My name is Kaiya Pelletier and I am documenting my metal journey as I discover and listen to metal music for the first time ever. I'm in my mid 20's and I've been a singer songwriter and performer for over 10 years. Currently I live in Stillwater, Oklahoma and I am in the process of recording my 4th album. I love Mexican food, collecting Stephen King novels, collecting CD's and cassettes and my favorite movies are tied between Jurassic Park and Alien.

Hard disagree on Terrasite. While it wasn't my favorite Cattle Decap album nor my AotY, it definitely belongs towards the top of the list. Likely in second behind Tomb Mold's The Enduring Spirit
starts by criticizing Cattle Decap for being "Death Core" and ends by praising Spirit Box, very coherent...
I think she is with that sort of death metal crowd who love calling everything they don't like deathcore. I have heard people call bands deathcore and it was bands like Cattle Decapitation, Dying Fetus, The Black Dahlia Murder, Archspire etc. Some elitists don't like these types of bands.
However she doesn't have a problem with a metalcore band and I think there are better metalcore bands than Spiritbox. I don't care for the Grammys and their metal section has always been poor. Spiritbox are very popular so no surprise they got nominated.
However I looked at the channel and it seems she does like dwathcore with a title saying Shadow of Intent is beautiful and I know they're deathcore. Maybe it's some of her fans who were hating that she didn't want to piss them off.
I am glad I don't feel the need to impress people and just listen to what I like. I also listen to other genres outside of metal.
I am going to criticise her on the Incantation part too as she said it was too slow but liked the first album and that too has slow parts. Incantation has always been consistent with that.
@@SorceressWitch did you listen to the spiritbox ep? i disliked their album but was impressed by the ep. much better riffs and melodies.
Fully expected to see us on the worst list when this notification popped up.... Phew.

I don't think "too slow paced" is even a good criticism of Incantation.
Incantation didn't recently do slower songs, they have been doing this since the beginning. You said you listened to the first album which is Onward to Golgotha. The song Blasphemous Creation starts off fast but then slows down. Rotting Spiritual Embodiment isn't slow but there is some slow parts in it. Christening the Afterbirth is a slow song.
Incantation second album has a lot of doomy parts too. It's actually slower than the first. If you listen to more of their stuff, you will notice that they're actually quite consistent. So the new album is just more Incantation. Those complaining about speed don't sound like Incantation fans to begin with.
I actually like the slow stuff and find it pathetic when guys whine about slow stuff. You can listen to something slower for a few minutes.
I enjoyed the new album and it still sounds like old school death metal. Though i wouldn't rate it compared to past albums and think it should be judged on its own merits.
I had to say this because i just don't see how "too slow paced" is a valid criticism of a band that is known for doing slower songs. The new album still has faster songs on it too. They always mix the pace on their albums. If you like Incantation then slow stuff shouldn't bother you. As the old school stuff has many slower paced songs. Just check out the second album Mortal Throne of Nazarene. I like the song The Ibex Moon which is very much a death-doom song.
I agree - terrasite was a letdown for me.
I loved death-atlus .
You got it right on the money dying fetus is my album of the year nothing else really came close those head smashing grooves and breakdowns they just beat you into submission.
I don't know if they're your jam but my favorite albums of the year were Black Medium Current by Dodheimsgard (maybe one of my favorite albums ever), and Seven Crown & Seven Seals by Sulphur Aeon.
Hope you have a great 2024!
Been listening to Sulphur Aeon for a few years now. Sadly, I did not know they had released an album this year until a few days ago. Its good to see it getting good reviews. I cant wait to check it out!
@@NoOneYaKnow666 I just learned about them this year and their whole catalog is insane. Seems like there's a lot of really amazing bands from that particular region of Germany, too.
@@Stand_By_For_Mind_Control I dont even remember how I caught wind of this band, but I remember seeing the 'Swallowed by the Oceans Tide' cover and just thinking how awesome it was. Then I heard a clip and been a fan since. Probably since around '14. Such cool Chthulu-ian atmosphere!
Agreed regarding Terrasite. There are some awesome moments on the record and I love how they do a lot of the new guitar effects/synths, but most of the record feels like the band is spinning their wheels a bit, locked in to Anthropocene type sound. My favourite of their is Monolith, it has that perfect balance of great, hard hitting production and writing yet also feels like it might fly off the tracks at any given moment.
Dying fetus was absolut lit and my fav with Canabel Corps
The cattle decap album was so memorable for me. Like bro i cant get it out of my head
I hope you checked out Judgement Days from Lovebites and The Other One by Babymetal
As usual, whenever I create a "best of" annual year-end list I leave a bunch of good stuff off and 2023 was no exception at all. I probably could have made this list ten times longer and boring af to read, but that said, barring a complete miracle for 2023's last month, I have what would be the 25 albums that I enjoyed the most this year:
1. Lovebites -- Judgement Day
2. Delain -- Dark Waters
3. Hellripper -- Warlocks Grim and Withered Hags
4. Insomnium -- Anno 1696
5. Overkill -- Scorched
6. Redshift -- Laws of Entropy
7. Xandria -- The Wonders Still Awaiting
8. Perc3ption -- Art In Extreme Situations
9. Fierce Justice -- Fireborn
10. Acid King -- Beyond Vision
11. Enforced -- War Remains
12. Wytch Hazel -- IV: Sacrament
13. Restless Spirit -- Afterimage
14. Kalmah -- S/T
15. Ne Obliviscaris -- Exul
16. Echoes of Bronze -- Ilium
17. Night Legion -- Fight or Fall
18. Enchantya -- Cerberus
19. Majesties -- Vast Reaches Unclaimed
20. Midnight Vice -- S/T (the riffs on this are KILLER)
21. Excalion -- Once Upon A Time
22. Naitaka -- Emergence
23. Blood Ceremony -- The Old Ways Remain
24. Soen -- Memorial
25. Iron Savior -- Firestar
Just missed: Dhaliax -- Doomed , Obituary -- Dying of Everything, Blackbraid -- Blackbraid II, Cruachan -- The Living and the Dead, Enslaved -- Heimdal, Blackbriar -- A Dark Euphony, Moonlight Sorcery -- Horned Lord of the Thorned Castle, Akilla -- The Gods Have Spoken, Omnium Gatherum -- Slasher, Powerwolf-- Interludium, Orbit Culture -- Descent, Green Lung -- This Heathen Land, Twilight Force -- At the Heart of Wintervale, Crypta -- Shades of Sorrow, Strike -- Break the Chains, Frozen Crown -- Call of the North and Exmortus -- Necrophony.
Even with 25, I left off a LOT of good stuff.

