Remember watching Billy Cobhams drum clinic in the 80s. Used his drums as an instrument rather than just a rythym backdrop. Great technique and must go down as one of the best drummers of all time.
I remember when this album came out I wore it out just like Romantic Warrior and Enigmatic Ocean and the Tony Williams Lifetime album with Allan Holdsworth. WHat a time in music. I still play those riffs on guitar to this day. And my former guitar teacher Jon Scofield at his best. 8)
Pay attention boys and girls, did you see Billy playing double bass? Listen at those explosive quads!!!!!!! Sounds like he's shooting the kit with two uzi's...Cobham the god.
He is fantastic. A total baddass. In his Interview in the latest Jaco movie he said Joe Zawanol played him some of this new guy Jaco’s record that Jaco gave to Joe. He said he decided to take George Duke up on his offer to play rather than get the boot from Joe cause he could tell Joe wanted Jaco in Weather Report. So we get this amazing band (Duke, Cobham, Johnson and Schofield) from the fallout of Jaco coming to town. Lucky us.
I saw this band way back when and they were the OPENING act. Amazing evening. Of course next up was Shakti with L.Shankar Zakir Husain and John M. Then to close was Weather Report with Jaco before he was wasted. At the end. Billy took over the drums. Alphonso join Jaco on basses and McLaughlin join Wayne and Joe out front. I still pinch myself that that really happened.
Bill Cobham is the baddest drummer ever! I now see that he is not only a pioneer but has also influenced other greats like Dennis Chambers, Steve Ferrone, and Travis Barker, to name a few! In a word, remarkable! And, George Duke is just masterful, as always! RIP - Mr. Duke. Great music never dies!
Billy was at his peak in the 75/76 with this group,- i actually got the same special Fibes snare drume and added some animal drum skin in order to get a more short high Funk kick sound out of it together with a heavy Premiere drum set ( 6"- dowm to 26" big bas drum all singel skin to combine it with heavy sound. Billy was deffently "the man" evry Funk drummer was looking up to worldwide.
Billy Cobham was always a monster on the drums. There's a great divide in drumming between the different styles, i.e., rock, jazz, R&B, reggae, etc. But they all agree that Bill Cobham is great.
one of the sweetest parts of this song is the Alphonso solo and George peppering those keys behind him....such a sweet, dreamy sound! And oh yeah....BILLY RIPPED IT!!!!!!
I've seen Billy Cobham Live in the early 80's. Small smoky club in Ft Lauderdale, 4 piece band. To describe the show would be like this: "Image taking a space ship and traveling the galaxy for 2 hrs...then returning to earth!" that's what it was like (and i wasn't even high)....LOL!
The power of these funk masters together is one the almost indescrible! notice also some of the most underated. Billy Cobham and George Duke WOW! these guys tear the roof off the sucka. Brilliant!!
There is so much groove right here, man I wish i was alive to see them all play together. you just can't go wrong with the sweet sound of jazz/rock/funk all put together.
Love this song! What memories. I listened and learned from this album. Jon was a great teacher a couple of years after this. We just traded solos. SO much fun! Now, I'm a heavy metal singer. lol!
All hands for the audio guy in this time who recorded this! F*cking Brilliant! Even today this is a very hard thing to get. When the audio technician has a pony tail we normally walk out. Please do me a response if you have the same experience (exept when you're a pony tail ;-)
What a lineup for Gods sake! Alphonso steals some of his own runs from the "Blues March" solo and still rocks it like a champ. Billy inspired to me to start playing drums Thanks for uploading this stuff, BTW Regards
Man, check that left handed ride! Way before carter beauford and DMB. I remember learning that finger technique from a great teacher I had in Nashville when I was about 12. Pinch the stick between your thumb and first knuckle of your index finger, creating a fulcrum, and drive the stick into the drumhead with with your other fingers. Very comfortable and effecient way to create speed. You can snap the wrists for accents and power strokes.
Juicy is the correct name -it's from the Billy Cobham George Duke Band Live On Tour In Europe album.Listened to it till I wore the grooves out when I was a kid-then bought another...same thing with Magic when it came out few years later
The first fretless bass guitar was made by Bill Wyman in 1961 when he converted an inexpensive Japanese fretted bass by removing the frets.[19][20] The first production fretless bass was the Ampeg AUB-1 introduced in 1966, and Fender introduced a fretless Precision Bass in 1970. Around 1970, Rick Danko from The Band began to use an Ampeg fretless, which he modified with Fender pickups-as heard on the 1971 Cahoots studio album and the Rock of Ages album recorded live in 1971.[21][22] Danko said, "It's a challenge to play fretless because you have to really use your ear."[23]
Why are you people blasting Alfonso Johnson? This was almost 40 years ago! Holy shit, are you that insecure? Enjoy the damn music or don't! What was your contribution tot he fusion scene as a bass player? Check out Al Mustafa the beloved written by Alfonso Johnson. That's some good shit!
Ya Know George Duke Is always the Master Of Moog Minimoog. This is my favorit patch that he created. Jan Hammer is another moog master. Those two makes the minimoog scream sqill and sing.
I'm not talking about the public, I'm talking about musician circles. Jaco had the basic elements of his style together as early as 1971. Also, his solo album was recorded during the autumn of 1975 while his album with Pat Metheny was recorded over the course of 2 days in early December the same year.
I have this strange psychological condition; where whenever I see or hear Billy Cobham play the drums I have the uncontrollable urge to lock myself in a room with a drum kit and never leave... is this normal?!
To the one person who didn't like this I have one question to ask u. Are you tone deaf? I think that is the only way you would not love this it's music at it's best. By all four players. Top marks.
yeah homboy. i had to learn finger technique because of carpel tunnel issues in my wrists and when i learned it i became sickeningly fast. and not to mention my endurance tripled(fingers and some wrist as opposed to wrist and elbows) that was the best thing i could have ever done for my playing.
@davidjohnstephens Many people don't know that Jaco turned his fretted bass into a fretless as early as 1972. That was four years before his self-titled solo-album was released...And to my recollection Alphonso didn't play fretless at that time. And even if he did, the concert where this clip is taken from is at least six months after Alphonso met Jaco, so he had probably learned a lot from watching and hearing Jaco play. Still an awesome player though.
Cobham has the cleanest, hardest single stroke rolls in the world

