Tbf, I don't fully think is his fault Xbox is like this. His predecessor did huge damage for the brand. Xbox is definitely in a better position than it was in the xbox one era.
However, its really stupid to lay off everyone. They literally gave Bobby koDICK 300+ million to make him quit. They definitely have more than enough money to keep these developers.
The sad part is that, even if Phil Spenser left, they still would have closed the studios. While I'm indifferent whether Spencer should have been fired, I believe it's more a Mircosoft who is at fault. In the end, you cannot fight your parent company

The real problem is that Microsoft is the grandfather of short term tech employment. Hopping from contract to contract goes back Microsoft's pushback against full time employment. However this runs counter to how art is made. Mastering a craft, developing a style, and raising senior talent all require long term mentorship and iteration. The reason Nintendo can deliver quality on a 10 year old toaster is because they have a 98.8% employee retention rate. And as long as Microsoft keeps making shortsighted employment decisions, Xbox will never catch a break.

    • @user-ek4ox5qm8w
      @user-ek4ox5qm8w 3 месяца назад +1

The problem with this is you're not gonna keep a construction crew on payroll for years if you're only gonna need to renovate your house a few times in your life. If anything, stable employment for game developers makes about zero sense, because the manpower needs of every individual project are unique. A skillset that is essential for one game might be useless or even detrimental to another. So you either keep people around and pay their wages out of your pocket, not getting your money's worth... or you keep making the exact same game again and again, turning art into a factory in the process... or you only ever keep around a set of specialists you need for the particular project you have in mind.

This summers Xbox event is probably the most important in the companies history. Fans are not happy, gamers don't expect to see many Xbox games and when they do come out they are usually bad. They have alot of stuff announced but it's spread over live the next 5 years and alot of the big hitters are completely MIA. The brand is failing at this point and as someone who has preferred the Xbox ecosystem over Playstation since the 360, when the next console generation comes out if they don't make changes they are going to be killed worse than we have ever seen before.

Are they ahead, though? Basically, accusing studios of being "not what they were?" I'm sure Phil Spencer would love this explanation. Turns him into a hero who saved us from bad studios. In all this "reasoning," there is not a single word about the actual reason anyone can see: MS bought AV/B for $70B. Now, they devised a business plan to earn that money back. For that to work, they need to earn billions every quarter. No small studio can bring that kind of cash to the table. Hence, they got chopped one by one. And not because of that dumb comparison to castle bricks. It doesn't matter how many bricks you replace; your castle won't turn into a blender or stove as long as they are bricks. The same applies to studios: every company in the world has people coming and quitting, but as long as they can teach new employees, they'll continue making the same good products.

I don't normally comment. I agree with the idea that different people need different styles of leadership. I was studying to become an addictions counselor back in 2017 to 2019 (diploma program, I'm not a licensed counselor still working towards more education) and one of the courses we had to take was an ethics and leadership course. I learnt there that leadership styles can almost be put to a diagram ranging from goal oriented leadership to instruction oriented leadership, everything inbetween being different variations of the two styles. At the time I worked at a youth centre and I feel it showed there. When it came to the end the day clean up some kids you could just say "tidy up the music room" and they'd kill it, other kids though would need a check list. Two extremes of that so called diagram or whatever, but I feel it checks out. Ones leadership style should match the needs of the person you're leading, and leaders should be able to adjust their leadership style to the needs of the person they're leading.

I agree, to a degree, that these studios weren't what they used to be, not a reputation level, neither on staff level. But the name of these studios were representing a value that Microsoft was willing to pay for. Even if their light is dimmer they are the names that we were excited for. This argument is valid for every studio, be it Blizzard or Bungie. You see the track record of a studio, you no what you can expect from them, and measure everything they do to what they did. Yes, the staff changes, now more so then ever, but an entity is more than the sum of its parts: it has its own history, workflow, tradition even. Closing studios is never a good thing from a creative and PR standpoint, because the consumers will see it as a loss, and there will be no redemption arcs for games like Redfall. It may makes sense from a business standpoint, but it will bite back (pun intended) in the future.

