My 4 favorite Hall of fame bass guitar players of all time Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham, the late Mark Adams of Slave & the late Louis Johnson of the Brothers Johnson RIP.
He was fingering the notes from off the neck(as you can see on this video; I think the fact that he had long arms[he was quite tall]allowed for him to play the bass in that manner), as well as below the neck-which is where everybody else fingered the notes on the bass; saw him in 1980, and was blown away-so was everyone else-by what he did on the bass guitar! We had never seen anyone play the bass like that! He was truly unique and a genius on the bass guitar-there'll never be another like him! 12-12-24.
@@edennard1 True. But my Ernie Ball has the original 2band before the 3 came out. I would kill to have the “original” musicaman stingray. My bass came out in 88’ and it’s not going NOWHERE!! Love the Stingray!! Louis made that baby ZZZING!!!🤨🎶👍🏾
I had the StingRay and the Sabre…and I’ve yet to hear any Bass that had the sound of the Original Leo Fender MusicMan Sabre… not even the Sabre that ErnieBall made sounded like the Leo Fender model…
Daaaammmmn..... It always gives be goosebumps & utter pleasure to see the rythm section locked in the pocket & serving the song or just getting it on & going for it & i'd say this one of the best i've seen of the late great Louis Johnson & i want to thank the uploader & RUclips for giving the uploader a platform to post this on as where i come from we didn't get to see these amazing musician's... Sure we could buy their albums when possible & enjoy their collaborative work with other singer's & musician's & its just the last 5 years of buying an android phone that i've come across fans of these great musician's posting these video's... RIP Louis Johnson RIP Bernard Edwards RIP Tony Thompson RIP Mick Karn The world has been so much brighter while you were in it & I Thank You... .....
What an amazing musician was Louis. That solo where he keeps playing the same note over and over again in just slightly different rhythms. It's something Sonny Rollins, the genius jazz sax player would do. I think it was a way these brilliant real time composers strip away melody completely, to let the heart of the music stand alone. The rhythm. Brilliant minds these great music folks have. I hope he is at peace and funkying the heavens for the Lord. Funk Forever.
It brings me absolute joy everytime I catch footage of my mentor Louis Johnson Funkin' Out! And it was truly a blessing that I got the opportunity to meet him in person. I'm laughing because I subconsciously bought two basses like his. One like the one he's playing in the video; a all natural wood colored Music Man bass which I call "Butta" and one like he used on the "Blam" album. A sunburst colored Music Man bass which I call "Giblets & Gravy" (my working bass). Thank you Louis for all the excitement and for putting your stamp on "Funk Bass" playing forever! No one but no one played "Funk Bass" with such intensity and fervor like him! God Bless Tha Bass Playin' Man! R.I.P. Louis "Thunder Thumbs" Johnson.
what's the name of this drummer that we also see in the Stomp video, I'm a drummer and he's a killer, this bass drum duo is very good, I can't find his name
@@Conn88 I think this s Richard Diamond on drums. He was the ‘road’ drummer at this time. I don’t think J.R. Played live with the Brthers although he is on some Quincy Jones footage with Louis.
Louis please don't hurt them, I know there's a lot of bad ass bass men in the world, I've been in two bands over 3 Decades, but Louis Thunder Thumbs is the King of the bad ass Bass players, R.I.P. he's miss, but will never be forgotten 👍🙏
Louis was a deeply funky musician and an incredible showman (love his James Brown-esque "collapse" at the end of his solo 😊). I was obsessed with the Blam album -- it's one of the main reasons I play bass. Thanks for your incredible music, Thunder Thumbs. ♥️👍🎸
Is Larry graham still alive!? Lot of good bassist out there! But my favorite is Louis Johnson!! Don’t forget Bernard Edwards from Chic, Terry Lewis from the Time, Mark King , the Han solar(from the group Slave)…. Prob misspelled?! EW& Fire(Maurice White’s brother) Bootsy Collins/bootzilla ! Stanley Clarke, Tyrone Brunson
It actually seems like there are some flatwounds strings on the Stingray...and the tone is killing all the time!!! Louis J. the one & only ...R.I.P. Bro.
Louis did use flats on his Ray. The Pre Ernie Ball Rays were pretty bright and harsh with rounds, flats tamed the beast. Bernard Edwards used flats as well on his Stingray.
Louis Johnson is the baddest bass player ever ,then comes Stanley Clarke, William " Bootsy" Collins, Larry Graham and last but not least Mark Addams of the Group " Slave".
If he was playin air bass ,I'd look at his right hand and ask him what the H is that supposed 2 B..if he told me air bass I'd think he's crazy......Sure enough, He Was Right 🤣🤣,,Amen!!!

He passed away too young at age 60
I agree; I rank him the Bass G.O.A.T.
I got my Stingray bass because of him! Still have it, too! May he R.I.P!
