I was a Lowrance Pro-Staffer for years. You did a great job explaining the Eagle Eye 9. I think it will be a perfect choice for Kayak and Small boat owners who have limited space and are budget oriented. I fish from a Kayak quite often and have found Side Scan to be a VERY powerful tool, for those that can forfeit SS and are looking to see or want a reduced coverage FFS, this will be a great introduction.
I’ve had allot of fun using this unit ice fishing. I set up the transducer outside the tent at maximum distance facing inward toward the the holes inside the tent. I love it!
I wasn't really interested in the whole active target / live scope thing mostly because of cost but also I see so many anglers that just NEVER look up. They're just staring at the screen the whole time and I don't want to be one of those people. To me part of the whole fishing experience is enjoying the scenery and nature while trying to figure out a pattern, whether bass, crappie or whatever. That said, I can see getting this because it offers so much at a great price point. I personally rarely use side scan but I do use 2d and downscale. The new screen is a great bonus in itself, add in the focused beams with the same tech as active target, I think this is a real winner. Way to go Lowrance!
❤❤can you please do a video on the new accuphy ffs that was at I cast. You can google to get the info. It will use your personal I pad or phone and all you buy is the transducer. Will release about the same time as the eagle 9.
I think this is great. alot of people will buy this. For the average guy this has everything you need in 1 package, for alot less than the at2 + graph package. 1 transducer, 1 screen, no extra powerbox, and it does everything you need, with less wiring, drilling and headaches...hopefully. Now think about transferring the ducer to a hole in the ice if it gets that cold where you are and you have a year round package for $999. Yes, it's not as good as At2 but the price point is where they will win in my opinion.
This could be great for ice fishing as the normal shuttles can weigh a lot and get pretty cumbersome if a guy wants to hole hop. I'll reserve my judgement until we see some actual use of the unit.
I am in the wait and see camp on this one. I want to watch some non-sponsored reviews after it hits the market. But I do like the idea of adding it to my boat. Not a technology I anticipated leaning on, but it would make it nice to have for the right price.
What about getting 2 of these units one off front and one off back. On the front, if you simply turn trolling motor to sides wouldn't you effectively have a side scan with the live view?
I think this is the perfect thing for netting bait. Doesn’t have to be super clear but the narrow cone will put you right on them. Almost like it was made for cat fishermen looking for a live sonar for bait!!
In the past 5 years ive gone from a 4 inch sonar, to a 7inch with sidescan, to a 10inch with the lot. For me personally, live sonar is just another tool that supplements traditional/downscan/sidescan. If i were starting out again this product would have a lot of appeal, but if i had to start afresh, with my style of fishing, i really wouldn’t want to give up the sidescan for a small window of live sonar.
Thank you for the explanation of how it works. I have a 14' aluminium boat, mostly freshwater lakes and rivers - currently just have a basic 4" Hook sonar, it's good enough to give me depth and temp but not much more! Was looking at the systems as I keep getting told that live sonar is the go, but the cost was prohibitive, as well as understanding what is actually required, multiple boxes, different transducers etc. For someone who is just looking to upgrade from very basic sonar, and doesn't have a great understanding of the importance of side-scan vs live sonar, what are the trade-offs between each? If I've never had side scan but got this unit would I never know what I was missing out on?
Key Differences: Purpose : Side Scan: Primarily for scanning large areas to locate structures and fish. Live Sonar: Designed for precise, real-time tracking of fish and how they interact with your bait. View: Side Scan: Provides a broader, side-facing view (usually 60-100 feet on each side of the boat). Live Sonar: Typically forward-facing, showing real-time imagery of what's ahead or below you, with a focus on movement. Real-Time Action: Side Scan: Doesn’t show fish in motion or how they’re reacting to your lure. Live Sonar: Shows fish movement and your lure's interaction with them in real-time. Best Use: Side Scan: Ideal for covering large areas or exploring unfamiliar waters for structure and fish location. Live Sonar: Best for targeted fishing, precise bait presentation, and observing how fish react to your lure. In Conclusion: Side Scan Sonar is best for mapping and covering large areas of water, helping you locate fish and underwater structures. Live Sonar is perfect for interactive fishing, providing real-time visuals of fish behavior and your lure's effectiveness.
