Karen S I’ve learned some new things! I now use a chop stick in my drill so I don’t need tape. When using a straw don’t wind too close to the ends. I put a large bead at the ends of the straw in the shuttle - the straw turns better.
Karen S sorry, I wasn’t very clear on that! No, I put a bead on either end of the straw in the shuttle. Without the bead sometimes the straw kind of binds against the shuttle as it turns. My beads have big enough holes to slide easily over the wire and they are just a bit bigger than the diameter of the straw. They are not glued - just loose. Wish I could just show you a picture!
There is a shop named handywomanshop.com that makes thin boat shuttles for rigid heedle looms. The shuttles are wood, handmade, reasonably priced and work very well with the rigid heedle looms. The shop also carries paper quills and plastic bobbins for the shuttles. Some of her shuttles are also double bobbin shuttles maybe even a 3 bobbin shuttle.
Thank you very much. The video is really helpful! I am thinking about using metal straws (and saw them to the right length). Do you think that would work?
I’m sure it would. I’ve also seen glass tubes used as bobbins. Paper straws work very well. I just had a bunch of plastic straws that I’m recycling. I will say if you are alternating a lot of different colors you are going to need multiple bobbins. I’m going to experiment with using hot glue to add a flange to my paper straws. I now use a chopstick in my drill for winding bobbins. It has slanted sides so the straw or bobbin stays in place, mostly, when I wind on without needing tape.
I like my drill because I can adjust the speed or stop immediately if I run into trouble. Also, it's easy to change the size of dowel rod for different size bobbins as needed. I am going to sand one of by dowels down so that it tapers at one end so that I can just use different size bobbins or straws on the same dowel. I have a cheap stand mixer that I don't think would work for this. Maybe yours would! I do have a regular crank drill that would work, but I'd need to rig up a way to hold the drill steady while I crank and wind. Or grow another hand! I still couldn't crank as fast as the electric drill winds. I have an old treadle sewing machine that I am thinking about turning into a spinning wheel, but it could just as easily become a bobbin winder. Or maybe both!
PLEASE make your own long-lasting paper Quills~ PLEASE do not promote plastic straws. They will wear out. PLEASE be part of SLOW CLOTH by includig tools that resonate with the process, your hands perform, with SLOW consumption. I have paper quills from the 60s. Thank you.
I’ve never used a boat shuttle & was looking for information on them. This helped me in many ways along with saving me some $$$! Thank you.

@@susancopas4911 Thanks so much! So are saying you put the bead on the chop stick over the straw?

Thanks for information 😘
Thanks for the good video
Where did you purchase your boat shuttles?
I do almost all my shopping via online sites. Often multiple sites will have the same item so I compare prices and shipping costs.
How about using a hand mixer?

A hand drill works.
