They have reached out to me prior to the video release and clarified that the hill should be *15%* NOT 15 degrees. Their website has been updated to show 8 degrees.
I have the Discover 1, and despite having a maximum overload power of 850 watts, I can ride mine up hills steeper than yours, specifically the grades on historic El Camino Real in San Diego County: About 200 feet rise in about 2000 feet of run, or approximately 10%. Speed is unimportant because there is no uphill bike lane on El Camino Real by my house -- I have to ride at walking pace on the sidewalk going uphill. Mine is yellow, which I chose for maximum safety. Overall, the Velotric bikes are designed for safety.
I use Ride with GPS app to get my elevations and grades. I use Trail Forks to find new trails and always riding the local mountains up to 4,800'. Great channel, bought few products. Started my channel under two weeks ago, I was happy to include yours on my links for info, products and bikes. Also a mention in the upcoming accessories video. Great job! Here's my big hill climb: ruclips.net/video/J2MOfJQytkc/видео.html
I truly enjoyed your video! Good to see you out and back at it. I am a cancer survivor who has similar health stamina as you and enjoy an eBike. My legs are so weak I had to get a step through bike. I couldn't even lift my legs. So seeing you out there is encouraging to me. Keep it up!!!
What you are describing with your health is what I went through 5 years ago. I've been slowly getting a little better with some things but only just a little and other things have not gotten better and some worse. I've never been the same but overall I don't think that you and I are suffering from the exact same thing and not for the same reasons so you may be able to recover fully but just wanted you to know that I know what you're saying and what it feels like. Some people just can't understand how it is.
Absolutely awesome you are riding. If you ever find yourself in Far North Queensland I think you would enjoy riding around here. Some beautiful areas and some killer hills.
So glad to see you out riding. I'm recovering from an ankle fusion. Bascically three years not walking and I'll be 75 soon. I can tell you the E-bike is really helping. I would never be able to get up a hill. I think about 17 to 18 miles. I am really happy to see you recovering.
loved the test. I live in east Tennessee in the middle of the moutains on 90 acers. I kneed a step through. I have to also worry about bears that can run 35 miles a hour. I hunt and a four wheeler makes to much noise. Still looking.
Great video. I recently subbed to your channel. I have the Velotric Discover 1 and it’s my first Ebike. I’ve been riding daily for just over 50 days now and my health is getting better. It has totally reinvigorated my desire to get out and ride.
SO happy to see you riding again! Good video, and it seems they over sold it. The funny thing is that you can take a Rad folding bike, put your controller on it, and climb 25% grades. It is a nice looking bike though, and I know a few things that could be done to it (hint, hint). For me, the biggest deal breaker is the throttle being gimped by the PAS level. I don't know why bike companies are doing it, but I won't buy a bike setup that way.
I upgraded my Rad Rhino controller to the 35 amp one and also fitted a hub motor to the front so it's dual motor. I weigh 280lb and one of the steepest banks around my home town is 25% gradient (I don't know what it is in degrees) but using both motors on my bike it can pull me up easily without pedalling, it's freakin awesome!
Kyle that was an awesome video and it brought back some memories from this summer when I was doing a similar test ride on a Aventon Aventure that I had opened to Class 3 and when I was at the far end of the ride it was showing 35% but once I stopped it dropped to 7% and I had a long way to go to get back home. I'm an older guy and a bit chunky, with a blown knee and a broken back so this was not a happy time for me but I did manage to limp home using PAS 1 very sparingly. Since range anxiety is one of the main concern that comes up with new Ebike riders that come into our Ebike shop, this was a very relevant video that I am sure many of your viewers will appreciate as I did. We are looking forward to carrying the Blackbird in the spring of 2023. Cheers, i-Cycle Electric Bike Company
Best part of this video was seeing you ride a bike again! Had to double check the date to make sure it wasn't an old one I might have missed. Looks like a nice bike and I'm surprised with a geared motor it lacked low end power. I much prefer a hybrid motor that can charge the battery when going downhill. My Rad City 4 has one and I really like it. But so many manufacturers are getting away from that technology I fear my next ebike is going to have to be a DIY build. Trying to learn as much as I can about them as a result.
So good to see you on a bike, Great news! As for the Nomad 1, not so impressed. I have a Sondors MXS with 4,600 miles on it that will easily out run the Nomad on those hills.
Great Job Kyle! Hope you made it back home safely and without too much stress on you. I found myself in the same situation many times on my Rad Runner + and had to call family to come get me and lift the bike into the back of a truck to get it home. I'm hoping with the weather getting milder I'm going to be able to get out again soon, if the rain will hold off long enough.
Very good video, thank you for making it. I have had a Nomad 1 for a few weeks and I’m really really enjoying it. I think your comments are fair. I am bigger than you are around 280 pounds I think 20 -25 miles would be about the range. I would expect to see. I ride on very flat areas compared to you.
I just got my knee replaced and looking into purchasing an ebike also! Happytail tv did a review on this bike also and on his hill test he said this bike out performed pretty much every fat bike in this price range. I think I will be ordering one of these, I only get two colors to choose from, grey or cyan here in Canada. ( which color do you think would look best in this bike?) thanks for the video!!
I wouldn't recommend running your battery, any battery down to about zero as it will diminish the life of your battery, even lithium batteries. I have the Nomad and on a big hill it can go up but slowly from a stop. If I'm already moving it seems to work fine going up. I had 2 rear tire flats the first couple weeks so make sure you get a flat repair kit. Easy to fix the inner tube, but is difficult to get the rear wheel off and on. I bought a bike stand now. But overall this is a great ebike. You would have to spend much more to get something considerably better.
Hmm this makes me think you could do a good video about gearing torque with different rear cogs. Take out your bafang ultra warthog and order some larger cogs for the rear cassette and see how effortlessly it climbs like a goat.
I live on a hill and the last mile home is an approximately 600 ft. elevation gain. I had an e-bike with 250w motor, and I was able to get home easily the first several time but eventually the both the battery and motor started giving trouble when I go uphill.
Is it possible to install 2.3mm thick rotors with Bengal Ares 3 brakes? Thanks for the great content and valuable ebike information, we are arrested pulling for you to make a complete recovery,
Haven't heard from you in a few weeks, hopefully you've had a very busy and Blessed Christmas! I was wondering if you've seen the Super 73 Indian, yet and what your thoughts were on it also the new Rad Trike. Hope you're health is better these days, Kyle!!!
Speaking of claims.. Ariel Rider Kepler owners all report that they never have see any wattage readings over 1,340 watts coming from the Kepler display. I own a Kepler and have never seen over 1,340 watts ever. A big claim to fame is this 1,800 watt peak from the G063.1000D motor. So I'm thinking this is a juiced up 750 watt Bafang hub motor with its 33 amp controller or there is room for a new 40 amp controller. The bike does very well as is but this wattage reading is almost 500 less than they claim. Verified by hundreds of us that own this model.
I'd like more torque for power rather than more speed I mean 20 is fast enough on a bike. One time I got stuck on a hill I have one leg and I had a wagon and I had to push it with one leg the rest of the way up the hill
mid drive is the answer my friend. the bafang ones are throttle compatible aswell and have huge power (the more integrated g510 ultra has 160nm of torque). you can use the bikes gears to shift so you have top speed and torque for climbs.
Morning Kyle l...a might chilly... U R looking spry... awesome 👍 on the getting better. Have you heard of Utopia Carbon Fiber Bikes? My guess was going to be 25 miles.
a mid drive bike would start laughing at this hill...for such hills hub drives are stupid inefficient especially at low speed. you need 1200w peak for getting up the hill i need 400w. this is like with a car stuck in one gear (teslas can have one gear because the motor has wayyy more power).
You never mention rider weight, that I noticed in this hill test video. Shouldn't you factor payload into the numbers so your viewers can get a better idea of the bikes hill climbing ability? All do respect but you look kinda heavy in this.
this is why u should stay far away from fat tyre bikes, they lack power, it's not efficient, it's not as fast, its heavier, you won't have the same top speed, and pedaling without motor assist is going to be a true workout.
They have reached out to me prior to the video release and clarified that the hill should be *15%* NOT 15 degrees. Their website has been updated to show 8 degrees.

