  • This is an instructional video on how to properly take apart, clean, and put back together the 1911 series of handguns.
Developed by Colt under the leadership and main efforts of John Browning, the Model 1911 pistol was adopted by the U.S. Army in the year of its name. The gun was built around Browning's newly-designed .45 ACP cartridge as per request of the War Department for a heavier-hitting round. Several years later, the Marine Corps also adopted the 1911, soon becoming the U.S. Military's standard-issue sidearm. The 1911 served in this role until the later 1980s when its replacement was selected; Beretta's M-9 9mm pistol. Even after the Beretta was adopted, elite U.S. Military units continued using the 1911. Even to this day, the USMC Special Forces (MARSOC) still officially uses the 1911 pistol as their standard-issue sidearm. Colt just recently picked up a new Marine Corps contract to make 1911s for MARSOC, making the 1911 a sidearm that has been in the hands of the U.S. war-fighter for 101 years (and counting). Various law enforcement departments and government agencies use the 1911 even to this day, such as the LAPD SWAT team using the Kimber TLE II. Many spin-offs and improved designs have come from the original design, and the gun and its variants have been and are still being used by agencies and military units all over the globe. Today, many manufacturers make the 1911 and the design in use today is virtually almost unchanged from that of the original.
    Taking it apart:
    1) Ensure the source of feed is removed from the gun (release the magazine)
    2) Lock the slide back and ensure the gun is completely unloaded
    3) Slowly and carefully release the slide to the forward position
    4) Put the weapon on safe
    5) It helps to place the weapon pointing upward, but push down on the recoil spring plunger
    6) CAREFUL -PARTS ARE UNDER PRESSURE
With the plunger depressed, slide the barrel bushing to the left to allow for the recoil spring plunger to escape being "trapped" in by the bushing
    7) Carefully ease the recoil spring plunger out of the slide and remove the recoil spring from the slide
    8) Rotate the barrel bushing now to the right, and then pull the bushing from the slide
    9) Now pull the slide back almost to full rear, aligning the slide stop with the take-down notch of the slide
    10) With the take-down notch and slide stop aligned, push the slide stop out of the frame from right to left
    11) With the slide stop removed, pull the slide and barrel forward and off the frame
    12) Remove the recoil spring base from under the barrel
    12) Ensure the barrel link of the barrel is turned downward and toward the muzzle, then pull the barrel forward and out of the slide
    Putting it back together:
    1) Insert the barrel into the slide from the muzzle end and into the breach end of the slide
    2) Lay the slide and barrel upside-down on the table and place the recoil spring base on the barrel towards the barrel link (ensuring barrel link is standing up)
    3) Push the closed-end of the recoil spring through the front end of the slide and fix it onto the recoil spring base
    4) Introduce the upside-down frame onto the rails of the slide, ensuring the recoil spring base, recoil spring, and barrel link are properly fit to the barrel with a snug fit
    5) Push in the frame firing pin safety device so it doesn't block or hit against the rear of the slide (80 Series 1911s only)
    6) Carefully align the barrel link with the holes in the frame for the slide stop
    7) Insert the slide stop into the frame and through the barrel link -test fit by pulling the slide back and forth to ensure proper placement of barrel link
    8) Align the slide at the take-down notch and CAREFULLY push down and inwards on the slide stop to "snap" it into the frame -avoid scratching the frame with the slide stop in the process
    9) Push the slide in the forward position, then put the weapon on safe
    10) Insert the barrel bushing into the slide, slightly canted to the right, then rotate the bushing to full left once secured in the slide
    11) CAREFUL -PARTS ARE UNDER PRESSURE
Place the recoil spring plunger onto the open end of the recoil spring and apply pressure
    12) Insert the recoil spring plunger into the slide, then carefully rotate the barrel bushing to the right until it clicks and "traps" the recoil spring plunger into the slide
    13) Take the weapon off safe and it's now put back together
    Particular Mentions:
You should never allow the slide of a 1911 to be released forward without carefully guiding it forward. The slide is meant to be released only with ammo in a magazine helping to cushion and slow the movement of the slide forward, and without a loaded magazine inserted in the gun, the slide has no cushioning and the internal parts can wear and break easily. Occasional and even frequent dry-firing does not hurt the gun at all, but as always, heavy dry-firing drills should be down with dummy rounds or Snap Caps.

slide drop w/o round damaging the firearm is a MYTH. the components of the firearm go through FAR MORE force when expansion after cartridge ignition occurs. furthermore, the slide is designed to cycle back and forth in DRY FIRE as this is a common military practice and the 1911 is a military developed firearm.

