In my opinion, this is still the Greatest Season for a Quarterback! Considering he threw for 5000+ Passing Yards and 48 Touchdown Passes in 1984, an era where they played smash mouth football where they could actually hit the QB and mostly relied on the running game. This is like throwing for 7000 Yards and 70 Touchdown Passes in today's NFL!
The young Marino was state of the art. It looked new, almost revolutionary. There wasn't another qb that let that rip like that and made the passing game such a focal point of their offense. Okay there was Fouts with the Chargers, but this looked different. The Dolphins were not an offensive team before he got there. They knew what they had. He had supreme confidence in his ability and it showed. Especially in his first 4 years.
Fouts ran a passing offense read the D and threw to the open man. DM threw covered receivers open. Some of the throws go past 3 - 4 defenders. Fouts wouldn’t try to make those throws, no one else in the league did
Open or not Marino was hitting his receivers.... doing it in an era where the QBs were getting killed in the pocket, yet he’s still the undisputed greatest pocket passer ever! His throwing mechanics is flawless! What an honor it was to have witnessed this man throw that pigskin!
5,084 yards; the previous record was 4,802 yards set by Dan Fouts just 3 years earlier in 1981 48 touchdowns; the previous record was 36 touchdowns set by Y.A. Tittle in 1963, although Tittle played in just 13 games. Marino also had 36 touchdowns through 13 games. He had 16 touchdowns in the final 4 games. You could've taken off the touchdowns he threw in his final 4 games, and he would've tied Dave Kreig for the league lead in TDs
@@CarlosReyes-qe2iq Manning didn’t in 2013 when he threw 55tds but weeks 7-11 in 2004 he threw 5tds then 4tds then then 5tds then 4tds then 6tds in 5 straight games (that’s 24tds in 5 straight games) but yeah I’m not sure another QB has thrown just 4tds 4 games in a row either.
Dan Marino 1984 season as the quarterback was easily the best single season for a quarterback!🔥Receivers nor quarterbacks were protected by the NFL during the 1980s!😔
This was the first year I got into football. I turned 13 in November of '84. I lived near Cleveland, but I was an even bigger Dolphins fan, mainly because of Marino/Duper/Clayton. I got to see pretty much every Dolphins game that year. They were the most exciting offense to watch.
:34-:35 good Lord, do people know how hard that was to pull off & how few ever could have? ... he had the release of namath, the balls of farve & the accuracy of aikmann... pure juggernaut in this part of his career.
He was way more than a "pure passer". He could read defenses, he understood where the blitzes was coming from, he could take a hit, he could see the whole field, and he was a winner.
Marino was as quick as anyone in 5 yards. He’s actually running pretty far in quite a few of these throws. His left hand also kept a lot of defenders from grabbing him. He was a linebacker playing QB. He’s a big guy who took some hard hits and got right back up yelling at his blockers. Just fun to watch. I only made it to one game that year against the Raiders, at the Orange Bowl.
It would be about the same. Mahomes hasn’t thrown for 60 tds. Defensive backs have been better since then. This was the era of the rb and Lb. Now LB are not as near as important as a lock down cb. Some team done even use MLB and that was the bread and butter back then
Mahomes never had a season like Marino did in '84 pal. You could mug recievers and kill the QB after he throw. You think Mahomes would let that happen with how much he cries now?
@@michaeltaylor2297mate you couldn’t throw the ball over the middle of the field without getting your receiver decapitated in 1984, Marino would dominate in this era.
Good God I forgot just how good this guy was.... dont listen to anyone who tries to tell you marino wasnt the most gifted pocket passer ever. just watch this video.... look at 1:28-1:30 . that release is insane quickness wise. not even namath had that. furthermore, at this point his feet were quick and he slid very well and could turn his hips and go into strike position like that. & the notice the pathway, threaded darts.
He's so quick so when I say 4:28 the way he drops the ball, it's like the most impressive/unique thing that he has in his mechanics.....I drop back similar to Montana cuz that was the most effective way to read the coverage.....he was quick I enjoy watching this season of him......he's like Titanic even though bigger ships have come around with luxuries that are my ideal of fun/yet one of a kind
Evolution of how the modern QB position is played starts with 1984 Marino to 2004 Manning to 2018 Mahomes. Each had monster seasons doing something the NFL wasn’t prepared for. Marino with the way he threw the ball, Manning’s mental part of QB’ing, and Mahomes ability to improvise. There’s other great QB’s that had monster seasons but I felt like the guys I listed brought something different to the position that changed the way it’s played.
@@gregtrust5599 You are absolutely right. I think that Marino on a team like the 49ers, Giants or Bears in the 80’s would have won multiple Super Bowls without a doubt. Maybe Mahomes can win a few more whilst he has a great team around him

no. What defenses did he play? Stop
@@arsenioseslpodcast3143 some of the best defenses in the NFL, they still would be elite today.

Greatest pure passer in NFL history.
there hasnt been a QB to date that can throw a ball as good as Danny.......100^

Greatest pure passer all time 🔥🏈

The golden arm.

Thanks ......thx alot......once a month I need marino fix.
Man he was good. Defense kept him from raising the trophy 🏆

Marino's arm was a flat out blur
Dan
Makes it look EASY
the 1984 dolphins would shred the 85 bears
No, I think their offense vs their defense would be a pretty close matchup.
Back before the west coast offense made it over complicated for rookies just let them throw it deep.
why isnt clayton in the hall?

Quick Release Effortless Arm Strength
Looks like Mahommes
I would take Marino over any QB past or present and thats no disrespect to Mahomes. He might be the greatest QB I've seen since #13

I’d take Marino, Rodgers then Mahomeboy!
The zip on Marino's bullet passes are crazy. Look how fast they get to the target once the ball is released.
mahomes moves better and can position to throw faster. but marino had a quicker release & threw a slightly faster dart.
