京都の静けさと伝統が交差する白川。白川といえば三条から祇園あたりの枝垂れ柳が連なる『The 京都』を連想しますが、その源流について考えたことはありますか？
白川は、比叡山から如意ヶ嶽にかけての京都東山北部の谷(比叡平あたり)を源流とし、北白川で京都盆地に入り、南行して岡崎で琵琶湖疏水と合流し、仁王門橋で分岐し、祇園を通り鴨川に注ぎます。全長9.3kmの一級河川となります。
白川の名前は、白川砂が下流に大量に流出したことに由来します。
今回、この白川の源流を訪ね、白川を最初から最後まで歩いてみました。今回は源流編です。

The Shirakawa River originates in the valley in the northern part of Higashiyama between Mt. Hiei and Mt. Nyoigadake, enters the Kyoto basin at the Kitashirakawa, flows south to join the Biwako Sosui at Okazaki, branches off at Niomon Bridge, and flows through Gion into the Kamo River. The name of the Shirakawa River comes from the large amount of Shirakawa sand that flowed downstream.
This time, I visited the source of the Shirakawa River and walked along the river from beginning to end. This video is about the Shirakawa River source.
