In Frank Gambale's guitar solos, when I close my eyes and crank it up, I could swear I'm hearing the late, great Tommy Bolin from his work on Billy Cobham's astoundingly brilliant album, "Spectrum" and especially the perfection of "Stratus". At only 22 years old, Tommy's incredible guitar work on that album where he played with three great legends, those being Billy Cobham, Jon Hammer, and Leland Sklar is beyond brilliant! The entire "Spectrum" album was made in less than 2 days, all tracks on the album are either 1st or 2nd takes. There were no retakes, no engineer's soundboard trickery, and certainly no messing around with anything that wasn't played live in the New York studio. Tommy shredded it from top to bottom and all of it was just off the top of his head as there wasn't sheet music or tablature for any of the guitar work!!! Gambale is a brilliant musician, but Tommy went there first, to show the way!
The bit that creases me up is when you get the keyboard, guitar and vocalist doing the unison scat lines just before the end with spot on precision. What superb musicianship.
