclips.net/video/qPjAniEcb6s/видео.html A Marian Odyssey ruclips.net/video/HdQjI94Kqtc/видео.html The Time Trader ruclips.net/video/I13QLvkKqaU/видео.html
This is a lot like "status civilization" for me. Seriously riveting! Like me sitting in the dark holding my kindle with wide eyes like "what next?!" . THAT kind of riveting. Same with "status civilization". A rare find!
I have many great one's such as Planet of the Damned: ruclips.net/video/3GfBI_JX41w/видео.html Space Prison: ruclips.net/video/qPjAniEcb6s/видео.html Plague Ship ruclips.net/video/7PG7hnsUthM/видео.html and Search the Sky: ruclips.net/video/OoIjGXQpKGY/видео.html that you would probably enjoy :)
Wasn't sure in the beginning, but this audiophile thinks this is a great book, very imaginative and entertaining. Listen please you'll be glad you did. .
I realize you posted this 11 months ago. However there is actually a part to do this I think it’s called the ethical engineer. It’s on this guys channel as well and it continues the story of Jason.
Ladies - has a female friend or acquaintance ever told a lie about you to damage your reputation in your peer group? Most or all of you will answer in the affirmative. It is the most common form of aggression women demonstrate - reputational damage. Why then is the default position to believe all woman?
Metamorphosis Alpha. The keys on the elevator.....pushing five does NOT take you to floor five. It takes you UP or DOWN five decks from where you are. Take a while for the adventurers to figure this out. YES you have captured a laser rifle.....but the battery is dead, and where will you get more? Deathworld is pretty predictable concept. Either they figure it out too fast, or they get frustrated and quit. Search "Tollenkar's Lair" on SCRIBD or Google.
Here's another one of them strange coincidences. I took a picture of the Moon one night through the trees and I have that little critter on film. I would kid my friends about this little creature runs around in the Treetops at night. Wait until they see this picture of him.
Good premise but bad execution. Author has an IQ that is much too low to write an interesting story, without making dialogues and behaviors completely and utterly unreasonable and foolish.
This Story Starts out at a Fantastic pace !! Unfortunately only to go down like the Titanic ☠️ With unadulterated Sci-fi Piffle which ruins what seems to be a great Tale 💩
Enjoy and subscribe for more!
Really good story

Honestly this book would make a sick anime

Read this book as a teenager many years ago. Always wanted this to become a movie.
It evidently was the inspiration in part for James Cameron's "Avatar."
@@paulgilbert8899 wow that’s so cool I never knew that thank you for telling us
Lovely book and excellent narration. The plot draws you in, and the resolution is unexpected. Thank you to the narrators for putting this up here.

I love this story, and I love this channel.
I recommend Chip Slater's channel to any and all SciFi lovers. It's a treasure!
Read it in my childhood. Now listening it while I work. Still a great book.

@@jonahchickering4908 But dangerous. Most women simply aren't strong enough to mix it with a man.
Certainly Wife material.
Loving this! The story and narration! Halfway through (roughly) and looking forward to second half! Thank you!

Any Adeptus Astartes chapter would have a field day recruiting on this planet.
A perfect recruiting world, writen long before W40K existed.

Welcome!
This book is great. If Tarantino wrote Sci Fi this would be it causal violence, and what seems like dead pan delivery!!!
Luv it...
Very good story, has not aged at all.
I will steal this one day for a DnD or Traveller campaign. It was awesome.