Tango game works was created as a talent incubator studio, that’s a big reason why some of the leads left, they had developed the talent they needed for other projects, but they still left Tango in very good shape. Xbox just shot them down without giving them a shot. And now Microsoft has no choice but to focus on Europe developers because they screwed over a Japanese studio with established pedigree, Japanese people already have a contentious relationship with foreigners, but when they finally give a foreign company a chance and then that company comes back around and pretty much gives them the finger, in a country that values honor and loyalty above all else, you’re done. That’s it, decades will pass before another bone is thrown your way.

I guess the problem comes in where people leave and then they have to outsource the work to another company. Every AAA game has like 20 different studios listed in the credits. It's just weird that with the advancements in technology and stuff being easier and easier to make that games keep costing more and more.

Lots of people come and go e livery year. I sign lot of new people petition recruitment every year, so to do all of my other directors managing their service group. What doesn’t ever change. Us, the senior managment and we’re what drive the quality, are responsible for it.
Take Rockstar Games, until recently with their departure (which may now mean they go on the decline) they were the same main guys running the show and hence you always got a great product.

Games make a bulk of their revenue on their first few weeks of sales, and if your game is put on a cheaper subscription service, you as the consumer are more likely to just not buy the actual game at all. Hi-fi Rush was doomed the moment it launched on Game Pass as it guaranteed at a lot of people would never buy it in the first place.

Not only is management probably trying to run their team like a technical team, Xbox as a whole seems to have this idea that there is a formula of success and they just want to exploit all of that success. That's not how games (art) works. And Phil says weird sh*t too, like when he mentioned he doesn't aim for or expect 10/10 games, but that 6s and 7s are totally fine. What?? You should ALWAYS be aiming for 10/10, whether you reach it or not. They all seem to think "live service" is the secret sauce. How's that going for you? You know how Halo Infinite would have been successful? If you finished the campaign and the story, and made a straight forward multiplayer with lots of maps, modes and sandbox items, then it would have been at least a 9/10 Halo game. Make some story expansions (paid) and update the multiplayer maps (free) along with those expansions, and you have a successful game both commercially and critically. What did you do instead? You hired a bunch of contractors to stitch together some half-arsed version of the original planned campaign, invested into "live service" infrastructure for the multiplayer thinking Halo fans wanted to buy 30 dollar skins instead of have a complete game to play (and promote and invest back into).
Forza has the most uninspiring menus, systems and atmosphere. There is no fun campaign, it's just BS time wasting systems and, once again, everything is modelled for this "live service." After all of those years there's nothing truly NEW or "next gen" about the game.
Gears isn't as successful as it used to be because you're bringing your BS leftist corporate values to a game that used to be edgy, gruesome and a good time for bros, made by the biggest "bro" games director in history. Now it's some safe corporate, boring and uninspired mediocrity that doesn't resemble Cliffy's Gears at all.
Crackdown... I think management was on crack, because I don't know how you screwed everything about the game up so miserably.
Quantum Break was a good new IP from EXCELLENT devs that you could have had a good relationship with, but had some mixed feelings on the TV show aspect (probably Microsoft's fad idea)... so what? Why did you leave that IP behind? Just make an improved sequel that's a fully a video game!
Sunset Overdrive... amazing game from another amazing developer, the IP just needed time to cook and maybe a good free demo slice.
I could go on, and on, and on... but Xbox has made, and continues to make, every bad, greedy decision possible that ends up being the same short sighted mistake that every ill-equiped corporation makes so that temporary management gets a bonus before they go on to rape the next company. How there isn't a protection against these idiots is beyond me.

A few thoughts: Mikami left Tango Gameworks. His 'genius' was the selling point of that studio. Arkane Austin was hollowed out by departures after being forced to make Redfall by their former overlords. The industry is entirely bloated and oversaturated. A firehose of myriad weekly game releases. Endless new game studios being announced. No one has the time and money to purchase and play all of the content, creating a high risk/high reward gamble for ALL studios (including those owned by Microsoft and Sony). The recent attrition is the 'right sizing' of the video games business in its totality.

not saying we need to be treated like children, just that you need to respect the creative process or that process will grind to halt.

The 'Ship of Theseus' argument doesn't really work for video game devs, as often it will only be a handful of people out of the team that actually make a company what you love. Just losing 5 or 6 people out of a team of 100 can completely crash a studio if the talent and vision is gone.
That said, it's the case for nearly all of the major studios today. The people that made the games people loved at Bioware, and Blizzard, and Arkane, etc, left. Some of them more than a decade ago. The studios have been coasting ever since.
