It's an expensive firearm so it's too bad it does not come in perfect condition. Ruger Revolvers are good guns. They should be delivered in proper condition. Enjoyable video. Thanks for the information. I have a Ruger Revolver GP100. Model number 1715. Three inch barrel. 357 Magnum. It's my first firearm purchase. The Alaskan is on my wish list. Again, thanks for all your advice.
For a production gun, it's well made and solid. I wouldn't buy anything else. It's modular design makes it easy to fine tune. If you want perfection, then Freedom Arms is where to look, but now you're at least doubling the cost. As far as double action revolvers are concerned, Ruger is the only way to go...
Finally bought my Alaskan .454, after selling one awhile back. Did all the detailing you suggested in this video and also replaced the trigger latch spring with a 10lb. weight and kept the hammer strut spring stock. Very happy with the resulting smooth action! Appreciate this video and your instruction.
precisionmarksman the Brethren welcome you back to the fold!... if your looking to replace your sights, I think I'm liking the XS Sights Big Dot sights and I may be installing them soon.
Bongdu Dugenio I got the XS sights and I'm working on it right now. I'm hoping for a few cool days before I continue. It's been a hundred plus in the man cave lately...
I've got one in 454 and love it. It locks up tight as a tick on all six chabers when in battery, very accurate. It is built supe strong and ought to last a lifetime. It beats the 44 magnum version in my opinion because of it's ability to shoot anything from very mild cowboy .45 Colt ammo, on up through the Buffalo Bore 45 Colt heavy stuff, which has more power than the 44 mag. and on up to full house 454 loads, for fearsome knockdown a raging brown bear power! Great LITTLE/BIG gun!
Thanks for the insight man! I was looking at revolvers in a gun shop a few days ago and as soon as it hit my hand I had a hard time letting go.. It just felt right, I have a S&W 29 w. 8 3/8" bbl and that thing is a pain to carry.. Glad to see you polished everything up on the inside, I do that to all my guns and people can't believe how nice they feel.
OLEMITE, I know this is an old video, but I was hoping you could help me get my SRH Alaskan back together. I disassembled and reassembled with no problem a few years ago. I just took it apart again to get the frame done and getting the cylinder release back in the gun with the spring and detent is proving impossible. I am not sure if I mixed up the springs or not, but I am unable to get the release seated in place with the spring. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you
Good video. Where did you pick up the fiber optic sight? The fact that you mentioned the problem you had with installing the sight on your friends gun does all of us a good service.
@survivaleveryday There could be disappointment with either gun. I got my 454 because after two boxes of ammo, the recoil was too much for the previous owner. If you “settle” for the 44 Mag when you really want a 454, you may not be as happy as you could be. I waited over a year to score mine for $800. A week later, Bass Pro Shop had a new one for $929. My buddy is completely happy with his 44. The major deciding factor is how much recoil you are willing to absorb.
I got a friend who is a cop and I let him shoot the Alaskan. I kept telling him this will be your new back-up gun. He was laughing until he shot it. He was surprised how smooth it was and how accurate! That is with 45Long Colts of course. But he was no slouch with my Entertainment rounds either. Thanks for the comment.
mines a 44 mag standard SRH with cusom cut barrel 2 3/4", trijicon sights w/ the front one jbweld'd on...till it flew off after bout 3000 rounds. Spent 5+ hrs lookin fer it, to no avail. That's 70 freakin dollars gone. Dissapeared into the winds of history. 4 now i'll be attaching a plastic high vis front site i cut off my pellet rifle. Before i lost the sight, i had been gettin 8" pattern at 25 yrds...at night. Not to good but not to shabby either.
@Levergun4570sbl Cool. Thanks for the response. I haven't shot my Alaskan yet but I suspect it will be fine. I have a Super Blackhawk Hunter that has a 7.5" barrel and it has a .006"/left and a .005" right. That thing is a tack driver with a 240gr Oregon Trail Laser Cast SWC over 8 grains of Unique. I'm gonna start with that load on the Alaskan see what it does. I have a couple more to try as well..
@KBFabsLLC My 7 ½“ is .008" straight across. The Alaskan is .005" from the Left and .003" from the Right. I can see the difference in the gap on each side. I don’t know if that matters. It shoots fine. I’ll check my buddies 44mag maybe tomorrow and let you know. We will finally be installing a new HiViz front sight on it as well as a Williams Fire Sight rear.
I'm looking at if from the mental perspective you from the physical. If there's one thing that we can agree on it's that Ruger should have put the fiber optic front sight on in the first place. 10-4
@Levergun4570sbl I would love to see that - it's the one part I have never found a decent video for, and while I think I would be able to do it myself, it's just nice to see someone else walk through it.
@SteelBustingBiker TBH I'm glad Ruger had the brains to add an adjustable rear sight, how many revolvers have you shot with fixed sights? Every one I've shot (and that is quite a few) have never hit exactly where the sights show.. there are several revolvers I never shoot simply because they're hitting 6" to the left and 12" high. If I was a "Professional Guide" I would want any and every gun I carry to hit exactly where I point it, after all what good is a gun if you can't hit anything with it?
