@TroubadourTravels hmm, there are a couple of playlists for book formatting on my channel, and that pretty much exhausts all my knowledge of the subject.
@@self-publishinghelp8596 well you certainly have more of a grip on this subject than anyone else I have come across since using apache years now. It has also cost me money getting done what I could of done had I came across you earlier. Perhaps you could send me what other videos you have in that wonderful knowledge base you have. Sorry if I seem anxious. I mean my books already self published on Kindle, but I do have contacts who would like personally to purchase a copy, rather than the expensive process of Amazon, and shipping costs. So I would have my book printed locally.
Sure thing. Sorry, didn’t see this comment till now. Here’s the link to the playlist for paperback formatting. ruclips.net/p/PL1eKTDA7RnMMsIbiVyptVKyluzYuKMyeN&si=qRlw-9q0eaVdfWUb
Thank you very much for a great presentation of Open Office Writer. Do you know if there is any feature in this program that allows a double spread of pages on the screen, if I would like to make a newspaper? and would like to see what it will look like at once? if you understand what I mean :)
Hey, how goes thing with you? how is the book selling? well, I hope. I sold my first couple of books so far. other than that its pretty quiet I think I need to advertise it. any suggestions?
Hello Mystical Unicorn: Congratulations! That's so exciting to see those sales pop up. Unfortunately, I'm not the right person to tell you anything about marketing as, no, I can't claim that my books are selling, either. ;-) However, one thing I did notice is that I couldn't find the Amazon link (or wherever you're selling your book) on your videos on your RUclips. I tried looking for your book by title on Amazon, and I couldn't find that either because there were too many other books with the same or similar titles. So, just a suggestion: post the link to the book on Amazon wherever you can so interested people can find it. That's a start. What other social media sites do you use? Are you on Facebook? There are umpteen thousand writer's groups you could join as a way of networking and getting advice. (You don't have to join all umpteen thousand, of course. You could join ones specific to your genre. Just type some key words into the search bar.) I'm not up on all the socials. I'm not on Instagram, TikTok, even Twitter, as, well, to be honest, I just don't like them. But wherever you think you'd have success promoting, you could try joining. And of course, you can always pay for advertising and marketing if you choose to go that route. For me, writing is a wonderful hobby, and book sales are a nice bonus when they happen. But if you'd like to be more serious about it than I am, there's a lot of info online about how to market. Just let the buyer beware as scams abound as they do everywhere. Well, good luck. All the best!
Hello. I'm trying to create a manuscript and my text doesn't always reach the last line in the margin. Often if the next paragraph doesn't have space, it will skip a chunk of empty space and continue on the next page, leaving the blank space at the bottom of a few lines, maybe two or three most. Do I need text to come down to the same length on every page? If so is there a way to set that up automatically? Hopefully I am explaining clearly enough.
I’m not sure what the issue would be. Normally, the text comes down to the margin setting. Do you have something funky set for line spacing? Automatic space after paragraph or something? Maybe just check your line spacing under “paragraph,” and see what it says. The extra space probably isn’t a huge deal if it’s just in manuscript form and not the final book formatting.
@@self-publishinghelp8596 I am probably not explaining well. Instead of a paragraph starting at the end of the page and continuing onto the next page, if the entire paragraph doesn't fit in the space left at the bottom, it doesn't put any of it there, it just puts the entire paragraph at the start of the next page. For example instead of : (Page 1) Mary had a little lamb. This lamb had a fleece as white (page break - Page 2) as snow and everywhere that Mary went the lamb was sure to go. It looks like this: (Page 1) Mary had a little lamb. (Empty line) (page break - page 2) This lamb had a fleece as white as snow and everywhere that Mary went the lamb was sure to go.
@@jempathy8814 Sorry for not replying. RUclips wasn't showing me this comment. I've never run into this issue before. Did you end up finding a solution? I did a quick google search, and found a user forum where someone was describing your problem. These looked like the most relevant answers to me: "I think that you were editing the settings of each paragraph. If you right click in the paragraph, select Edit paragraph style at the bottom of the context menu." "I understand this has been solved, however I found this thread while searching for a different issue involving automatic jumps after EACH paragraph. One thing I found that worked was going to INSERT> MANUAL BREAK> LINE BREAK. I discovered that for some reason "page break" had been selected. This was causing me problems. I figure it bears posting since other people may not find the solution here to be their fix. Thanks!"
Is there also a setting where you can set the amount of space you want in front of a sentence before you start a new paragraph? Now I use 3 x spacebar but i actually want a slightly larger gap. If i use 4x spacebar the program makes a bigger gap (more like 6x spacebar) automatically (it is still less than if I would use the TAB key). Hope you understand my question, not a native English speaker myself.
Even if I do 3 x spacebar it just is not consistent together with the 'justified' alignment. So is there a way to set that space somewhere? :) and maybe a key for it that writers use?
Hi, good question. I should have included that in a video. Yes, in Open Office, left click on "format." Choose "paragraph" from the drop down bar. Find "first line." Increase the number from zero to whatever you like. I typically go with .5 or .6. Hit "OK." Now, every time you hit enter for a new paragraph, your first line will be automatically indented to a consistent space, and you don't have to worry about "tab" or the space bar. Great feature of the program.
Hard to know. They really do have a mind of their own sometimes, don’t they? I’d just experiment till it goes away. Can you kill the bolding entirely? If so, what happens if you type the line you want bolded in another document and copy and paste into the right one? That kind of thing. I’d try a few different experiments till something works. Good luck. Hope you solve it. Programs can be very frustrating when they don’t do what they’re asked.
@@self-publishinghelp8596 I found the 'bold' control on the right side. Not sure why they duplicated the button on top. But the right side button works ! Someone also told me "Libre" is better and also free.
hello tho this may help you can change measurements by going tools options general you can change to Centimetres as yours was in inches I think? as you prefer them.
Yes, you can work in either one. Depending on your country as to which measuring system you're more familiar with. I'm Canadian, so bilingual in both. Or just confused in both. :)
@@self-publishinghelp8596 Thank you very much. Another problem. I did an export test but I'm not sure if I did it right. I'm wondering if after I do an export pdf all I have to do is just upload the manuscript to KDP?

You bet. Very valuable tool. Under "file," scroll down to "page preview," and you can see the whole page, two pages at a time.

For a regular document, how do I make a two-page display onto one page? Thanks!
Increase the size percentage at the bottom of the screen.
I have a question. Is it possible to change the default fonts to one you want. Like I prefer Garamand.
I’ve never found a way to change default fonts. I just change them manually. You’d have to ask someone with more expertise than I have. Good luck!

No, I haven’t. From one computer to another, my fonts may change if I don’t have the same fonts downloaded. That’s about all.