Finding this album was like finding a rich treasure in a buried chest. So many good songs!
Pay attention boys and girls, did you see Billy playing double bass? Listen at those explosive quads!!!!!!! Sounds like he's shooting the kit with two uzi's...Cobham the god.
This Alphonso Johnson guy is so awesome. Wow!!!! I can't believe I missed out on his music!!! Truly a bass pioneer and legend!!!!
Jeremiah Samuel Same here ...how did I miss out on that guy for so long ? 04:43 ...my PA rig is trying to keep up with his bass hehe ...
Jeremiah Samuel AlphonsoJohnson was one of my HEROES of the bass when I was growing up back in the 70's!
Yeah He was the ONE !
me too

Monster drummer and composer. Cobham is scary intense in these 76 vids.
Scofield's guitar tone is so much more distinctive now.
As I see, was a Gibson L6 with a kind of Di Marzio pickups, great tone, indeed

You knew with that perfect double bass drum, at the intro...not an ordinary drummer!
Billy was at his peak in the 75/76 with this group,- i actually got the same special Fibes snare drume and added some animal drum skin in order to get a more short high Funk kick sound out of it together with a heavy Premiere drum set ( 6"- dowm to 26" big bas drum all singel skin to combine it with heavy sound.

man the bass player kicks ass
I was lucky to see Alphonso (bassist) with Santana in '88....they literally "fed" off each other, and it was one of the BEST shows I've ever seen.....
I've seen Billy Cobham Live in the early 80's.
Small smoky club in Ft Lauderdale, 4 piece band.
To describe the show would be like this:
"Image taking a space ship and traveling the galaxy for 2 hrs...then returning to earth!"
that's what it was like (and i wasn't even high)....LOL!
Alphonso Johnson and Percy Jones are the best and the most under rated weird! Peace from Detroit MI.
Great players. My inspiration. But I wouldn’t consider them underrated. The word gets used too much. They are highly rated.
You're damn right. No one will ever play like Cobham in his early days.... the greatest drummer I ever heard the man is f*^&$% tight and amazing
He' so SICK wit it, man he takes it to another level!
Fusion, baby! That's where it's at!
There are still titans who walk this earth, as we can clearly see and hear.
What a band!
there is no greater drummer then Mr Billy Cobham
T.Higgins
That Drumset is Trippy man. In so many ways.
The power of these funk masters together is one the almost indescrible! notice also some of the most underated. Billy Cobham and George Duke WOW! these guys tear the roof off the sucka. Brilliant!!
Scofield's tone can sound like a keyboard at times. I really like it,
And digging that fretless bass!
Absolute MADNESS!!! Love it, Billy is the master ♥
There is so much groove right here, man I wish i was alive to see them all play together. you just can't go wrong with the sweet sound of jazz/rock/funk all put together.
WHAT a great band one of the all time greats at every instrument truly phenomenal absolute greatness
Of all the band incarnations George D always seemed to bring out the fire in Bill
Love this song! What memories. I listened and learned from this album. Jon was a great teacher a couple of years after this. We just traded solos. SO much fun! Now, I'm a heavy metal singer. lol!

