Regardless of whether the source is trustworthy, torrents rely on a peer-to-peer network of everyone trying to download the file and share it at the same time this means that everyone's IP address is being seen in the pool. All the copyright holder has to do is download the torrent(which can be automated by bots) and see everyone who's downloading, uploading, AND HOW MUCH they're sharing providing them with a wealth of information which can be forwarded to your ISP. This is where a VPN comes into play. By funneling your traffic from your Internet service provider to the VPN service provider and then out of their servers, you mask your IP address with one of many VPN public IP addresses encrypting all traffic in such a way that even your ISP do not know where, when, OR WHAT you're downloading and uploading but rather how much data is traveling Which is why you pick a VPN with an "Audited" No Log Policy making it harder to track since there is no record of where the IP address originated from. Copyright holders will then go after the low hanging fruit instead of you.
As a torrent uploader for 18 years, I think seedbox is the best way to go, not a VPN, although I use both tbh.
Some people say not seeding is a good idea, but wait until they want to download something they really really want that isn't being seeded, then the Karma will kick in 😅

I've been torrenting for almost 20 years and have never used a VPN. Not received any form of penalty by the authorities or my ISP whatsoever (in the UK). I'm pretty sure the only reason why people DO get prosecuted is if they continuously SEED as that is a means of unlawful redistribution of property. But if you download and immediately stop the torrent from downloading/uploading, you should be completely fine as it is for most likely personal 'consumption'/use.

It's just that I've never once used one whilst torrenting and I've never once received any ISP blocks, termination of services nor infringement warnings. So why bottleneck my own download by using something that I've never needed before for the past 20 years?
@@JynxedKoma I use ExpressVPN and it does not restrict the bandwidth to the degree it’s taking a while for the dl, but definitely other vpn’s may do that especially back in the day. Some people here are writing comments like "you don't need VPNs unless you are in ~ insert country with authoritarian regime ~." That is completely untrue. There's several country's ISPs - from all over the world - that will throttle your connection if they detect you are downloading large files from your torrent client. And you may get a fine in the mail a few days later too if their laws are strict - particularly in developed countries with updated piracy laws.
If you are torrenting, use a VPN, an anti-virus, maybe even a more private browser than the usual chrome etc, and ideally trusted sources. It's too risky not to be smart about this. And don't take this information at face value from random youtube commenters, myself included. Research it carefully on your own before you start doing it.

Ever since I started downloading all my torrents on my phone instead of my computer 2 years ago I never again received any copyright notice from my isp or letters in the mail from any copyright lawyers, also my 5G service is even faster than my home internet, the only thing is that if you have an iPhone then this is not an option for you since Apple doesn't allow any torrent to be downloaded on an iPhone or anything else to be downloaded for that matter.

The spam ads could be very dangerous trojans, rootkits, spyware, or even malware--or even worse--ransomware! Yes, you need to mask your IP when doing that, but you also need to avoid malware troubles also when doing that. You may need to have 2 antivirus programs running when you are doing that (even though computer experts say only run one antivirus), so if one antivirus is ruined by malware during torrenting--another antivirus can take up the slack. No promises here, because torrenting means you are still taking a big gamble on your freedom! Not just your privacy!

Btw, is there a better way of sending large files than via torrents? I just need to send large files from time to time to friends that are too big for email. Nothing sensitive (or illegal) about them so I could care less if others download them, etc. However, if there is a way of doing it without taking virus risk then all the better. Or is that utorrent software pretty safe if you have virus protection?

I'm a big fan of Resilio Sync. It uses the same technology that underlies torrents, but it's for transferring files between individuals. I use it to back up my entire work drive to a computer in my closet. Also all of my writing goes into a folder, and gets synced between my laptop and desktop so I can pick up where I left off.
Sometimes I'll send a huge file to a friend, which is just a link I send him. He has Sync installed on his computer so it's easy to just download that file directly from me (no middle-man server like Google Drive).

Learn how to create private vpns your self with multiple levels of sub nets in your own network using basic routers that dont collect data.
When you subnet your networks properly the only thing they can collect is a user and pc name, macs and local ip address. If you do multi levels of subnets properly then they can only see the name of the router and the first level subneted network.
Its not as hard as you may think, its worth the hassle if privacy is important

Can I do torrenting if I vpn my whole network or it is better to have it in one device?
So when torrenting if I’m in the US and connect to a US server with P2P will my isp still be able to track me because I’m using the vpn in the same place where I’m at? Or does it not matter which server you connect to?

For a guy telling people about vpn safety and then recommending utorrent which was installing cryptominers on peoples computers and linking malicious Trojans through their ads, I would probably stay away.

Can somebody help me? I've been downloading torrent files since I'd learned about it. I still don't know about the bad stuff it causes or what. I try to use a vpn when downloading the actual torrent files, but when I try to use utorrent, the torrents would not download so I always end up downloading the torrent without vpns. I thought vpns are supposed to make it easier to download them? Please helpppp.
it should be fine if youre doing it in the phone and are not distributing it just delete it from utorrent once you are done

Torrenting is a way to share digital files between users.
And these file can be anything.
It can be music ,movies, video games, programs ,scripts ....
When you want to file your computer asks all the available users/computers to send you parts of this file so at the end you're going to have 100% of this stuff you want.
But have in mind that if anyone else wants this file or a part of it your computer will send it. (In some countries it's legal to send but not to download)
In conclusion if the content is illegal then you get in trouble.

Just don't download copywritten products and you should be OK. I only download unauthorized recordings or dvds. And I don't sell them. If you download new movies, or any movies you are stealing. If you download commercially released products - music, movies, whatever, you are stealing. If you download music from a website that doesn't allow commercial product or from a website that respects artists that don't want you to SHARE their music, then you should be OK. Even the Allman Brothers Band who allows people to share recordings hasn't moved into letting torrents go up online. but then too, they are a dead band. The Rolling Stones allow it though as does The Who, Led Zeppelin, etc. Now if I could only get rid of my Firewall situation.
