The refill tube (Hose going into the overflow valve) doesn't fill up the tank. It actually fills the bowl. It needs to place at least enough water as needed to cover the hole before the trap (aka poop hole) the valve actually releases water at two points. Around the valve and into the refill tube. The ratio is predetermined by the valve but some are adjustable.
Great video! I now understand the flushing part, but the confusing part for me now is the float. I don't really get how it actually stops water from pumping in
From my understanding, the force of the float's buoyancy is what makes it work. You can see that as it rises along with the water, it also moves the stick attached to it (2:59). The other end of the stick is attached to a small bit of plastic poking out underneath the cap. Once that bit reaches a mostly 90° angle, it acts as a closed lever, physically blocking the water from exiting the little black tube. The stick is threaded which allows you to change the height of water needed to fully stop the water by screwing it. Clockwise = more water needed and counter-clockwise = less water needed. Hope this helps!
@@Jhanados THANK YOU FOR THIS EXPLANATION. My stick was all the way clockwise, and my bowl was overflowing. But rotating my stick a bit counter clockwise seems to prevent the overflowing.
Where does the water come from that fills the tank (not down into the bowl via the black flow tube)? Does it come from a separate place that you didn't mention? Inquiring minds want to know!
Thank you. Very nice video. The water tube dropped down from where it should have been pouring. I knew it didnt just lay in the water but was unsure of where it went.
I have fixed my fill valve recently replaced the old one which had some issues, but there is constant sound coming in the tank as if the fill valve is filing the water in tank. Can I know what am I doing wrong, also is there any height adjustment that I have to do with the fill valve, I mean at what height I am supposed to put the fill valve in the tank?
I do not have a valve like that tried taking a picture but this new phone won't let me so both. I just have a hose that hooks to a tube by where the drain flap comes up? How do I fix that, water shuts off but very little goes in the bowl & tank is only half full
I have PTSD from a toilet overflowing for 3 hours leaking through my roof and spraying out of my ceiling fan destroying electronics and nearly starting an electric fire. At least I have an idea on how to stop it...
So all the water that comes into the tank does so via the refill tube? In my toilet, it looks like water also enters the tank from vents at the base of the flush valve... am I confused?
That’s my question. I understand everything but this. I believe the bowl fills from the hose shooting in the tube and the tank fills from these vents. I need more water in the bowl, but raising the level just makes it go into the overflow and never lifts float to shut off. It’s at the max level now. I think my only option is making the overflow tube longer.

Black for older toilets that need more water to fill the tank, blue for approx. 1.6 gallons of water, and the red Pro45/white is for how much water?
I was wondering the same thing . I just replaced my toilet fill valve. On my new Fluidmaster fill valve, there are small outlets surrounding the bottom of it where water flows out to fill the toilet tank. Simultaneously, water flows from the fill valve to the overflow tube through a hose to fill the toilet bowl.
@@rdlu9966 okay that clears up my confusion. The fill valve doesn’t just send water to the overflow valve. Now I’m curious, though. My toilet does not have that tiny tube that stretches from the fill valve to the overflow valve, yet everything works fine. At least, I think everything works fine lol
Our loo is funky. It has a strange flapper/fill pipe integrated into a huge block of plastic and the whole thing tilts back when you flush. We tried replacing it with standard works but it will not accept a regular flapper. Educational, nonetheless.
Water level is dropping every few minutes, water is reaching until overflow tube and in few seconds it slowly drops down and it is filling again. Do you think flapper is not closing it properly?
Wow this helped me today damn toilet upstairs was leaking to ceiling downstairs and the clip was installed WRONG . Wow now I can open my beer and breathe
What if the toilet tank is filling up while the flapper is trying to close? Mine does that and the flapper never has a chance to cover the seat unless I stop the refill valve wait till the flapper goes does and then I let off the refill and it works perfectly
@@stephensnell1379 unfortunately, it's not. Adhesive refers to things that make others stick to them, cohesive are things that stick to themselves. Water is cohesive.

This video is incorrect and should be taken down. Water from the fill valve goes to 2 place. The water that flows through the tube into the overflow tube at the top of the flush valve refills the BOWL, not the tank. The tank is refilled by water which comes out of the base of the fill valve.
Been watching videos on fixing the toilet flush but you're the only to explain it in a detailed manner that is not too complicated. Thank you!

I just installed a new one. My version the water that goes into the tank comes from the lower part of the float tube, near the base.
Very well explained to make things simple for someone who's very not technical like myself LOL. Thank you!

This is EXACTLY what I wanted!!!!! Thank you soooooooooo much for uploading this!!!!
I'm still confused about the piece that goes into that pipe
It pour enough amount of water into the bowl I guess. So that water level rises and stops the terrible smell coming from the drain pipe.
Omg my over flow valve was no longer connected. Thanks so much!!
Thank you Landmark, this video saved me from flooding my upstairs bathroom. Very cool

Thanks to you, I just fixed the problem with my toilet tank.😊
What causes ghost “auto-mini-flushes”?
Is it because the float is too loose and moving around too much?
my toilet chain snapped around the top end so i had to open it up and pull it manually. very helpful video! 10/10

One thing I think you should include, "Then things go wrong" show example on failed structures and lessons learned by them.
This was an amazing explanation
What I don't get is how the water going in the tube fills up the bowl and the tank at the same time.
The skinny tube is only filling up the actual bowl. The water that fills the tank is at the base of the fill valve.
also my toilet doesnt have that red cap and squirts water out is that fine

I thought tank level was supposed to be 1in under overflow valve height?

my toilet has this floating part in it
Water is COhesive, meaning the water molecules are attracted to each other. Gravity pulls*, the water pushes*
And here I am trying to learn the anatomy of a toilet because somethings wrong with the float and the overflow wont stop hm 🤔

Nothing like the inside of the cistern used in UK toilets...
And in the UK all the flushing action happens inside the object which is called a Siphon (even this will leak in time)

Adhesive was the wrong word, you were looking for cohesive.
