Quicker and easier than the nails is a wire spiral from a notebook. Or you can use craft wire and make the spiral any size you like. ...the more spirals the more sound as the beads (or whatever you use to fill) hit the wire. I use the dollar store beads. They will not break down over time as rice or beans might.
Also... let the glue dry on your final end caps before filling the stick (on the first end) and before flipping the stick (on the second end and allowing the BB's (or whatever) to fall down to the glued end and getting stuck in a sticky BB mess. Trust me on this one.
Great video. I sold my rainstick years ago, and my kids would love one. This would be a great project to try with them. :) I know it would be a more involved project, but I wonder how the sound would change if instead of nails you used dowels, and maybe in a variety of sizes....
Chicken wire stuffed into a PVC pipe or thinner-walled cylinder. Fill with BB's. Drill it with a zillion little holes to let the sound escape. Pain in the butt drilling all those holes. And here and there, a sharp end piece of chicken wire will find its way a bit out of a hole and scratch you. But the chicken wire does do a nice job.
Hey rdavidr I've watched all of your videos and your awesome can you make a video on how to make a double kick pedal or homemade cymbal mutes thanks Cheers Ivan
Awesome video I really enjoyed it I don't now how you don't have 1,000,000 subs your my favorite drum channel including drumeo and Stephen Taylor and stuff keep up the good vids
0:06 Suspended glass, is that like barchimes? (soft tingling sound, like magic in movies) And I assume lower at the page, Chimes = the tall pipes that sound like clocks? BOINGGGgggg
+Jacob It was basically full, maybe a handful missing. The only reason I used so many was due to the fact that they were too short, so if you get loner nails you will need less.
This is too fucking cool, man. Subbed. Show us your record collection, or even just a few of your favourites. Apologies if you already did this, haven't had time to check out the rest of your videos yet.
+Brandon “Drummer” Jackson Its for a christmas musical thing. Not exactly a musical, but not exactly a play, so idk what to call it haha. Did you see the measures before the rain stick though? "Suspended Glass" thatd make an interesting video haha
+rdavidr yea i get that hahaha. i was wondering cuz ive played a few musicals and ive had to come up with a bunch of crazy inventions to accomodate the music like a beat up trash crash strung by fishing line struck with a homemade cloth mallet as a Tam-Tam. but hey if the MD is fine with it im fine with it xD
+sandy quin Ive been asked that a lot. I mainly draw influence from old skate videos since theyre all just montages and usually are edited to fit with the music, and some of them use little props for the intros and such, which I always thought was cool. Also, theres a guy on youtube named frank howarth that makes furniture and other stuff and does a lot of stop motion in his vids, so ever since I started watching him Ive tried to do simple little things where I can (like laying out all the tools and materials in this video). Ive watched some of casey's work, just not into the whole vlog thing, but I can see why people ask that. He seems like a very diy kinda guy and also we use the same style of music. The only difference is I make all the beats in my videos (2 people with similar tastes in music? woah how crazy). It seems like anyone who shoots with an overhead shot gets compared to him for some reason.
Chicken wire. BBs. PVC with a zillion drilled holes for sound to escape. Some of the chicken wire will stick out of the little holes and poke your hand. Ouch. Do not roll the BBs down to the end of the sealed end of the stick before the glue dries. Trust me. A five foot piece of PVC will rain for days.
fair play to you, you really nailed this
pun intended?
Haha that joke was punny!😁
Make a cajon!
+Joe Todd +rdavidr YES!

Awesome way to make one, I will start when I get rice...and a million finishing nails.
Thanks for the instruction, I was lost.
I made one out of pvc, screws, and wooden beads when I was a kid for a school project. I love your projects.
sharing this beat on my fb. keep making amazing videos. i've gotten so many ideas from you and your channel, thank you so much.
Awesome solve. Looking forward to making my own.
if you put small seashells on it, it sounds much better, that's how they are made in Santa Marta (Colombia) on a perforated cactus wood.
Rad song mate! Love the piano work
At first I thought it a bit too "unnatural" until I heard the sound. Great job and thank you for sharing:)
I fucking love your remixes/soundcloud dude!
Also thanks for inspiring!
Cardboard tube e.g. what Aluminium foil/Plastic wrap comes on + toothpicks works too
whoooooaaaaaa, soooo thats what they do?!?!? dope, gonna make my own now
sounds like Rattle Snakes.
nice!!
what if you used small hollow tubes instead of nails, and something closer to small ball bearings instead of rice?
This is awesome!
Cool! Thanks for sharing!
@rdavidr you could use heatshrink on the outside!!
anyway, really nice DIY. thanks for sharing! :)
Also... let the glue dry on your final end caps before filling the stick (on the first end) and before flipping the stick (on the second end and allowing the BB's (or whatever) to fall down to the glued end and getting stuck in a sticky

Sounds great!
you're so talented my man. keep up the good work!

