My grandfather served 3 tours in Vietnam. In his late 30’s - early 40’s as a platoon sergeant. He volunteered to go after his best friend was killed in WW2, and he was just barely too young to join the war effort when it ended in 1945. In Vietnam, he was involved in aerial surveillance. Flying primitive drones for recognizance. When their communications equipment was compromised, my grandfather told his platoon to all train an animal to keep busy. Eventually, their supplies ran out, and the men almost killed eachother fighting over whether they should keep their pet pig or eat it. Grown men cried when my grandfather gave the order to kill and eat the pig. My grandfather was eventually forced to come home when his mother died, and my grandfather was terrified that his men might die if he leaves them. A few weeks later, almost everyone in his platoon was wiped out. VC’s ambushed the platoon with children carrying POMZ grenades hidden in flowers on a suicide mission. When he returned, nearly all of his third tour was dedicated to placing bodies in body bags. According to relatives, my grandfather was never the same after that. He slowly drank himself to death. I was very young when he passed away, but even though he was always nice to me, I could tell he wasn’t what he could have been if he hadn’t gone. RIP Victor R. Welfl (1928-1995)
