Don't blame the mass dying of spruce on 'climate warming/changes'; as you said yourself, it was NOT a natural area for spruce to grow, especially as a monoculture! This mass dying event was a blessing in disguise, as an artificial monoculture was destroyed and some other trees apart from spruce got chance to grow naturally. Pollution, and trash are a real problem, but blaming many events on climate change is logically and scientifically wrong. As I understood, tree species now were planted that used to grow over there 500 years ago. So how is it related to climate change? Very political, not scientific, or did I misunderstand something?
"Even though we´re surrounded by thousands of dead trees, we´re not standinng in a dead forest." Yes, you said it twice already but it´s worth mentioning over and over. This is a teaching at the heart of what people need to understand about the processes of wild life. Life is everywhere! Thank you, well said.
These spruce trees have been living on borrowed time all along, but very sad to see them die all at the same time. Good job on accelerating the natural restoration
Thank you for replanting this forest, I have always worked in forestry as a harvester and we always make sure that every tree we cut has at least 2-3 trees for every 1 tree we cut and I at least leave creeks and beds for animals I don’t touch those place again thank you for replanting this forest

Biodiversity is such an important part of a healthy ecosystem! Thanks for making sure that the forest will have a more robust defence against the bugs and humans 🐛
Take care of the few older trees that are left as they are very important too to combat the bark beetle in the future. A forest of mixed age trees is just as important as mixed species to be resilient because the bark beetle mostly kills trees when they are a certain age.
Interestingly when native south American shamen were consulted they actually said the beetle was helping to restore the ecosystem, the spruce bark beetle is helping nature heal
What have you done, for example? And before you ask,i dont even mean it as it sounds. All good intentions😊Its the thing, you dont know, what you can do,if you focus on one thing or theme. I was restoring a trout stream spawning areas before the season, demolishing beaver dams etc,and it was so upliftng to see a river come to life, hundreds of offsprings in the river.Unfortunately, the river was destroyed due to a animal farming accident right at the start of the stream and about 15000dead trout were gathered from the stream, not counting those finger long offsprings. But the nature takes over anyway,2 years later there was life on the spawning grounds once again😊
I went camping in Harz region last year and it was indeed shocking how fast this ecosystem had collapsed. Amazing to see you guys are doing something about it, proud to be a backer ❤️
So cool! Very interesting point about it NOT being a dead forest ... fascinating to learn about all the life in this tree graveyard. Keep up the amazing work 🌳💪💚
You and mossy earth are my favorite environment youtube channels right now, instead of talking about the effects of global warming you guys actually go out their an solve environmental issues on a small and large scale
I basically grew up in that forest. in a sense. It's so near by the area I grew up, we went there multiple times every weekend in the summer. I absolutly remember the dense trees, the biodiversity. Seeing it now is soo, soo shoking. it really hurts.
Yeah, we feel you. 😔 It is really devastating to see what's happening in the Harz. Partnering up with the Harz National Park and supporting their efforts to make the forest more resilient give us hope for a better future for this region. 🌱🌳
I love this! I have a personal mission to rewild urban spaces. I encourage everyone I know to craft water features in their yards. I will also help people who need it. Adding water features like small ponds creates spaces for animals. Birds, frogs, and small mammals will use yard ponds as sources of water. When drought comes, amphibians use it to breed, and small prey draws raptors and provides food for foxes. Recently, a local wetland dried during an extremely hot summer , and we found a turtle trying to get through to our pond. We helped him out, and he/she spent the hot season with us. When the rains came and the wetlands refilled, we returned him to his natural environment. Build a pond create an ecosystem.
That is fantastic! It's so important that we do our share and spread the word! Thanks for sharing it here, as well! 💚 Would you say that having similar water features on the balcony would make sense as well? Clearly, only birds and insects would be able to use them...
@planet-wild All water sources help in dry times, it is best if you also have plants around them to provide shelter moving water stays cleaner. Low balconies where I live would probably get small tree frogs as well.
Thank you for this important work! I live on the countryside, but I get so happy everytime I hear some cityfolk talking sense :D But really, imagine (as I guess you have already done) what could be achived with our cities! There is sooo much space there to rewild, inviting animals and plants to co-exist, and it would only bring benefits also to humans.
You may want to fence the areas that are planted, if the pressure from deer etc is too high, as they will eat all the new trees. Also keep in mind, that these old plantations where often drained, so restoring the natural streams/hrodrology etc can also be key. Mossy Earth may have some experience from Scotland and Eastern Europe.
Great work! 🌳🌲🌳 It was not mentioned or visible in the video, but I hope enough of the dead wood is left there among the new plantings because it is crucial for a healthy ecosystem and in turn it will make the forest more resilient to climate change.
Also to combat the bark beetle it has been proven that a natural forest with a diversity of ages in the trees is really important as they are most vulnerable in a certain age a norwegian study showed. If a forest is comprised of trees that all have the same age it is much more vulnerable at a point in time when the bark beetle can kill them all instead of just a section.
I really like the video, and I love their mission. But what has to be said here is that the commune that manages the Harzer national park could do much more to flourish the forest again. I haven’t seen any indication that the commune does anything for the forest while hiking there 3 weeks ago
I wasn't aware of this lage scale disaster in my own country. Damage caused by drought and bark beetle yes but not this impact here. I noticed tree species disussions - most of the native ones missed the future requirements.

