In areas where natural regeneration isn’t possible, planting trees for forest fire recovery helps restore biodiversity habitat, helps communities rebuild their lives, restores vital ecosystem services, and more. During her tenure as a professional tree planter, One Tree Planted’s Stephanie Sinclair has planted nearly half a million trees across Canada. From planting in areas that have been previously deforested, to projects in local communities, to replanting forests that have been devastated by insect infestations, she has done it all.
But the most impactful projects have always involved planting trees for forest fire recovery. She found there was no getting used to seeing the damage that was caused by forest fires, which are increasing in size and frequency due to climate change. While restoring lands that forest fires have degraded, she noticed that the first thing to grow back is always wildflowers. The wildflowers were the first sign of hope that something wonderful would be able to grow, that with careful planting and care, a healthy, native forest might return.