Honestly, I think you gave this bike a torture test beyond its design. Your video title should be edited to reflect that. That's what I'd do.

In my testing the nomad can summit a 20% grade under throttle only, not many hub drive bikes in this price range can do that
Yes, a 14 degree hill is a 25% grade
I truly enjoyed your video! Good to see you out and back at it. I am a cancer survivor who has similar health stamina as you and enjoy an eBike. My legs are so weak I had to get a step through bike. I couldn't even lift my legs. So seeing you out there is encouraging to me. Keep it up!!!
It's good to see you out on a bike! Thanks for the thorough review, I don't see many where they manage to drain the battery completely!
Great to see you out and about and doing much better, Kyle!
I'm so glad to see you making your own progress health wise! Also so glad to see you on a bike doing a review again ❤

Nice looking bike Kyle good to see you on it getting fit.
Glad to see you on bikes again
I’m glad you’re getting better, and I missed your videos!
Congrats on being able to ride again!
I got rid of my rad because it was gutless going up hills so I went with the E Niner what a difference

I have owned my Nomad for a month or so now. I got about 30 miles with mostly throttle and I weigh over 230
Keep it up; it's nice to have your objectivity.
You know what would be really nice a three-wheel e-bike that does not roll so easy like they do. One that is Affordable for the average person

This has me chuckling in a 250 watt motor from Bafang.
Glad your health is getting better. How does this bike compare to your top 5 fat tire ebikes?
It wouldn't be as good as those, but it's several hundred cheaper. It's good for the price for sure.

I'm skeptical of the watt meter accuracy on some of these bikes.

A bike best suited for flatlanders up to 5° grade. For this bike 10° is extreme riding for the rider and puffed up boasting from the manufacturer.
Glad to see you out on two wheels buddy!
How many watts is required to charge one of these batteries? How many watts would an old school dynamo generator put out

I would love to see you do a review on the XQS X20 Pro ebike, my experience with it was really great until I lost control and slammed it in a wall.

Measure the temperature of the motor when you reach the top. Try not to burn yourself.

Morning Kyle l...a might chilly... U R looking spry... awesome 👍 on the getting better. Have you heard of Utopia Carbon Fiber Bikes? My guess was going to be 25 miles.
I haven't seen one in person.
A lesson in improper battery usage.
48v 14ah=20miles±
Imagine, an ebike vendor lying about range and ability.
a mid drive bike would start laughing at this hill...for such hills hub drives are stupid inefficient especially at low speed. you need 1200w peak for getting up the hill i need 400w. this is like with a car stuck in one gear (teslas can have one gear because the motor has wayyy more power).
What is the fascination of Americans with e-bikes with throttles? Why not buy an electric moped instead so you can go faster, further and safer.
Exercise
1hp won't get you up many hills a moped has about 6hp
You never mention rider weight, that I noticed in this hill test video. Shouldn't you factor payload into the numbers so your viewers can get a better idea of the bikes hill climbing ability? All do respect but you look kinda heavy in this.

This doesn't have anything to so with the tires. I've got bikes with much fatter tires that go much quicker!
You are not even peddling????
