The move to the extreme right by the Republican party began in the 1980s with Rush Limbaugh spewing his toxic propaganda arguing that "welfare queens" were destroying America, referring to feminists as "Fema-Nazis." Limbaugh made no bones about his hostility to Blacks & the Civil Rights movement, bashing any policy initiative that argued for worker rights, collective bargaining, universal healthcare, addressing climate change, spiraling student tuition costs, as "liberal communism." Limbaugh & his ilk became widely popular with millions of disgruntled working-class whites who had lost their jobs with the introduction of mechanization, robotics, & free trade. With Reagan coming to office in 1980 initiating policies that rolled back the progressive agenda, telling his minions (David Stock in particular as head of Management & Budget) to cut taxes for the wealthy & corporations & shift more of the burden on the middle-class. They used "supply-side" economics as their justification, an economic theory that erroneously argued if you cut taxes at the top of the economic ladder it will trickle down to benefit everyone. Get rid of regulation that protects the environment (remember Reagan's famous quote, if you've seen one red-wood tree, you've seen them all), collective bargaining, throw money at the military even though there was no legitimate threat to the U.S. with the size of our military at the time & weapons of mass destruction. Reagan quadrupled payroll taxes (social security & Medicare taxes), & he tripled federal government deficits. Reagan & Limbaugh argued that the free market will take care of us all, another LIE. To assure that hearts & minds would be twisted into buying all the lies, they got rid of the "fairness doctrine" where the FCC would regulate broadcasting to assure that lies would not be tolerated & licenses could be threatened. The fairness doctrine made it almost impossible for people like Limbaugh & social media to foment & buttress ideas and movements promoting hate, bigotry, & lawless violence. Today's Hannity's, Tucker Carlson's, Marjorie Greene Taylor's of the world have social platforms into the millions, fulfilling Goebbels' biggest wet dream.
Reinforcing the evolving destruction of America's democratic institutions is getting extremist onto the Supreme Court with a 6-3 super majority to distort & undermine previous decisions that protected the right to vote, worker safety & collective bargaining. The corporate media has served the far right well. They frame questions that follow the right's agenda today, giving legitimacy to the Republican party that has become a criminal enterprise led by Donald Trump, willing to destroy democracy, to keep this megalomaniac in power, & helping Putin & other authoritarians internationally. We should not be a society where a Supreme Court prevents OSHA from doing its job of protecting worker's safety, allows for the suppression of votes, lets the state of Texas captures pregnant women for 9 months & uses vigilantes to win bounties of $10,000 or more for anyone helping them get an abortion, & calls money free speech, unleashing unlimited amounts of contributions to further corrupt the election process, letting 19 states pass voter-suppression laws to assure Republicans can "legally" steal elections. There is no fraud in America's elections. Donald Trump lost the last election, but the majority of white women & white men still voted for this wanna-be gangster. The only way to stop this authoritarian freight train is for American voters to wake up & stop drinking the Qanon kool aid. Vote for the lesser of the 2 evils. Vote for the Democratic party if you want to revert to common sense policies that benefit the overwhelming majority in America. Blacks, Latinos, immigrants & Muslims in the U.S. are not your enemies. Don't let Rupert Murdoch achieve his goal of destroying the United States.

@@steveknows62 Because there are more people in the world who are not racist, just as your election proved, Americans recognised a tyrant in the former guy and voted him out. We are in a period of massive change, unlike anything we’ve seen in the history we know. The worst of human behaviour is being revealed world wide. Those who have controlled the economy, belief systems and education will be removed. It feels slow, but it’s happening. Science is supporting all this change. Quantum theory was the beginning of understanding that we are made of the same material as the Cosmos. We are only physically manifest when we return to Earth School for another lesson. Everything is energy vibrating at different levels to create the things we need to live here. We have been coming and going from this planet which was created for us, by us a long time ago. We are eternal as is the Cosmos which is boundless and we are not alone, but what other beings are doing is not our business. Reincarnation makes one responsible for one’s actions. If I do not learn a lesson in being a conscious compassionate human being in this life, I’ll have to do it again. Too much like hard work, let’s do it now. As we sow, so we reap, we get what we give and life offers us challenges which we are up for. It’s much easier to treat each other as we would be treated.

You appear to be ignoring January 6, it's larger meaning, and what it portends for our future.
These people are serious about undoing our democracy in favor of a trump dictatorship and various republican controlled states are passing laws which if upheld, would enable them to reject election results that displease them.
This is no time for rose-colored glasses nor high-sounding platitudes.

I believe that women in politics will tend to balance out men's politics, and that is good and necessary. But let's be real, Jennifer Rubin. Don't give white evangelical women an excuse for voting for Trump, saying they are "complicated."(more white women voted for Trump in 2020 than 2016) No, some women, like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, are just as dangerous as the men of that political persuasion. And there is nothing inherently better about women than men. That is simply sexist. And Michel Martin, one of the best interviewers out there, correctly implies that white women were terribly slow with issues of race and xenophobia. Thank you, Michel.

The speaker mentioned "rule of law" as one of the reasons for identifying with conservatism. This confuses me because I have never seen this is a characteristic of conservatism vis-a-vis liberalism. How can conservatives (even traditional conservatives) claim to be more in favor of "rule of law" than others in civilized society, regardless of political association.