#staymetal
Love the nod to Crypta! I am excited to see them in February when they come to Ohio!
I’m still deciding which is better Dying Fetus or Crypta
Dying fetus for me was best brutal death metal album of the year
great takes on all these records. my top 10 were Mutoid Man- Mutants, Kvelertak- Endling, Green Lung- This Heathen Land, Daydream Flights- The Garnet Bracelet, Venomous Concept- The Goodship Lollypop, '68- Yes, And..., Big Muff 68- Swing Metal, Demoke- Smiles, Parables and Fables, Oozing Wound- We Cater To Cowards, and The Lions Daughter- Bath House
That '68 album was so underrated
I see you with the JDawg shirt 👌🏻
Time stamps next time please
Agreed about Terrasite. Also getting into make them beg too. As a side note please please listen to my current fave band. Hath. Every song of there latest album is killer.
I swear I'll never understand what people see/hear in Dying Fetus. Its so boring run of the mill death metal. Nothing gets me less exited than hearing that theres a new record of them.
Interesting and varied list! Dying Fetus did not make it to my Top 10, but still a great record.
My Top 10 of 2023 is:
…and Oceans - As in Gardens, So in Tombs
Sühnopfer - Nous sommes d'hier
Sulphur Aeon - Seven Crowns and Seven Seals
Bloedmaan - Castle inside the Eclipse
ILDSKÆR - Blod & Jern
Moonlight Sorcery - Horned Lord Of The Thorned Castle
Ahab - The Coral Tombs
Roadwolf - Midnight Lightning
Auld Ridge - Folklore From Further Out
+1476+ - In Exile
Honorable mentions:
Nithing, Wormhole, Dying Fetus, The Night Eternal, Dryad, Böotes Void
Always blows my mind that people can come up with a number one favorite album for the year. Hell, I can barely cut my list down to a top 50, let alone pick just one single best album. There's just way too many killer bands floating around in the underground
Disappointments though...that's easy:
Tomb Mold - The Enduring Spirit...not super surprising, given the direction of their recent EP, but band went way too hard into tech/prog territory and basically ditched all that nasty, cavernous atmosphere.
Sulphur Aeon - Seven Crowns and Seven Seals...I knew everyone was going to go stupid in the head for this album, but to me it just leans too hard into Septic Flesh territory. Swallowed by the Ocean's Tide is mandatory, but this new one it just trying to be too operatic...too "epic"...and it just doesn't have the same level of aggression.
This was a great list! If you would like to hear my list, go to the channel called The Great Metal Debate and check out our video called Episode 77. We mention a lot of underground stuff.
so I arrived in the metal noob part of youtube apparently. I stopped watching when she said Cattle Decap was deathcore.
Worst album of the year should go to "72 Seasons"
You are so right in my opinion. That Dying Fetus record is next level. I was so blown away.
I saw Blood Star in 2021 opening for Unto Others. They definitely fit the bill.
Human Jerky and To Serve Man are Cattle Decapitation's 2 masterpieces in my opinion
For me the best album is Exul by Ne Obliviscaris
Wtf on Terrasite
Will catch up on this bliss :)
❤
I agree regarding Cattle Decapitation. I can't stand that record. Terrible vocals, over processed drums and wimpy choruses. So glad to finally hear someone else say they didn't like it.
Nice video Kaiya! Keep up the good work! Can’t wait for new content this year 🤩
Best ? They just do the same thing the whole album
You are getting more and more beautiful. Thanks Kaiya