I like the 454 Casull best. The unfluted cylinder just looks too cool. Power wise there is no comparison. The 454 Casull does more (fps & ft/lb) at 100 yards than the 44 Mag does at the muzzle. That is some serious power.
Quick question.....what is your barrel/cylinder gap on that .454? I just got the .44mag version and mine measured right at .008" Seemed like a big gap for this type of gun but Ruger's spec's are .010" so it's within tolerance.
@SteelBustingBiker You're right, 99.8% of the time in any close encounter sights aren't used, from a bear attack to a robbery.. but i wouldn't feel confident packing a firearm that I couldn't accurately shoot in a low stress environment like my back yard, let alone on an adrenaline rush with something about to kill me. Sure it might work, but if you aren't confident in yourself you're going to lose...
Well I ended up with the 44mag. but I am still going to get the 454. I have to get the state police to add it to the gun roster with have here in my gun unfriendly state :( I shot 240xtp JHP with 1045 FPS not bad recoil at all, got to try a hotter load next and a 300xtp JHP.... Still looking for my 454
I have been looking for one for 6 months and have seen that they have gone up in price(second hand)( I have the sp101 357, love that little gun). So If I cant find a 454 under 1000 I will go with the 44. Any thoughts on if I will be disappointed...
My belief is that Ruger missed it on "The Alaskan" with adjustable sight and bead. One of the strongest double actions? Now think about it? Rather than a taper barrel and un-fluted cylinder Ruger goes with what they have in the Super Redhawk; less barrel and redesigned front sight? Think, would be possible for a Professional Guild to pack a reliable weapon whereas if the situation arises pull that puppy out without hanging up on the holster or hooked on a jacket? It's not a target gun. JMO, SBB
Great video. I got mine 2 days ago. I would like to make those changes to mine. Being a newbie, can you recommend a good gun tool kit to reproduce what you've done? Tools and front sight model # Thx again
@the1laf Understand. But, I you have ever been near taking out by a pissed off Boar...really don't have luxury of yanking out a "Guide Pistol" and using sights? It's really more like putting the dame thing into it's heads and pull the trigger! 2 seconds is all one has to live another day! Ask the 2 Hunters who were killed by a Griz, if they had time to line up their "44 Smiths" while they got hit by a Train? Again..moot argument on what is best for "Alaskan Back-up"?
that Alaskan is sweet !!! I was thinkin on the 500 for my next but now , 6 rounds not 5 and the coolness factor ....wow ! however I have a 44 red hawk , and that trigger ,I don't think that I could take it apart and reassemble , but wow !
Bullet jump I think is a minor issue in a revolver. I would look at the quality & characteristics of your components if you load. Some powders are not as accurate as others. Some bullets don’t like to be under powered or sometimes they are just not an accurate bullet. I think factory magnum ammo is better quality than factory special ammo from what I have seen. Or maybe a concentration problem. You concentrate more when shooting the mags and let up a little with the specials?
I put a Crimson Trace laser grip on my gun and carry it for self protection while bear hunting. The gun is freaky accurate! I've shot three shot groups at forty yards that wre inside a soup can lid! If it were legal to use deer hunting it would do the job (the laser sight is not legal for hunting in my state)
Hi there just wondering about the RSHA hammer, I had mine for nearly 4 years now and notice hair lines scratches on the left and more so on the right side. Do you think it is because a possible bent hammer strut? I notice several vids on RUclips with other owners have them to. This year I plan to trick her up. Lastly, if this firearm is so much in demand just wondering why there not many after market accessories available, including holster and such.
@DTesch357 I have pretty much disassembled and re-assembled everything on different videos except the trigger guard. If you really want to see that. I can work on one. Thanks for watching.
I have a couple videos that will show how to disassemble everything except for removing the firing pin. The Super Redhawk 454 Casull and 44 Mag will disassemble the same way.
Very cool gun, I have one. Just some constructive criticism, please put some energy and excitement on your voice -- I literally fell as sleep as I watched your video. Cheers!
I have the 44 version coming very soon.. after watching your vids I already want to upgrade sights lol and polish everything. Great vid!
Great review

@@TheRealOLEMITE Thanks for your advice. I appreciate your input.
You could weld on the bottom of the sight file it back to size and re-drill it, saving the sight.

wow same here in North TX just saying stay hydrated brother
What a beautiful weapon.
@KBFabsLLC Freedom Arms gap there's .004-.006. Mine was made for metallic silhouettes with a gap @.003 last time I gauged it. 20 years ago?

looks like you done a real precision work on that ruger, pretty nice work IMO and nice vid too. peace out
I got mine from kentucky gun co. the price goes up and down often so you have to be ready to hop on it when it's low.
Excellent video. I'd love to see one that is a step - by - step of the complete disassembly of the Alaskan, or perhaps your Super Redhawk.
@survivaleveryday

I bought mine from Midway, but also Brownells, Optics Planet, or directly from HiViz and others.
I used a 32oz. Dead Blow Ball Peen Hammer and a smooth flat hardened steel bench block.

My buddies 44 Mag Alaskan is .004 on the left and .005 on the right.
Also the 454 Casull is 1/8” longer than the 45 Colt so that it cannot be chambered into a 45 Colt gun and blow it up.
