    Do you think Taiwan's economic miracle is because of good fiscal management?

    • @yanglee1404
      @yanglee1404 20 дней назад +13

      Good fiscal management is certainly an apparent reason. The major strengths of Taiwan are in export and high tech. Excessive surplus in trade ensures a healthy economy.

    Just to make it very clear: In absolute terms, Taiwan's debt continues to rise. It's only because Taiwan's GDP growth outpaces debt growth, that the ratio seemingly goes down. Also, as mentioned, Taiwan barely got hit by the pandemic, and therefore did not need as much of a monetary stimulus to keep the economy going. This in turn meant that Taiwan had much less of an inflation shock in the aftermath of COVID, saving the cost of fighting that as well.
    Taiwan knows that it can't rely on anyone else (i.e., IMF) for support due to its precarious international position. So it leans on the conservative side when it comes to monetary, exchange rate and fiscal policy. This probably meant that Taiwan could have seeked higher risk, higher return options (e.g, more ambitious infrastructure investment), but generally did not do so. But it also meant that Taiwan retained the flexbility to weather the Asian financial crisis, the 2008 financial crisis, and COVID with ease.

    We often underestimate the strength of the land we live in. As a Taiwanese, I know that since the 1960s, we have had leaders who laid a strong foundation for our society. During the 2008 financial crisis, our central government skillfully navigated the challenges posed by Wall Street, helping us avoid the worst impacts of the crisis. Bit by bit, we have accumulated the wealth and stability that define us today. However, we still face potential crises that we need to monitor closely. I hope that our talented individuals who study abroad will return home to help make our nation even greater and more livable than it already is. ✌️🏼

      As a country, we had to stay vigilant to stay alive. Taiwanese democracy is not as idyllic as Athens where people could afford to have their public officials to be elected by drawing lots, but is more akin to a Roman system where great power is bestowed to the government under the watchful eyes of its citizens.

    Taiwan’s low national debt can be attributed to a deep-rooted sense of financial caution shaped by historical and geopolitical challenges. Following the Chinese military occupation after World War II, Taiwan experienced a drastic currency devaluation, with the Taiwanese dollar depreciating by 40,000 times overnight. This financial trauma, coupled with the arrival of millions of refugees from mainland China in 1950, ingrained a wariness toward economic instability among the Taiwanese, especially the older generations. Decades of diplomatic isolation due to pressure from China have further amplified this uncertainty, as Taiwan faces ongoing risks of military or economic conflict. Consequently, national fiscal policy emphasizes prudent public spending to safeguard against future disruptions, reflecting a societal preference for self-reliance and financial stability.

    Taiwan's Industrial and Overall Economic Strength.
    Many people are unaware of the industrial and overall economic strength of Taiwan today.
    Taiwan has a well-developed technology and manufacturing sector. It is ranked first in the world in semiconductor chip manufacturing, first in the world in ICT equipment manufacturing, third in the world in machinery and components manufacturing, third in the world in biotechnology companies, fourth in the world in machine tools, sixth in the world in chemical plants, and fifth in the world in shipbuilding tonnage. Taiwan's aerospace industry is also ranked sixth in the world in terms of output. Taiwan is also the world's largest and most technologically advanced carbon fiber composite material OEM, with applications ranging from tennis rackets and bicycles to aircraft components.
    Taiwan has many companies that are hidden champions in the global manufacturing sector. These companies are at the top of their respective industries, but they are not well-known to the general public. Taiwan has developed its own supercomputers, AI computers, quantum chips, satellites, and has successfully test-fired military space rockets on multiple occasions.
    In terms of overall technology and manufacturing strength, Taiwan is on par with the United States, Japan, and the EU industrial countries. Taiwan is currently the 20th largest economy in the world, with total foreign investment assets of over $2 trillion. It is the fifth largest foreign investor in the world and the fifth largest net creditor nation.
    Manufacturing accounts for over 36% of Taiwan's GDP and contributes over 50% to economic growth, the highest in Asia. Taiwan's listed companies invest and set up factories overseas, and their overseas offshore processing and manufacturing import and export trade exceeds $1 trillion each year (most of which is included in Hong Kong's import and export trade figures). The import and export trade of these Taiwanese companies is not included in Taiwan's import and export trade figures.
    If the import and export trade of Taiwanese companies' overseas factories is included in Taiwan's own import and export trade figures, the total global trade volume of Taiwanese companies will reach $1.9 trillion, surpassing Japan and the Netherlands to become the fourth largest trading power in the world after the United States, China, and Germany.
    Taiwanese companies' overseas factories have supported the families of hundreds of millions of employees in China, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia.
    It is estimated that Taiwan will enter the top 20 economies in the world in 2023 based on its own domestic production and manufacturing import and export trade, becoming a member of the G20. Among the G20 countries, Taiwan is the only one with no natural resources, relying solely on manufacturing, and with a population of 23.5 million and the smallest land area.

    Taiwan was an aboriginal country. Netherlands was the first country to colonise Taiwan in 16 century. Dutch imported many Chinese from China as foreign labors to build Taiwan in 16 countries. Japanese colony from 1895-1945, and then Republic of China ( Taiwan, Republic Of China. ) took over rule of the island after Japan lost the war. Taiwan has Never controlled by People Republic of China ( P.R.C. established late in 1949 ) . Democratic Taiwan R.O.C was in UN until 1979. Great video. One caveat to point out: Taiwan continues to have an export driven economy, and suppresses its foreign exchange rate as a result just like most Asian economies. The nominal wage in USD is still low comparing to developed countries but ranked near the top by purchasing power. What this means is labor is still cheaper than what it's supposed to be. For example, you can work in US and move to Taiwan to live very comfortably, but not the other way around. Taiwan government recognized this problem and have been pressuring corporations to increase wages over the years.

    The nature of the debt is to raise taxes for all, and when that money flows into the market, it causes wages to rise, prices to rise, and housing prices to rise.

    Taiwan is a great economy. Unfortunately, the workers are NOT benefiting from the fortune with average wages of less than NTD40,000 (USD1,350) That is very, very low for a per capita income of over USD 33,000.

    • @saumahraranges4170
      @saumahraranges4170 18 дней назад

      Yes. That’s true but you forgot to mention the cost of living is very very low comparing to advanced economies. Hence the purchasing power is much higher than most advanced economies. According to IMF, PPP per capita is around 79k, ranked at 12. Taiwan is far from perfect. There is housing price crisis going on for quite a while, resulted mostly from low interest rate policy. If you don’t buy any house, you can live quite comfortably in Taiwan actually.

      Taiwan might not be perfect, but it’s definitely far from hell. Taiwan's income may not be as high as in some countries, but compared to neighboring countries like Japan and South Korea, and other developed nations, the cost of living is more affordable. Taiwan also offers an excellent healthcare system, safety, and a friendly community that can make a big difference. 🙂