@@dragoneye6642 I actually changed my mind about this recently. I watched a video with Ken Hackathorn and Bill Wilson (founder and owner of Wilson Combat)talking about 1911s and they didn't have a good thing to say about empty chamber slide drops. They were talking more about tight, tuned guns but I'm guessing that if its not good for the $2000 Wilsons, Ed Browns and Cabots, its not good for the $500 Remingtons and RIAs either.

Bingo. It's the hammer hooks and sear engagement that get trashed over time if you relentlessly drop the slide on an empty gun. People are free to destroy their 1911 hammer/sear engagement at their own will, expensive lessons are the best to learn the hard way.

The blue rag looks like a surgical towel - the best for gun cleaning as it has minimal lint. These sterile towels are available (otherwise thrown away) once the surgical pack is opened in preparation for surgery and it gets canceled subsequently.

    there's a much better and faster way to dis/ass a 1911.
1 take the slide off the gun-it will be under spring tension like a glock-keep your fingers under the slide to keep the guide rod in place so it doesn't go flying
2 take the guide rod, recoil spring, and plug out
3 push the barrel towards the bushing
4 rotate bushing to remove from slide
5 remove bushing and barrel from the gun as 1 piece (i.e. leave the bushing half way down the barrel- this keeps the lockup between the contacting surface of the bushing and barrel tight)
    6 you're done. assemble from 6-1..
and dont be like the dude in the vid. you want to lube the contacting surfaces of the bushing and barrel.

I have a concept that if someone only owned or used 1911#but in various caliber, wouldn't that help to be more proficient with shooting in general simply bc they're all identical to hold? Use same textual attachments and holsters and may carriers. Which holster do you use? And other textual stuff for 1911..? And any other suggestions....
Also.. How much depression or travel should there grip safety be to engage during, it's too disengage the safety? Mine seems to be too short which makes me uncomfortable with it. Been thinking of shaving a bit down.
Trainings were that "clearing" the gun simply meant to determine what condition it is in, not unloading it.

What you keep calling the recoil spring plunger is correctly called the PLUG. It made my teeth grind every time you referred to it as the plunger. There is a Plunger tube and Plunger spring. Also a Slide Lock Plunger and a Safety Lock Plunger. Otherwise a very good video on disassembly, cleaning, oiling, and reassembling a 1911.

Idiot scratch?...well, shit happens,if you use the gun a lot it's going to get some scuffs and scratches.I wouldn't worry about it too much,You can always have it refinished or if it's stainless steel just buff/polish it out or maybe sand blast it.It's going to happen unless you never take it out to shoot and that's just no fun.Something to consider when you buy a gun you intend to actually use at the range a lot.If you go with a more basic finish it's easier to repair.

Very poor lightning. No mention of the need to wear safety glasses and gloves. You don't want your skin in contact with solvents and the residue. Not a very good video.

TheWeirdBlueDragon Yes, but a 1911 instruction video should use a real (that would be Colt) 1911. I know, there are many other makers of the Colt patent, but why use a copy, even if it is identical?

Probably because supply can't meet demand. Quality design and manufacture are what matter.

This is a joke video right? We are all supposed to take a shot each time he says basically. . right? First off, when you make a video, clean your hands. Second, know what the hell you are talking about. You are dangerous in your regurgitating of bad information.

disassembly is where the 1911 design really shows how outdated it is

    • @GeorgiaShootersGroup
      @GeorgiaShootersGroup 10 лет назад +5

I'm assuming you have never broken down countless other modern pistols that are more complicated. The Sig 1911 for example can be completely stripped and reassembled in a flash. Think again... a 1911 is simple if you train with it.

    • @thomasherbert5790

The 1911 will never be outdated. Only you will pass and no one will give a shit

For an instructional vid, you left out the most important step in the process......After you take the clunker apart, clean it, preen it and diaper it, and put it back together, take it to an auto wrecking yard with one of those big-ass shredders that turn old cars into confetti and throw the worthless piece of $%iT in it

First error: The bushing is NOT rotated left ... it's rotated clockwise as viewed from the muzzle. Clockwise is also called "right" rotation. He calls this a "gun" ... and that's as far as I got with this bozo.