We got along just fine with Garmin PS10 it was hailed be many “Pro” fisherman as the greatest ! Didn’t need a black box it was amazing for ice fishing 👍👍
Bought one! Pr-ordered it. The actual degree of coverage is not that big a deal to me, as I wanted FFS. I have another Garmin unit on the bow that will do everything else that I need. This unit will indeed be a game changer for the average angler! I will predict that they sell a ton of these units. You are correct that the arrays are greatly reduced, but the difference in price to upgrade my Garmin units is significant. I'm going to love adding this to my boat.
Yeah I’ve never used any kind of live sonar like live scope so I wouldn’t know what I was missing out on😂. This would be great. Spending 3k-$4k on a system is just not in the stars for me.
1st off it wouldn't make sense to put it on a $400 kayak. 2nd when I do upgrade the kayak, I rather invest in motor or trailer/tow package. 3rd off a will be thrilled with just a side scan. Lowrance wants you to buy this $999 eagle eye and pair it up with a traditional/ side scan finder. They made it smaller and cheaper due there's a market for FFS on kayaks. My new fish finder, mostly for next spring is: The Mag Draft 6: $17.99
It would make sense for someone like me who fishes out of a cheap kayak AND a small cheap aluminum bass boat. I could rig it to where it’s easily movable between the 2. Put the transducer on a DIY rotating pole and use a separate small battery.
@JonBecker81 I have access to a 16' Sea Nymph w/ 9.9 Johnson and trolling motor. It's kinda fun. But I'll rather do kayak fishing , but I can't figure it out why.
@@lowlifeangler I love kayak fishing too. I use it for fishing small water and back water creaks where the boat can’t go. I have a 40 hp bass tracker that I’ll take out to bigger water. There’s maybe 5 big lakes all within an hour and half radius from me. Man, I just like being on the water. It doesn’t really matter which boat I’m in.
I’ve had ffs for about a year and seldom use it. I am a confesses bank beater and ffs doesn’t help. Still trying to learn how to read it in deeper water but every time I try, the banks call me back.
Thank you for the honest & straightforward review. I’m still not pulling the trigger until I see what Garmin & Humminbird’s response will be and more than likely there will be one. I’ve witnessed this over the last couple of years in the high dollar air rifle market and it’s been a win for the consumers who want in the game but the cost has kept them from diving straight in the deep end.
I think it's great. I'm 75 yrs old and have down graded to a 2 person Pelican Bass Raider. I couldn't see spending $3000 on a unit to put on an $800 plastic boat. This is a Game changer in my opinion.
I am a 70 yo kayaker. I leisurely pedal my Outback while inshore saltwater fishing. I do use my Lowrance FF to tell me if I passed over some fish, side scan to help read along docks and shoreline and charts to fish drop offs. I have all the rods and reels, my yak and accessories I need and I enjoy my day. I do not see myself “upgrading”. I do have 1 accessory that you have not mentioned, a fish caller. I can insert a small one on my fishing line or if anchored I can use a larger one. It’s a chum bucket or a chum prescription vile. Fish do need to be in the area and you can attract small sharks that can be fun to catch.
I'm wanting to get a forward facing sonar, but, but I don't want to spend $3000 on something I can only use 10-12 times a month, Hey this may be something I'm willing to try, when I find a video of someone actually using it I'll probably make my decision then. Thanks for the info, good video Brother
Gonna wait for some real angler testing on the actual unit...I love side scan so that is a turn off but should be able to run multiple units...just wondering about interference....the coverage is great for kayak fishing!
This would be perfect for me I could switch it between my cheap kayak and my cheap bass tracker. Make a DIY mounting pole that clamps on to the side of the boat/kayak and a separate small battery that stays with the unit. I’ve never used any kind of fancy, expensive live scope so I wouldn’t know what I was missing out on as far as the angles go.
