Johan De Farfalla on bass on this record, he played a fretless bass, hence the strange sound. He was on the first two albums, mikael guitars and vocals, Peter Lindgren guitar and anders nordin on drums

Hey Lauren, nice video! I just love Black rose immortal and the entire Morningrise album. You should totally check out what Mikael has to say about this album, he even calls it pretentious 😂

I don’t know if you already have a video on it but, I would recommend listening to the Roundhouse Tape’s version of The Night and the Silent Water. The live version is beautiful and I feel like it communicates the themes of grief in a way that this song tries to do just more succinctly.

I've been listening to this song for over 20 years now, and watching your reaction has given me a deeper appreciation. That surprising moment where it cuts to the angelic sigh before going back to the growls, I never caught it until now. What a trip! Thanks for the reaction vid.

The cover for the album which this song comes from (morningrise) is a photo of a bridge just down the road from me... This made me pick up the CD back in 1997/8! Thought it was a local band :D at the time! Got me into the band and now sharing the O-xperience with my Son!!

Yes! Thank you for doing this song.
I believe I was one of the ones who requested this song two years ago. It was worth the wait.

The closing demon scream is awesome.
I would crank that part when I played this song at work.

My favorite Opeth albums are the first three ones, and Morningrise is the absolute best one. I remember how everyone's head was blown off in high school when this album came out. My favorite track from that CD is Nectar.
The weird sound is the bass doing insane stuff. DeFarfalla was an absolute virtuoso.

Way to hang in there, Lauren, from dawn to dusk, and it’s by far their longest song, what with all the transitions & twists & turns, but the payoff makes it worth it, for me, with that creepy, demented outro starting with the acoustic guitar at “……it’s getting dark, again……” and then that epic 18 second long harsh vocal hold is easily one of my favorite all time screams(.) 🔥🖤🤘🏼!
ps ~ That was utterly hilarious when you joked about the length of the song when it was getting dark, again! 😂

Thank you so much for this reaction, I know I was a little annoying requesting this one for a long time. The length make this song not everyone`s cup of tea, but if you like certain aspects of it (the acoustic parts, the bass, the ossitions) there are still three songs on this album that are similar and are more Opeth`s traditiional length (about 10 minutes each). The Night and the Silent Water and Advent (this one is the very forst Opeth song I ever heard and hooked me right out off the bat) are awesome, but so is Nectar too 😁 .I hope you had a very good halloween month Lauren!

"Brave Murder Day is the second studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia, released on 1 August 1996 by Avantgarde music. The lead vocals on the album are provided by Mikael Akergeldt of Opeth, as Katatonia frontman Jonas Renkse was medically unable to perform screamed vocals anymore following health issues that arose from performing the band's debut."

The most Ositiony song there is 😁 Morningrise was the first album I bought from them, and back then I always listened to albums from start to finish, so I never really knew what was part of which song : ) This album and Orkid was on a constant rotation for a good couple of years.

I am a new subscriber to your channel, your Opeth reactions I find to be quite enjoyable and reminiscent of my own discovery of Opeth a long time ago. I don't know how the music you react to is selected, but I suggest that you try out Insomnium, and start with 1. My Pale Morning Star & 2. Godforsaken. It is death metal, contemporary to older Opeth music, and very well done.

About the sounds which you wondered if they were a mellotron. It's probably a guitar but using a technique called volume swell. Basically, you pick the string while the volume of the guitar is off and you bring the volume back on. Repeat every time you pick the string again. Add a lot of reverb and you get this sound.
There are many ways to control the volume for this swell. You can use your pinky and ring fingers to manipulate the volume knob in the guitar itself while you use the pick with the other fingers. Another alternative is to have a footpedal that controls the volume. The faster (first) part was so fast that it's probably not possible to manually control the swell, but it might be an effect pedal that automatically silences the signal every time you pick a string.
Of course they could have used a synthesizer as well. So much of electric guitar's unique sound is in the attack that it can be hard to differentiate when you take the attack out.

The sound you could;dn't figure out is harmonised guitars. Combined with the medieval, bardic sound, it gives a distinct style. This was a pure demon period for Akerfeld.

My favorite album by them. It was my introduction to them back when it came out. Johan De Farfalla on bass. Plus Peter Lindgren on 2nd guitar. They sadly haven't been the same since he left.

Yay, thanks for finally getting around to this one Lauren. Only thing is, I lost the bet. I predicted your video would be 40+ minutes so I now owe my mate a pint! Definitely worth the cost of a pint to finally see you do this one, thanks again 😊 Ps, on their last tour which finished earlier this year, they actually played "Black Rose Immortal" live for the first time ever. Never played live until 2022.
