On our brand new episode of Chef’s Night Out, we head to The Motor City to pay a visit to chef Craig Lieckfelt, owner and operator of the acclaimed pop-up restaurant Guns & Butter, a spot set to open a brick and mortar location in the near future. After wrapping service at a pop-up held at the Shinola store, we hit the town with Craig and friends to visit some truly unique spots around Detroit. From sipping white whiskey at Two James Distillery to devouring chili dogs at Lafayette Coney Island and dancing to live music at Cafe D’Mongo’s Speakeasy, Craig showed us the real Detroit, a city filled with great food and even greater people. And, in true MUNCHIES style, the night ended with a good meal of arancini, chicken parm, and gnocchi from Detroit’s Supino Pizzeria. Enjoy.

It's a tragedy, but a lot of the people helping to "revitalize" Detroit right now are all like the douche bros in this videos. The guys at Two James, Astro Coffee, Shinola, and Guns & Butter (I could go on) all think that they're the coolest thing since sliced bread for sticking around in Detroit. They're there because it's cool to be, not because they love it.

Funny how many of the titles of Munchies' vids highlight the actual restaurant, but this one highlights two things unrelated to the restaurant -- sorry, "popup".
Also, unlike a some of Munchies' other vids, there's no great story here to how Guns and Butter came to be. There's also no great food. I get that this is a popup, but the asparagus looked so bland they could've been plated at Ruby Tuesdays. And the head chef couldn't even be bothered to be sober enough to hype his own creation. I didn't feel like he had any passion for his own food or food in general. I watched the Ramen Tatsu Ya vid and saved the address on my phone even though I'm over 1000 miles away. I watched this and realized I had one less reason to go back to Detroit.

After watching a bunch of these "Chef's Night Out" videos, I think I've cracked it. Chefs, especially young, talented chefs, tend to be very ego driven. They're trying hard to be the alpha dog of their local scene. It's all about "look at me, look what I can do!". Combine that with a camera stuck in their face and a bunch of booze in their stomachs, and you're gonna get some fairly douchey behaviour. I suppose if the price we have to pay to enjoy the art is to tolerate the artist, then that's not too much to ask.
