  • Join us on the fastest Japanese Bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka (Shinkansen Nozomi) in Green Class. We had the best time on this 2 and half hour ride from Tokyo Station to Shin Osaka Station. The Nozomi train is on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line. We decided to take the Nozomi train instead of the Hakari or the Kodama. We hope you enjoy the ride as much as we did. We have loved riding on the trains in Japan.

    Um I believe no shoes are supposed to be on the fold out part of the foot rest at your seats. The topside with carpet yes, once you fold it out though that is supposed to be kept clean. Your neighbor across the aisle is in socks on his footrest. Oh well, too late now, live and learn...

    When I was in the navy in 1967 we were in the china sea off Vietnam. We went to Yokuska Japan for RR. A lot of the guys just wanter to go on shore and drink. A bunch of us got together to ride the built train. We went to the train station in Yokuska but found out that the bullet train ran from Tokyo , we south of Tokyo. So we caught the train and went to Tokyo. when we got there we found that the Bullet train ran north from Tokyo. We only had the day to get back to our ship so we toured Tokyo and then went back to our ship on the train. Thanks for giving me chance to ride an even faster train than I missed when I was there. Great video.😁😁

    We were in Japan two weeks ago. Took the train to Sapporo in Hokkaido. Four hours on the Shinkansen, followed by four hours on conventional train. Just booked regular seats, not Green Car, after reading reviews. Seats are all reserved, in three / three configuration. No carpet on the floor, no footrest, but perfectly comfortable. We bought food at the railway station and ate on the train. Express train a lot slower, very comfortable and scenic. Enjoyed both the experiences and would love to do more. All trains in Japan are quiet..even on the subway.

    The contrast with Amtrak must have been jarring. We're just back from our US trip and quickly realised why they have these striped red poles to hold onto between the cars. Travelling on the regional express from DC - Philly at 125mph was quite alarming. Everything rattled and shook and we were quite relieved to arrive in one piece! Great video!

    Great report. Sounds like you really did your homework. The nice thing about the green car besides having bigger seats and more room is that often it's as empty as yours was. Sometimes you can be the only one in the entire car. The regular cars, even reserved cars, are often packed with noisy tourists. The shelf on the window can be used to put your drinks on. The shinkansen is so smooth they won't slide or tip over.

I am glad you explained the differences with the JR passes and that the Nozomi trains are not included but can be taken with an additional fee. My last trip to Japan I opted for the Green JR Pass and will continue to use it on my future trips to Japan. One other point of the Japanese trains besides punctuality, is the cleanliness of the trains. Unfortunately, Amtrak needs improvements in both categories.

    My ship was docked in Yokosuka in '69 & I wandered onto a train platform. There wasn't Google Maps or GPS, so I went wherever my feet led me. My intention was to get off in Tokyo, but wound up in Yokohama. The Japanese are incredibly efficient, & there's a lot we can learn from them. Our U.S. cultures are different which explains why our train system lacks ridership it needs to prosper.

    Again, enjoyed traveling with you as always. Two comments: #1. Very surprised but pleased that most instructions and signs were also in English. I would not have thought that would have prevalent over another other additional language. And #2. And this was weird to strike me, but I noticed in the whole trip that almost 100% of the cars, trucks, vans, and vehicles were facing outwards--most all would have had to be backed in. Every car parked beside or in front of a building was facing outward--did not see many facing the building, like most of us would pull in and then back out. Maybe this is a Japanese custom? And also like some other commenters stated, it is indeed refreshing to not see all of the nasty graffiti splashed everywhere like in the US and in Europe. And we Americans think we are civilized.

    • @drbjapan
      @drbjapan 11 месяцев назад

      Most back their cars in the parking stalls in the interest of safety. Can be very heavy traffic and tight spaces. Backing the car out into traffic with limited visibility much more dangerous than pulling out forward. Lived in Japan for quite a few years and now continue backing into parking spots even though I’m in the U.S. Feels so much safer.

    • @j134679
      @j134679 11 месяцев назад

      Back parking is always safer especially in pedestrian-heavy areas like Japanese cities. In Japan, minor neighborhood roads do not have sidewalks at all. The whole road is pedestrian priority. You do not honk at anyone walking in the middle of those roads. This way of parking will also make it easier for you to get out into these roads.

    As far as I know, the only major advantage of the green car is the reserved seats -- it's a bit difficult to explain, but basically, in green cars, there are ONLY reserved seats. In other non-green cars that offer reserved seats, passengers are allowed to sit there without a reservation as well, but will be subject to the "stoplight system." Basically, there'll be green, yellow, and red LEDs on the back of each seat; if the green LED is lit, that means the seat is not reserved at the moment and you're free to sit there. If it's yellow, that means a passenger with that seat reserved will be getting on at the next stop, so if you're sitting there, you should probably get ready to move. And if it's red, that means it's reserved now, and you shouldn't sit there unless you're the one with the reservation.

    Good grief, is Japan EVER going to stop with the muzzles?! Three years later, now KNOWING it useless in blocking aerosols, and people are STILL wearing a useless mask on their faces. It's extraordinary how such a technology-focused culture is still doing something so ridiculous.

    • @mattsoca1
      @mattsoca1 Год назад +5

      Your ignorance about Japan is appalling. The Japanese have traditionally worn masks out of a cultural emphasis to think about everyone, by not passing along an infection that would affect the welfare of other people. Moreover, your lack of intelligence is further compounded by the stupid statement that masks are useless. If this were the case, physicians would not need to wear masks when treating patients, such as in surgery. But looking at the numbers alone. Since the start of the pandemic, the infection rate by country has been lower in Japan than the US. And more importantly, per 100,000 population, more than 6 Americans have died from Covid-19, per Japanese citizen. Considering that among the major countries of the world, Japan has more, as well as older seniors than anyone else, this is an amazing statistic that strongly supports whatever medical restrictions they used to combat Covid-19. Incidentally, I am a retired physician who now lives in Japan doing research.

      The people of Japan didn't start wearing masks during tbe pandemic. They have been wearing them 24/7 365 for decades. It's a normal, accepted part of their culture. The good news is: YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO TO JAPAN.

      They also don't have people with anger management issues spouting off about things they don't understand that's none of their business.

      In Japan, it's common for many people to wear masks during the winter when colds are prevalent and in the spring when hay fever is widespread. This practice stems from the consideration of not spreading germs to others and avoiding projecting saliva when coughing. Above all, many Japanese people prioritize showing respect to others and being mindful of not causing inconvenience. It's different from our countries, isn't it? 😂
