Etihad Airways (Arabic: شَرِكَة ٱلْاِتِّحَاد لِلطَّيْرَان, romanized: sharikat al-ittiḥād li-ṭ-ṭayarān) is one of two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates, alongside Emirates. Its head office is in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, near Zayed International Airport. The airline commenced operations in November 2003, and is the second-largest airline in the UAE after Emirates.[5] The name Etihad is the Arabic word for 'Union'.
The airline operates more than 1,000 flights per week to over 120 passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, with a fleet of 85 Airbus and Boeing aircraft as of January 2024. Its main base is at Zayed International Airport.[6]
In addition to its main activity of passenger transportation, Etihad also operates Etihad Holidays and Etihad Cargo.[5] The airline established its airline alliance, Etihad Airways Partners, in October 2015. It ceased operations in 2018 after several of its members fell into financial difficulties.[7][8] Etihad held minority investments in the participating airlines, and previously had a stake in Virgin Australia until its insolvency in April 2020 with no return on investment.
Hamad International Airport
Hamad International Airport (IATA: DOH, ICAO: OTHH) (Arabic: مطار حمد الدولي, Maṭār Ḥamad al-Duwalī) is an international airport in Qatar, and the home of the national flag carrier airline, Qatar Airways. Located east of the capital, Doha, it replaced the nearby Doha International Airport as Qatar's principal and main national airport. Hamad International Airport is currently rated as the "World's Best Airport" by Skytrax, and now holds "Best Airport in the Middle East" for the 10th time.[2][peacock prose]
Formerly known as New Doha International Airport (NDIA), Hamad International Airport was originally scheduled to open in 2008, but after a series of costly delays, the airport finally opened six years overdue on 30 April 2014 with a ceremonial Qatar Airways flight landing from nearby Doha International. Qatar Airways and all other carriers formally relocated to the new airport on 27 May 2014.[3] The airport is named after the previous Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
