  • As Elvis classic's go each fan may have their own idea as to what they regard as Elvis' signature tune. To me it has to be Suspicious Minds because unlike some of his early 50's rock 'n' roll classics like 'Hound Dog' or 'Blue Suede Shoes' which were cover versions that he made his own Suspicious Minds is more an Elvis original as Mark James' original failed to chart and as it was not a commercial success was passed to Elvis.
    Suspicious Minds also fits perfectly into the period which would become known as the Elvis renaissance just after the 68 comeback special and was one of the many gems which emerged from Memphis' American Sound Studios in early 1969.
    Some fans may be aware of the story but for those who do not it may be difficult to imagine, but one of the music industries most famous, popular and revered recordings almost never happened.
    The song itself was written by Mark James, who would also compose 'It's Only Love', 'Always On My Mind', 'Raised On Rock' and 'Moody Blue' for Elvis.
    After recording the song on 23 January 1969 Elvis and the musicians must have thought that another song was 'in the can' but events had just began to unfold.
    American Sun Studios was the first and only time that Elvis would record with an independent producer and in an independent studio (Radio Recorders could have been regarded as such but it was often hired by RCA for it's artists) and the Suspicious Minds events would be the cause of this.
    Chips Moman who founded American Sound Studios, produced the 'Memphis Sessions' and helped guide Elvis in finding this new relevant style that emerged during the recordings and did so by being anything but a 'yes' man and he also owned the copyright to Suspicious Minds.
    Unhappy with this Col. Parker had his deputy Tom Diskin demand that Moman give up half of these rights to which he responded by accusing them of stealing and threatened that the recording would never see the light of day. It apparently took the personal intervention of Elvis and RCA's Harry Jenkins before a compromise was reached and for once artistic endeavour triumphed over monetary gain.
    One further twist would emerge as the song went into post production. Chips Moman disclosed that Jarvis was never happy with Elvis recording at American Sound Studio, saying "it was a control thing." Moman added, "So when Jarvis took the tape of 'Suspicious Minds,' he added this crazy 15-second fade toward the end, like the song was ending, and brought it back by overdubbing to extend it. I have no idea why he did that, but he messed it up. It was like a scar. None of which mattered. Soon after the song was released, Elvis was back on top of the charts."
    Unsurprisingly the song was included in Elvis' setlist for his return to the stage on 31 July 1969 and the single was released during that initial Las Vegas engagement and a worldwdie hit was born.
    The song remained part of Elvis' show almost on a permanent basis for the next five years before being dropped in mid-August 1974. It was revived twice during August 1975 through Elvis' request box shows and the final version was this from 19 August 1975, dinner show, the second show of the engagement.
    The first live renditions are strikingly similar to the original studio master but the song's tempo would increase almost year on year until about 1973 where it levelled off but bore little resemblance to the original.

    I think people are giving him a hard time here. Hes singing just as great as his famous performance of the same song only 5 years prior, and he's moving almost just as much which wasn't very common for him around this time. He's human, he had good days and bad. Maybe more bad in 1975-1977 but this was certainly a good day for him

      In all fairness to Elvis ‘75 was the year Elvis got some very bad news about his health and from this point on it was a slow physical decline to his death in ‘77. Given that, he still had within those years some great performances sprinkled in but you would never see the 1970-1973 Elvis ever again.

    • @SuperBeachbum74
      @SuperBeachbum74 Год назад +1

      In aloha special performed world wide, I believe he feared being off key so didn’t move much. He also was reported feeling ill but I wanted the world to see the Elvis of 1970 so they’d see how dynamic he really was. I agree with you, I watched and own the special but he didn’t move much yet the show he did later at the coliseum in New York , he was far more dynamic that same year. I’m a fan forever since 1963 and saw him in Chicago 1972 , great show. We can be honest and not haters as the negative do. I wish he had gotten the help he needed . I have family with drug issues and if no one takes charge, you won’t because they control you. Very rarely does someone kick them on their own.

    Elvis était très beaux mais pour lui la tenue de scène était très très très importante il tenait a être vu avec magnificence pour pas que ces fan ne le perdent pas la concentration de lui même . Personne n'a eux un moment d innatention lorsqu'il se produisait chaques fois les jumpsuis était somptueux . Elvis disait je fait le show avec ma voi mon jumpuit et l'orchestre les choristes font tout le reste et même si joe guercio était un vaniteu comme john wilkinson et james burton pouvait pas s encadré . Le show était parfois formidables et des fois moyens .

    This was the Vegas engagement which he had to stop for health reasons ... you can see he's clearly bored here by the way he holds his mic, by the way he sings and by the way he walks around. No energy here. But he would return to Vegas in december and would give all killer shows.

      The long summer tour and straight to Vegas with no time to rest caused all that

    • @Martinjr1975
      @Martinjr1975 Год назад +1

      @@harleyalderson3533 Well i do not agree, the last concert of the summer tour was in Ashville on the 24th of July. The Vegas engagement started on august 18th, give or take a few days earlier to rehearse and to get in the Vegas mood, means he had 3 weeks to rest and do nothing at all ... i only have that once a year. He didn't tour or play Vegas between october 74 and march 75. There were 3 tours untill Summer Festival 75 and between each tour there was at least 3 weeks of ... seems plenty of free time to me ... i never had that much free time ... he was just bored with it all and probably doing way to much uppers/downers. He quit the uppers after this season for a long time ... hence the weight gain in december. By august/september 76 he was back on uppers and you see him slim down spectacularly until his last concert in Pittsburg '76.