Even with a smaller focus for live, you still get a 9" unit with down scan that has a transducer mounted to tour trolling motor. For your average joe it seems like a smokin deal in todays age
Sounds nice, but I'm the "Wait 'N See" kind of guy! Already have a 7" SC Lowrence on my little 'Yak, a Garmin 93 UHD on my "middle" 'Yak, and am in the market for a FFS unit for the Titan-X 12.5 (the Garmin I'm looking at is over $2,400 though, and that's more than I paid for the motor/battery unit...!) Lol... Not fishing in any tourneys this year, do I guess I'll "Bide my Time", and see how they "FARE" on the open market. Thanks for the review.
My plan is to buy it. I have always said I wasn't going to have forward facing sonar on my boat that I decided for this price point I'm going to try it out. More as an experiment than anything else I'm just curious to see if a guy at my level can you use it to catch fish. I've been fishing for 15 years bass fishing only and I fished tournaments I'm kind of old school. And I thought you know for this price point I'll give it a shot.
I just ordered my Active Target bundle and the day it was delivered I all of a sudden hear about this new set up for only $999. But looking at he difference I am glad I got what I got. I also would miss having scout mode which isn't available with the eagle eye. I do suspect this may really heat things up in the market if it is successful the other makers will also compete for this lower end market. So next year I think you will see units with more offered at a comparable price point.
@@SKARFishin ? Not sure what you mean. I just bought Active Target (1) but it has scout mode. Maybe i am missing what you mean. I would have loved to get AT 2 but I had to be mindful of the cash, and I figure AT is still better than no AT. No you have me wondering, I have mad respect for your abilities so I am wondering what I missed. lol
@@SammysBaits you can use it without two but I find it useless, and I’m not spending the money for two. I believe you get 180 degrees with one, and 360 with two. I have some stuff coming out on it since I have two GoPros to use now so they may be helpful. Let me know if you end up needing help setting it up. It can be fickle with transducer angle. You won’t use scout mode much but you will love the FFS. Welcome to the dark side lol
Definitely understand the difference thanks to this video! Would you recommend this though as a good beginner graph? I currently have the hummingbird helix 5. Thanks!
I think for the skinny water fisherman who is throwing at structure this unit is great a find you can use the forward-facing sonar and point it to where you are casting. The narrow beam allows you to focus in a more defined way. I have seen this used fishing oyster beds, kelp beads, and Mango with success is it as good as the Garmin NO because of the reduced arch you are seeing this will cause you to point the transducer more often it 110% has its place especially in skinny or narrow water it has become a truly affordable high tech piece of equipment for the people on a budget like myself. Two thumbs up.
I run an elite fs with active target 2. In less than 5 ft of water, live sonar is useless. At 10ft - 30 ft is where live sonar is best. I'd like to see some views of the eagle eye compared to active target 2. If you can mount the transducer of the eagle eye on a pole and focus on a tree a few feet in front of the boat this would be an inexpensive livesonar setup for a crappie fisherman.
I have the eagle eye 9 It sucks you can't see your lure in the water or any fish any further than 30 ft and I have fished it in stained water in Clearwater. I do not recommend it to anybody just spend the extra money if you want to have livescope
I'm torn on FFS. I don't really feel it's sporting, and while this price point would tempt me, I'd rather upgrade my kayak with the money. I'm not a great fisherman, some days I'm probably not even a good fisherman, and i don't know if I'd want to get better on crutches. I've caught big bass, but I'd like to be way more consistent before I get into live scopes. A simple garmin striker 4 on my kayak for now.
I purchased this unit and you can't see much of anything until it gets about 30 ft from the boat according to the graph. But in reality when the graph says the fish are 30 ft away they're really only 10 ft away I don't know if this is a flaw on the unit I have or if it sucks or I just don't have it set up correctly but the amount they give you you can't adjust any up or down angle or anything on the transducer but everything looks pretty straight so my guess is it's just a weak transducer. Another thing is you can't see your lure until it gets about 30 ft from the boat according to the graft but in reality when the graph says my lure 30 ft out it's really only about 10 ft. So unless I've done something wrong which I can't see that I have I would not recommend this to anybody just go out and spend the $3,500 and get a real live scope
@wendellfishing okay update on the eagle eye 9 I made an adjustment on the transducer and it's 100% better I can see fish better and as soon as I figured it out I found a group of fish and was able to catch one within 30 minutes. But then I had to go to my brothers and it was getting dark.