It is interesting that the spruce bark beetle cleared out the monoculture, thats why the native South American shamen brought in to consult on reforestation said they are a blessing
@mffmYT im super confused I'm talking about German Spruce Beetles not Alaskan Birch Trees I am glad to hear you had a good trip tho Alaska is beautiful
I mean the spruce bark beetle is the most damaging insect in Alaska's forests. The difference is that the forrests are a mixed spruce forests / birch - 50% is still green.

I might be interesting to check out the Bavarian forest, as it can show how this forest will look in a few years. It shows how the "dead" forest heals over time
Greetings from the forest of Biscay. If you dont quit the down part and the roots of the fallen tree it has no sense to plant a new one near it, where the roots start to rotten and will affect the development of the young one. You can also paint the base of the tree for ants and other animals to dont climb up ad remain healthy. Nice work dude we have to change this together. Jo ta ke, Irabazi arte.
Please guys make you confident with the recreation and rebirth of the national park of Bavaria. The forest died totally. Where the responsables picked up the wood to sell nothing is growing until today. On the other part, where only the necessary was fine the forest recovered itself very nice.
Hey! I liked the video :) Just one thing: 6:41 The beech you showed (Fagus ferrugina?? ) is none that grows here. The only beech growing species over here is Fagus sylvatica (Rot-Buche in german, So thats probably where the mistake comes from). She is the 'strongest' tree when it comes to dominate a forest - over a long time
@@planet-wild i live fairly close to the harz. I study forest ecology in Göttingen. One of the 3 or 4 university-locations in Germany, to study smth like that
This is great. Spruce has its place in a forest, true. But not in monocultures, and it needs to be managed some places so it doesn't take over and push out other types of trees that can grow slower. Since spruce grow so fast, and create a lot of shade that kill other trees and plants on the forest floor. Mixed forests is the future.
Well done Planet Wild!! :) Thank you for doing your research on polyculture vs monoculture prior to planting. How fortuitous to have all that decaying wood and standing snags. It should provide a fantastic food for saprophytic fungi and habitat for diverse species, including birds of prey. It should also increase your fungi-to-bacteria ratio significantly, which is usually a sign of a mature forest successional stage. Since this area was a monoculture for so long, please make sure to inoculate with relevant mycorrhizal species to facilitate the networking relationships necessary to support the forest, especially during times of drought and stress. There are water-soluble mycorrhizal spore mixtures which can be applied well after planting. All the best. Cheers.
Were the trees you planted pre-inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi? If not, would you please consider doing this for future plantings? Thanks again for the amazing work you do :)
Love this kind of work. Do you leave the dead trees or chip them. It costs a bit to buy wood chip in Australia..was free just a few years ago. Do you guys make swales or other kinds of water holding structures? Seeing as we are on the way to a warmer drier climate. I see this done in India. Building ponds ect to give moisture to plants. Some projects, the guys plant the trees and leave them to grow. Sadly they die as it's too dry now. Keep up the good work.
The resilience of nature amazes me profoundly and that also brings so much hope to such heartbreaking changes. Thank you again planetwild community! So much looking forward to see the changes in Harz!💖🌱💖
Thank you for everything you and your group are doing; for your country, for the animals and for our planet. The way you make your videos they clear in communicating the problems and visually exciting to watch. I hope, as a former educator that you are getting the word out to all schools about your videos. Perhaps a, “ If you are sharing these videos with your schools show us on social media and we will bring in the local animal rehab group for a visit to your school.” Free PR, free PR for rescue groups and better more engaging education. With a appropriate opportunity to help if your a young person. I don’t know if you have it already ( perhaps a retired science teacher volunteer could create) but a natural tie in of lesson plans and a synopsis for the teachers would be cool. Also a tie in for young people volunteer opportunities would be a great project for a team of young people to work on as a school or college project that could be done for a grade.