I want to make one circular rainstick, like the MEINL PERCUSSION. I'm thinking what to use, do you have a clue?
Hose.
I fucking love your music, man!

works for me.... That background tune sounds like a re-mix of a Mr. Rogers song.
Nice. How did you know how to construct a rainstick? Did you have reference of an actual rainstick?
Dude sweet idea! I actually might try this myself! :D
nice build
JUST AWESOME...!
Hey rdavidr I've watched all of your videos and your awesome can you make a video on how to make a double kick pedal or homemade cymbal mutes thanks
Cheers Ivan
That's awesome!! You made your own DIY rainstick. I have one it's made by Meinl and I think it's a 40". How many inch is that? Is that a 20" or what?
i like the background music
Good job man!
Sounds good.
Awesome video I really enjoyed it I don't now how you don't have 1,000,000 subs your my favorite drum channel including drumeo and Stephen Taylor and stuff keep up the good vids
man, you are awesome
This is pretty cool
Man those new cameras look amazing
+Michael Goodrich glad someone noticed! I only got 1 new one though.
Awesome as always! When is the next Q&A coming out?
+sm6758 I was scared someone was going to ask that... hopefully before the years over
awesome!! ur amazing!!!
Fantastic!
excelent work
0:06 Suspended glass, is that like barchimes? (soft tingling sound, like magic in movies)
And I assume lower at the page, Chimes = the tall pipes that sound like clocks? BOINGGGgggg
nailed it
+rdavidr how many nails were in that box roughly? (i would like to make one for my schools band program)
+Jacob It was basically full, maybe a handful missing. The only reason I used so many was due to the fact that they were too short, so if you get loner nails you will need less.
What kind of material is the tube?
Holy cow! How many nails did you use for that?
+Marshal Mciff the whole box, which was basically new, maybe missing 20 or so
Eventually rice will turn to powder and cannot make sound anymore.Pebbles are the best choice for rainmaker
JP Hernandez he can open it and replace it
Popcorn also works nicely
I have a shaker I made with rice, and it is not powdery after over 10 years.
You can also use beads.
You might try experimenting with different fillers: beans, lentils and using toothpicks instead of nails. Just a thought.
the last ten seconds were so funny 3:10
How long it take?
Nice!
Yeah make a cajon
You should do a vid on 1 ply vs 2 ply snare heads.
what about dime drum covers???
That's a cool trick
Have you tried to build a drum rack?
nice!
This is too fucking cool, man. Subbed. Show us your record collection, or even just a few of your favourites. Apologies if you already did this, haven't had time to check out the rest of your videos yet.
I got mine in a thrift shop xD Was like 2USD or something, saved me a lot of afford xD
+rdavidr what are you playing that you need a rainstick?
+Brandon “Drummer” Jackson Its for a christmas musical thing. Not exactly a musical, but not exactly a play, so idk what to call it haha. Did you see the measures before the rain stick though? "Suspended Glass" thatd make an interesting video haha

it looks like a big black
cucumber
R u sure Casey neistat didn't edit this vid ?
Perfecto voy a hacer para mis kids
nice
With two sticks you could have endless rain
Actually I made one myself after commenting, and realized that. lol
try a rock next time instead of the hammer, might be a little less time consuming. Awesome vid.
do you take influence from casey neistat by any chance?
+sandy quin Ive been asked that a lot. I mainly draw influence from old skate videos since theyre all just montages and usually are edited to fit with the music, and some of them use little props for the intros and such, which I always thought was cool. fair enough bro. keep doing what you're doing, it's amazing man.

where are you from ?
+Giannis Kapsalis born in Maryland, live in Virginia now.
i see a greek flag behind you
that rainstick looked more like a slim jim lol
¿Is pvc?
Cardboard tube, not PVC.
what is the tune?
+Sarah Quinn Link in the description!
+rdavidr coool thanks! loving it
Casey Neistat is that you editing?
use pebbles instead of rice.Eventually your rice will be powder.
jp hernandez what do you mean?
Facu De Mario I guess he's saying it shreds the rice? David only needed it for 1 thing so...yea
Works better with thicker nails and bb's instead of rice. Nice vid though
hey are you Greek???
Cool
You're editing is like Casey neistats.
Don't leave that laying around in a public area, lol...
+Hans Grueber haha I ended up wrapping it with twine to make it look more natural (I guess thats the best word to describe it lol)
Haha true it looks like the wood of a tree
Paint it with plasti dip
now i noticed the greek flag
That background music is freaky bro, for depressed ppl
hellraiser
Cardboard and tooth picks are cheeper
NOICE
Try this using a bamboo
you should have plasti-dipped it lol
wow
Check out the RUclips channel 20th century limited edition drum and bugle corps
What sound does it do if you hit it with a stick ?
Yeaj
Sweeet project ! But more stage presence....JK.
Notice how he doesn't say a word in this video...
That easy? Hmm...
+Matthew Parsons Yep! I would use longer nails though, just so you dont have to nail 841956978 nails haha
can I have it
Never make a Cajon!
casey neistat anyone?