@@chrisv.8667 What was your adjustment you did? I'm thinking of getting one of these because I want some FFS and down live, but I want a really light weight unit for my aging back that hates the thought of a 25-30 lb Garmin to lug around on the ice and foot and sled hauling that much weight.
I think it's fine for someone who is on a budget and has never used one before. I have Garmin live view, no way I can go backwards from there. The proof will be in the pudding, let's see how it performs.
If what people say about using FFS is true, and how they “OnLy UsE It tO fInD OffSHoRe stRuCtuRe and wEeDLinEs” then the single beams should be fine right? Very cool concept but if I’m spending a grand I’m going to spend 500 more and get the hummingbird helix 9 Si+.
@@wendellfishing I actually have a Humminbird Helix 12 and Mega Live. The Mega Live works for some people but isn't working so good for me. Lot of money invested in all that.
I think your crazy, this is a game changer. The wekemd guy that wants to dabble in FFs, sold. Bass hammer that likes to frog, bang docks and then wa.nys to dabble in FFs, sold. Crappie dude that wants to eat, sold. All can up this on their boat for under 1k.
Problem with the LVS12 is that it's only compatible with the Echomap and GPSMAP. People who can afford those units aren't going to get a budget transducer when they might as well get the LVS32 or LVS34 if they are smart. The Eagle Eye 9 is a much cheaper head unit which when you look at the whole package, it's a much better deal. I'm not getting it myself but this far more accessible for casual anglers.
Not a fan of lowrance personally. And the price point isn’t that wonderful honestly. My first livescope setup was $1600 for 7” Garmin and lvs32. Buying used you can get setup with a good starter livescope bundle for 11-1200. But im a huge fan of this because maybe it’s the push the other manufacturers need to expand their arsenal.
Here’s my situation: I LOVE FFS!!! My buddy’s got it on his boat and it’s great technology. However, as a $450 kayak guy, it doesn’t make sense to buy that unit for $999. If I was going to spend $999, i’d get a used setup for $999 with active target 2 and a decent lil screen. Also, I’m 14 years old, so electronics on a kayak is just really not in the play books yet.
Lowrance cant even compare to garmin 🤣 I got so many buddies that ran garmin for years and got new boats with lowrance active target, lets just say active target was quickly removed and livescope installed….
Same here, just know the water your fishing and it’s usually good, but these days tournament fishing puts the pressure on catching the biggest in the least amount of time.

Plan to buy the Eagle eye 9 to help me target crappie.
Right on!
im getting 1 only thing i'll miss is no sidescan
Great video my dude. I think this is something I’d definitely buy.
Right on! I heard it comes out around Black Friday!
I might get it I'll want till next year to see what up
Down, side and 2d is all I'm interested in. They are all over $1000 bucks (9" and up). Every brand. Grrrr
Yeah... it's wild
Definitely understand the difference thanks to this video! Would you recommend this though as a good beginner graph? I currently have the hummingbird helix 5. Thanks!
It is the only "beginner" FFS out there right now. I am sure others will come to market with them
I think for the skinny water fisherman who is throwing at structure this unit is great a find you can use the forward-facing sonar and point it to where you are casting.
I have the eagle eye 9
It sucks you can't see your lure in the water or any fish any further than 30 ft and I have fished it in stained water in Clearwater.
Interesting for sure. thanks for your feedback
@wendellfishing okay update on the eagle eye 9
I made an adjustment on the transducer and it's 100% better I can see fish better and as soon as I figured it out I found a group of fish and was able to catch one within 30 minutes. But then I had to go to my brothers and it was getting dark.
@@chrisv.8667 Niiiice!
Cant wait to see myself
I’ve wanted FFS but it was just out of my budget and I could not justify spending that amount of money. This on the other hand seems worth it to me.
Right on!
Would this finder be great if you are just using a kayak and fishing primarily trout?
Yup
seems to be the perfect option for Kayak fisherman.
I have active target 2 haven’t bought a graph to go with. What do you recommend
I run garmins so I am not much help here
I would suggest a HDS Pro, in the biggest screen you can afford.
