I love your understanding of Katara - a lot of people, children AND adult viewers alike, hate katara for not being open and for being so brash with our beloved baby honeybunch emo kid zuko. But it makes sense - she made the mistake of trusting him once before and had she used that spirit water on Zuko’s scar, Aang would have been solidly dead now. Also, that’s her man! She doesn’t play about her man!! She deserves her own personal zuko redemption arc!
I'm honestly suprised that people were annoyed by that, it might be one of my favourite parts about this episode as it showed off so many different perspectives of how the Group feel about Zuko and Katara getting the most intense makes so much sense. A huge thing about her character has been how trusting she is, with Jet, Zuko and the latest Hama so I loved that she'd gone from being so trusting to learning from it and actually keeping her distance to keep the group safe. I think it's also a really cool perspective shift as now Zuko's being all awkward and emo and how Katara is the one becoming serious and scary so I'm really excited to see how their relationship will be expanded when it's at this state.
The reason the assassin wouldn't stop attacking Aang is either of two possibilities. 01: It became personal. 02: Azula discovered that Zuko hired him and paid him triple to work for her instead. I'm more inclined to believe the first, though.
I truly don't think they changed Zuko personality at all for this episode to match the others'. He's always been a little goofy when he wasn't fighting or angry before, only it didn't happen often. That part of him never got the chance to mature and develop since he was thrown into war and trauma so young, so this is just what is left when you remove the anger and hatred. We have seen him act like this in flashbacks as well. I think he just never had the opportunity to grow in that regard. I don't see it as "he's good now so we make him suddenly goofy" 😅. But great reaction. Love that you were so accepting of everyone's POV because yeah, no one's on the wrong here.
Also, Aang was always avoidant. He has the avoidant personality type; but he has to learn to commit, and choose what is worth commiting to. Not because he is a coward as avoidant people often are; he is brave. But he is a child; and his cultural values are heavy on detachment and freedom. Most of his struggle comes from this.
That's honestly so true, so used to seeing Zuko being so serious and brooding and this side of him came out very few times that just seeing this for so long felt like a huge change. I think I just really love how the tone of characters differed between the sides, Aang is obviously the goofier and Azula, Mai and I guess Ty Lee would be the exception, are all far more serious, so to get to see Zuko go on this very big shift as he finally got to let go of the anger and hate felt like he lined up with the more positive side/the good guy side.
Yeah it's kind of the whole point of team avatars that it's fire, water, earth and air they make team avatar they make the avatar and then obviously there is Aang being the avatar, that was like clearly always the plan it's just that we were always missing Zuko, but it wasn't obvious from the beginning, I think it was relatively clearer that all of his teachers would be children, like you've got Toph and Kotara to teach him and water and now Zuko to teach fire and he was like a child prodigy for air, but it makes sense for all of them to be kids, so it makes sense that his fire bending teacher was always going to be someone his age or around his age, also with the reveal earlier that Zuko was related to avatar Roku, and made it pretty clear that he was supposed to help or that this was inevitable, but like I said there's a reason why they're called team avatar, but like I said they were just always missing fire. It's something I was also waiting to see you react to because I think a lot of us who have already watched this show, we know about his character development throughout the three seasons and he gets so close in season two he's not really hunting the avatar anymore, but at the same time he's not let it go completely and then he starts to only for the idea of seeing his father and being a part of the family again, that's the only reason that he turns against them in the finale of season two, it was never really about his honour at that point it was more about just acceptance from his father, but that was tied to what he thought was his honour so that makes sense why he would go backwards it's like five steps forward three steps back, he keeps getting so close and then goes backwards, but at least that time he regretted it and didn't know what he wanted because he had already kind of gone through the change it's just that he wanted to go home and he wanted to be who he thought he was supposed to be, but now he's found who he really is thanks to both the wise words of Uncle Iro, and the experiences he had in the final nation earlier, that have helped him realise who he's meant to be. So now things are gonna be different as we go into the finale of season three.
I think they just did such a good job with having Zuko's story feel like it could go either way, I would have fully believed he could turn back to his Father and become a true villain or become good, but the idea of him joining has always been in my mind because it just fits for the theme of the show but the writing has been so good it made me question if it would ever happen. Love that all of Aang's teachers have been children as it allows for all of them to grow while also teaching Aang, having an adult become a main character as a teacher makes it very difficult to develop them but here all of them can grow. Really looking forward to the final now as this sets up so much and makes the team feel so complete.
One of the things I loved about Avatar is that it is realistic, unlike series or anime coff Naruto coff, they didn´t not forgive Zuko for everything bad he has done to Aang and his friends, especially Katara who was the first to trust. Toph didn't live through that time when Zuko was chasing Team Avatar, so she didn't feel that hatred.

Everyone, even the Fire Lord and the Fire Nation have to be treated like they’re worth giving a chance.* Aang now: *There’s no way we can trust you after everything you’ve done. We’ll never let you join us.* I guess Zuko had used up all of his chances 🤷🏻♀️. I’m glad that even though Zuko is a part of the group, he’s not in the group like one of them, because that would be just unrealistic. Like Toph said, there’s not a lot of firebenders in a line, wanting to teach the Avatar firebending. Jeong Jeong was a bad teacher for Aang. And they may let Iroh to teach him firebending, considering that the last time that they saw each other, he gave them time to escape Ba Sing Se; but they don’t know where he is. Whether they like it or not, Zuko is there, offering to teach the Avatar firebending.
Yeah, Zuko really used up all his goodwill with these guys and I love how it was handled here, it's not like he's been a petty villain who they just don't want to be around, he's been a true threat to them who's nearly killed a few of them on multiple occasions so it makes it so real that Aang wants to insure the safety of his friends over immediately trusting Zuko, he really needs to earn his third chance as he has had many occasions where he could have helped them. Really hoping it will take a while for Zuko to be fully with the group as this episode cemented how much distrust is there and I don't want that resolved quickly.
Everyone always thinks it's pretty reasonable for zuko to firebend at toph cause she sneaked up on him but why would he ask who's there AS he's blasting fire?if he just waited a second he would hear a squeaky voice and know he wasn't being ambushed,what if iroh was waking him up?he would have burned iroh
True, it was a stupid decision but I think it adds a bit to where his mind is at, with him leaving the fire nation and the hate and rage behind he's no longer in combat mode and his fighting disciple is a little shaken.
Alright klepto Katara, a bit hypocritical of accusing Zuko of stealing, especially since he didnt steal her necklace, she carelessly lost it and he picked it up. I deeply dislike Katara, she is such a hypocrite. Also, I always hate when characters (particularly the main characters) act like people they dont like can never ever change and grow, while expecting everyone to accept how much they have changed and grown.

Exactly; we've seen Zuko in awkward situations before; the first thing that comes to mind is his date with the girl in Ba Sing Se.