You have bought me into this. A beautiful concept. I would love to start it here in my country (Pakistan). Let's hope it turns into a global movement. Great job planet wild. Keep it up. Please don't forget to send its update videos.
Thanks for supporting our efforts in our mission. We'll update the findings of this project soon. Consider subscribing to our channel and stay tuned with us 💚🌲
There's still debate whether replanting or natural regrowth are better. A similar situation occurrred since the 1990s in the Bohemian forest, Bavarian Forest in Germany and adjacent, still bigger Šumava in Czechia. These areas still need time to recover, but they also had those spruce monocultures. Now it's increasingly mixing up with rowan, ash, beech, maple, fir. But it's still a rather barren landscape to the eye, just the dead trees have decayed meanwhile.
Not only as a resident of the closest big city of the Harz mountains, I appreciate your efforts and hard work. I have seen the peak of this drought and its devastating consequences for the area on a hike in summer 2022. Apart from joining as a member, I 'd like to join the community physically... hoping you welcome this kind of support as well.
Thank you so much for the support and encouragement! 💚While we'd love to have you join us in person, we unfortunately can't offer that option right now - not all the missions are fitted for community / volunteer work and we don't have any such mission coming up, where it would be possible. Other ways to support our rewilding efforts right now - apart from becoming a Planet Wild member - is to spread the word about our missions. By sharing our videos with your friends, family, and colleagues, you can help us grow our community and make an even bigger impact. The more people join us, the bigger our impact will be. 💚
I went on a bike ride through the Harz last year and it was shocking to see all the dead trees since I always only knew it from my childhood and it looked so different, so green. Thank you for recovering the real, more resilient Harz forest.
Bäume zu pflanzen und zu vermehren sollte jedem Menschen mit Landbesitz möglich sein, aber auch öffentliche Ländereien sollten mit Bäumen bepflanzt werden. Es wird wichtig sein für unsere Zukunft.
Great respect for your work. The video in particular will have an impact on all the people who see it. I think that is even more important than planting the trees.
Finally, a Group with a Kind Plan that includes people, not one that glues themselves to the road and makes others mad and in avoidance So, Thank You for actually having a plan instead of a protest. Though I really love the project, the whole point of a national park is to leave it as it is - dead trees and all. Let it take hundreds of years for it to adapt. That's nature taking its course. The dead, fallen trees should be left there as a reminder and valuable habitat for fingi and insects. Reforest everything around the national park first.
We totally agree that nature should be allowed to take its course. Our aim is to provide a helping hand to nature by undoing the processes that humans have initiated and accelerated, which have made it increasingly challenging for nature to function on its own. 💚 And we of course leave the dead trees in place. In fact, it's quite challenging to walk around the area, as there are so, so many. 😁 But, as you say, they have an important role in the ecosystem and therefore will stay where they are, providing a valuable habitat for fungi & insects, and protect saplings. 🌱
@@planet-wild Perfect answer, thanks a lot! It's odd that a mono culture became a national park in the first place. You're doing a great job, keep it up! :)
Traurig!

Many important things don't make it to the mass media. Creating more awareness is one of our goals - we can become agents of change only when we are informed!
The only thing, those dead trees were probably 30-40 years old. Older trees create more habitat that younger ones. It’s good that your replanting but it won’t be the same for a long time still

Hope more success to come, coral reefs or seagrass meadows?
Thanks for your support! 🙏 Stay tuned for more amazing missions like this one. 💚
this is amazing, I'll share this among my peers, truly inspirational.
Thanks for your support! 💚
Spreading the word is super helpful for growing our community and creating even greater impact! 🙏
Thank you, for your hard work. Actions like these really help the environment. Again thank you

Even if this doesn’t work you put a smile on our faces😊❤
They really do! 😊🌎✨
Awesome work-

Thanks! The best way to support our missions is to become a community member. 👉www.planetwild.com
U guys restore faith in humanity! ❤
Thanks for the constant support! 💚🌱🌲