Absolutely stellar performance. Flawless
What a lineup for Gods sake!
Alphonso steals some of his own runs from the "Blues March" solo and still rocks it like a champ.
Billy inspired to me to start playing drums
Thanks for uploading this stuff, BTW

Scofield is fantastic! But yeah man he's got the guitar faces down!
R.I.P. Mr Duke. Thanks for the inspiration!
YeaH I had his Stratus 8 Track. Back then these musicians in this genre were gods and we all know who they were. :D
Love Alphonso Johnsons bass solo.

Geez! No metal drummer can stand to Billy's double kick endurance!
This band is nasty! George Duke playing "Inca Roads" with Zappa is what did it for me.
Noah Bird that's my favorite Zappa song and Zomby Woof a close second.
ECCO COME FARE L'AMORE CON LA MUSICA........

In Alphonso Johnson’s solo at 5:20 he kicks in another (hollower) sound. Is that a pedal or is he flipping his phase switch on his bass?
What a joy to hear the masters!!!
I wore this record out back in the day.
God bless you for putting this on the tube.
Alphonso aveva già suonato con i Weather Report in Misterious Traveller e Tales Spinning.
This is what I call A BAND! Yes, with capital letters. :)
Incredible. Great footage. I love the RE27 on the Kicks, my favorite mic to use! Also great Moog solo. Ridiculous.
Some of the good stuff!!
This is just too dope! Thanks for the upload.
love that clavier sound! duke sorta reminded me of jans playing a little!
Sco's style has changed...especially his tone. But some of his phrasing concepts were already there back then too!
Ya Know George Duke Is always the Master Of Moog Minimoog. This is my favorit patch that he created. Jan Hammer is another moog master. Those two makes the minimoog scream sqill and sing.
Alphonso Johnson = god
Muso's up on stage no bullshit, light shows, dancers, the only pyrotechnics are what these guys are playing awesome!! Music how it should be played!
I'm not talking about the public, I'm talking about musician circles. Jaco had the basic elements of his style together as early as 1971. I have this strange psychological condition; where whenever I see or hear Billy Cobham play the drums I have the uncontrollable urge to lock myself in a room with a drum kit and never leave... is this normal?!

Alphonso 🎼🎶🌐thank you 🎼🎶✌❤😁

Cobham = wow!
Jaco was well known in musician circles several years before he released his debut album.
So nice !
Love This Tune
Nuf Luv Shown
Family TingZ
Hey those crazy yellow toms look a bit like Swiss mountain horns! I wonder if they were especially for Montreaux...
Thanks so much
Cobham also had his drums synched with a Moog (visible during his solo on this tune). Is there video of Frankenstein Goes to the Disco?
idolo duke
idolos todos
Thank you a lot
To the one person who didn't like this I have one question to ask u. Are you tone deaf? I think that is the only way you would not love this it's music at it's best. By all four players. Top marks.
I don't know if theres a video for frankenstein gose to disco but I'd love to see billy sync up with the minimoog synth sample and hold arpeggiator.
You and I both....inexplicable
Hey, I didn't know John Cleese played guitar.
you can find this song in flora purim's 1978 album.
What is the album called 🤔, I'd like to know !!!
that’s what she said:
ruclips.net/video/y_PAbKfzjQw/видео.html
R.I.P. George Duke
William 'Happy Feet' Cobham
John scofield...! With a mustache in his youth! Lol
Cold
Before Jaco was on the scene too, that means they're his 'own' licks,as Jaco only released his debut album the same year this video was made :-)
F
whhooooo now George Duke and Jan hammer can tear up the minimooh!!!!!
Thanks a lot
@gentillyguy1 ... don't think there's video of that... but I'm on a mission to look for other footage of this band.
I know bob moog is proud of them. RIP Bob Moog
what was Billy Cobham was saying to his drum tech
I see two Space Echo's at George's left hand on the left Space Echo there's a Mutron Bi-Phase what sits on the right Space Echo?
The way Billy and Scofield come back in toghether at 3:43 spells the matter
BTW....that is the wrong title name for this song. It is from Billy Cobhams majic LP.
I believe it is called...."on a magic carpet ride!"
yeah homboy. i had to learn finger technique because of carpel tunnel issues in my wrists and when i learned it i became sickeningly fast. and not to mention my endurance tripled(fingers and some wrist as opposed to wrist and elbows) that was the best thing i could have ever done for my playing.

@jeckymia Yes, Mini Moog, and the other one next to it is an ARP Odyssey MKI 2800.
do you know the other keybords he had on here??? Especially the little device he used on Almustafa????