Does anyone know what the exact gimbal bracket it comes with?
It’s the 9 inch hook 2 gimbal bracket
I’d love to have one but should you get this before a motor ? I’m this then first then a motor.
Personal to the angler.. but I def bought a motor first
@@wendellfishing it sure is but they are both great additions. What’s your opinion on a motor bow or stern ?
@@nelhead4807 I hate anything in front of where I cast. Stern all day for me
Is this something good for ice fishing. I am undecided what sonar to get a good vexilar is 700 should I go flasher or spend the money on the eagle eye
I can see how this would be great for ice fishing.. and kayak fishing
@wendellfishing you helped me make my decision up
Would this be good for someone that only fishes hardwater?
I believe this would be excellent for that
I am really gunna be getting the active 2, just need to find someone to install it
Right on
Install it yourself
If what people say about using FFS is true, and how they “OnLy UsE It tO fInD OffSHoRe stRuCtuRe and wEeDLinEs” then the single beams should be fine right? Very cool concept but if I’m spending a grand I’m going to spend 500 more and get the hummingbird helix 9 Si+.
Right on
That’s some good intel. I thought it was too good to be true!
I think it is still good…. To be determined on the visibility angles but still solid tech at an affordable price which is the key. Thanks boss
For an occassional angler I thought the Eagle 9 sounds good. It doesn't make sense to spend $4,000 for the high end stuff and hardly ever go out.
Makes sense to me
@@wendellfishing I actually have a Humminbird Helix 12 and Mega Live.
Also for an ice guy that's 58 yrs old and doesn't want to lug around a 25-30 lb Garmin on foot and in a sled enjoying back country lakes.
Lowrance is so far behind Garmin. Garmin came out with the LVS 12 in 2019. This is what lowrance is selling now. 5 years later.
Most of my fishing is in the dark spot. 😆
:)
So Turn it down
My ffs stands for
Forward facing senko
That’s how I find fish😂
I can get behind that
Dam I just returned it after watching this without even buying it yet 😂
lol
Anyone use this for ice fishing??
Touch screen?
Not sure TBH
Not a fan of lowrance personally. And the price point isn’t that wonderful honestly. My first livescope setup was $1600 for 7” Garmin and lvs32. Buying used you can get setup with a good starter livescope bundle for 11-1200. But im a huge fan of this because maybe it’s the push the other manufacturers need to expand their arsenal.
Right on
Here’s my situation: I LOVE FFS!!!
Right on!
Lowrance cant even compare to garmin 🤣 I got so many buddies that ran garmin for years and got new boats with lowrance active target, lets just say active target was quickly removed and livescope installed….
Interesting.. good to know
Garmin is king of FFS nobody's better and I think lowrance and bird have to pay Garmin to even make FFS
1000.00 dollars it is on back order !
There ya go!
I think it’s a perfect sonar for ice fishing, but not for the Boat fishing.
These videos mean nothing until someone can show it being used on the water
Information is useless. Why would anybody want to know about something before you buy it.
Save your money and go with Garmin the King of FFS.. trust me not that much more
Got me a garmin myself
Not interested in watching a screen all day. I have managed to catch fish for 60 years without spotlighting.
Same here, just know the water your fishing and it’s usually good, but these days tournament fishing puts the pressure on catching the biggest in the least amount of time.
I like to watch fish on screen
Good for you nerd.
No need for you to comment on this video then
Well I guess that means this technology doesn’t apply to you guys then
Na it sucks lol. I'll stick with my lv34
Was in sceelsnad it had ubit set up fir ice fishing- munted on Genz ox, i beleive battery was litiun 8 amp hour, and had composite pile- all ornundwr $1300
I think lowarnce repa will be hammered at ice showa
Would think still gret on n firward-myabe have to move anlittle more or spin the pile a bit more
In down, whateverthe cone is, should be wiser than a vexilar
Hopefully they will
Release some ice footage from their sea trials
From what you say it sounds like it's not that good ....
Lot's to consider... Looking forward to some of the reviews once guys and girls start using it. So far, I've heard one and it wasn't positive.
