Ukraine launches 'drone army' to combat Russia

- The Ukrainian Army has raised $20 million from foreign donors to boost its drone capabilities, according to Radio Free Europe.
Ukrainian Army drone units showed off new models of military and converted civilian drones used in the fight against Russian forces in a video published on August 4.
The demonstration was part of the military’s “Drone Army” project, aimed at raising more money to buy drones.
The army plans to expand its drone fleet to include 1,200 more military reconnaissance and other unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as “gas-powered miniature planes,” RFE/RL reported.

Why have the arm forces not put together 3 or 4 mobile M777 forces of 7 to 10 guns and in these areas of concentrated troops such as around Kerson and Bakmut applied Barrages of Artillery shot, I see in every video, shooting at equipment but never taking out the trenches, Also never flying night recon with night vision drones, Finding troop concentrations and before breakfast sending them a barrage of artillery for BREAKFAST. (Really someone in the artillery needs to get it done!) Saves a lot of lives.
The 580 Phoenix Ghost drones the US has just sent Ukraine have thermal imaging and awesome hover time, so we might start seeing exactly what you mentioned.

its a scary thought that anyone can buy a civilian drone and attach a home made explosive on to it. the problem is you could operate it from a distance and no one would no who did it this will be terrorism of the future :( but on the other hand im glad Ukraine has them will be a big help
That's one more reason I'm so sceptical of gun control here in the US as a way of reducing violent crime, especially by mass shooters. Because psychos will always find a way...and if you block them from an easier way, it might only serve to guide them to find a more effective way.

Would it be possible to make drones with an outer layer of clear plastic to make them harder to see, more stealthy?
A protected, covered layer of the same material emergency blankets are made from might defeat their thermal signature. During the day I doubt they can do anything to defeat discovery by precision optics and radar. I don't know if their heat signature is a problem for drones, though. All I know is that the 580 Phoenix Ghost drones the US has just sent the Ukrainians can detect a thermal signature on the ground, making them operational at night along with far more time in the air than the Switchblade drones. So nighttime operation by the Phoenix Ghost drones would not only render optics useless, even if they were picked up by radar I don't think the Russians have anything they'd be willing to use at night to try to shoot them down. Even if they had anything capable they'd likely just miss while giving away their positions. In fact my guess is that both sides are using cheap drones specifically to try to bait their opponents to giving away their positions.

I would think a tactic by the Ukrainians would be to use a "bait" drone to get the enemy to give away their positions, then come back at night with a Phoenix Ghost drone (that have thermal imaging) and take that Russian anti-aircraft out.
So fun to think of all the nasty possibilities!

In fact, throughout the history of warfare the side with less technology (or other resources) available to them has used their resources more intelligently, not just more frugally. It was certainly true of the Vietcong. In Ukraine at this point, the question arises which side is more disadvantaged when it comes to resources. Whereas the Ukrainians have been more intelligent and resourceful until now, the Russians now have as much motivation to be more intelligent and creative in their use of their resources, if only out of sheer desperation. It's interesting to think about how this war is going to shape future warfare in various countries - in Russia, in Europe, in the US, and (most worryingly, in my opinion) in China.

It was 2003 when the UK Army realised the value of UAVs, I was part of the first dedicated UAV regiment, such was thr value of having that live imagery we would fly them till they ran out of fuel and then just sned another one up to replace it! 😅
Until recently I was your exact opposite when it comes to appreciating drones. Less than 2 years ago I couldn't believe the guys who made a group test ride review of adventure motorcycles had the budget to hire a helicopter to do the aerial photography.
They didn't have the budget for it. They could only afford a drone. Just like people like me can only afford RUclips.
