How in the world do people afford to live in anything even moderately nice? I mean, NYC isnt worth losing so much money to a landlord like this. My opinion, if ypu pay more than $2000 a month in rent its crazy! Great job as always, Cash. Watch everyday even tho I have never thought about moving to a big city. ❤
These are people with money who are living in these places. If you can find a good job you can afford to live in the the city. Not everything is this widely unaffordable. I am from Long island which is near queens and I can find cheaper and nicer places to live in queens. They also pay more in the city than along Island. I used to think everything was this ridiculously expensive until I looked into moving to queens.
Let say, someone who is earning $300000 a year, divided by 12 months. That mean monthly income $25000. So for that person, a $5000 is not even a 30 percent of the income. I know, you will say who does earn this kind of money? Guess what, there are at least 40 (give or take) percent of the population in each country do earn this kind of money. For me a rent that goes beyond $1000, is tooo high. If you can pay this amount, I guess buying a house or apartment might be a better option.

I’ve been scanning old family photos, and I found one sent to my great grandfather from his brother George in Yonkers in 1920. It was of the three-flat house that he owned. His family lived in the first floor unit, and they rented the other two floors for $75 each, according to George’s note on the back of the picture. I am guessing they were probably two- or three-bedroom units, just because George and his wife had four children and I couldn’t imagine them in a one-bedroom with that many kids.
In the old tenements (before housing reform) you could have families of 10 (or more) living in a single room thanks to stacked beds, and co-sleeping the children. (My grandmother was the first of 14 kids! (She out lived all of them except her youngest sister (all of their brothers died in WWII.))
I just looked up George’s 1920 census record, and the other two units had a married couple with no kids in one and a couple with a 3 year old and a mother-in-law in the other. So, I have no idea how big the units were! (The second couple’s ages were weird on that 1920 record, so I looked for their 1930 census record, and circumstances had definitely changed!
