Misbegotten dignity marks the faces of those who live to die.
They tread through putrid water that rests in a concave pit.
Shallow yearning fills their bodies, and they begin to undergo a most morbid metamorphosis.
Wings grow mold and snap from their brittle backs,
Spines contort and reshape to the vile song of the river.
All flows forward until reaching the bitter end.
But an end is not enough, they will die a thousand times for their foolishness.
How could they possibly believe that this is significant?
The river’s song will never cease, it will reshape them until they are not themselves.
It will tear away the flesh, and meld new bones into their wilted vessels.
It will hold them by their jaw and force them to stare into its foul waters.
To relive all that was, and to burn all that will be.
They will want to forget, want to look away from it all.
But the neurons sewn into their skulls will keep them awake, making them feel every torn tendon and shattered limb.
Festering and rotten, they now sit in a pit of filth and sludge.
This way lies the path to ruin.
This way lies the path to soil.
This road is paved in the deaths of a thousand souls who came before.
This road is paved in the pain of a thousand worthless wretches who puke up their bowels.
They cling to their meaningless cysts, reveling in the suffering of their lost memories.
Membranes of cruel disease mar the spoiled landscapes they paint.
Withering within their delusions they strive for salvation, a dream beyond realization that will never arrive.
When will they realize?
When will I realize,
that to live is to decay?