I love your Work.. i joined your funding and im proud to do this. We have to stop talikng about saving our planet we have to start now:)
love you all
Thanks for your support and welcome to your community! Together we can make a difference! 💚
Thank you guys I live near Harz and when I was little I saw the decline of the forest ! And now it’s flurrishing or starting to flurrish
I might be interesting to check out the Bavarian forest, as it can show how this forest will look in a few years. It shows how the "dead" forest heals over time
Thanks for the work!
Thanks for your encouragement 🙏
Thank you guys so much for all of your energy you put in to this! The world needs more humans like you guys… and of course I’m a supporter 😂 🌎🌱❤️
Thanks so much for your words and support! None of this would be possible without our community 💚
Das ist wunderbar was ihr da macht!
Danke Rovan! 🙏
I would really love to be a volunteer but I am in a far away country but I will keep giving you my support I really love nature
Thanks for your willingness to support our rewilding missions! 💚
Brilliant!!!!👏👏👏👏
Thanks 💚
Greetings from the forest of Biscay.
If you dont quit the down part and the roots of the fallen tree it has no sense to plant a new one near it, where the roots start to rotten and will affect the development of the young one.
You can also paint the base of the tree for ants and other animals to dont climb up ad remain healthy.
Nice work dude we have to change this together.
Jo ta ke, Irabazi arte.
Much love to you guys the Harz my home ❤
Thanks! 💚
Please guys make you confident with the recreation and rebirth of the national park of Bavaria. The forest died totally. Where the responsables picked up the wood to sell nothing is growing until today. On the other part, where only the necessary was fine the forest recovered itself very nice.
great, that there are some guys like you out there!
Thank you for doing such great things❤.
Thanks a bunch for the appreciation and support! 💚🌳
Hey! I liked the video :)
Just one thing: 6:41
The beech you showed (Fagus ferrugina?? ) is none that grows here.
The only beech growing species over here is Fagus sylvatica (Rot-Buche in german,
So thats probably where the mistake comes from). She is the 'strongest' tree when it comes to dominate a forest - over a long time
Happy you liked the video and thanks for shedding more light on the beech situation 🙏🏻
Do you live in the Harz?
@@planet-wild i live fairly close to the harz. I study forest ecology in Göttingen. One of the 3 or 4 university-locations in Germany, to study smth like that
Well done everyone!👍
🙏💚
This is great. Spruce has its place in a forest, true. But not in monocultures, and it needs to be managed some places so it doesn't take over and push out other types of trees that can grow slower. Since spruce grow so fast, and create a lot of shade that kill other trees and plants on the forest floor. Mixed forests is the future.
Absolutely! 🌳🌲
Yes, indeed! 🌲🌱🌳
Thanks for your continuous support Shristi! So happy to have you onboard ☺💚
Stay tuned! 😊🌎✨
Consider subscribing to our channel and stay tuned with us 💚🌲
Good work team!
Biodiversity is such an important part of a healthy ecosystem!
@@planet-wild Thanks for your reply, but I don't get it.
Here from Alex’s channel. Glad I found this channel. Let’s goo!!
Welcome to our channel! 👋💚🌳
You guys are doing some amazing work 🫡
🙏 Thanks for your support!
I absolutely love these people
Thanks! And we love that we have such a supporting community! 💚
And we absolutely love you Jaden! 😊🌎✨
I went on a bike ride through the Harz last year and it was shocking to see all the dead trees since I always only knew it from my childhood and it looked so different, so green. Thank you for recovering the real, more resilient Harz forest.
thank you!💗
🌳💚
Thanks guys for saving parts of the world, God bless you guys amen
Great respect for your work. The video in particular will have an impact on all the people who see it. I think that is even more important than planting the trees.
Thanks for the appreciation! We hope to inspire a lot of people through our missions. We're glad it resonates with you 💚
Finally, a Group with a Kind Plan that includes people, not one that glues themselves to the road and makes others mad and in avoidance So, Thank You for actually having a plan instead of a protest. Please plant cold hardy trees. Extreme cold is what is coming as soon as the ocean current stops, as it as many times in the past. Beautiful work, beautifully presented,
🙏 Thanks for your encouragement!
@@planet-wild Thank You! I know it is very hard to have your voice heard above everyone. But keep doing what you do. Do some State Fairs, and have even a static booth with flyers to reach the grassroots people. Believe it or not, the country people farmers will have your back more than many! Also, ask to speak when musicians or bands are doing their local stints, many will support you for a few minutes. Do not forget museums and colleges and schools. All are good places to speak and bring your Good Work to the Forefront!
Be not afraid to GET YOU GOOD WORK out There. Goodness attracts others!
And we of course leave the dead trees in place.
Traurig!
Ty 🙏
why does this have much lower popularity than a f*cking Mukbang video… This world is broken… I'd love to join this movement but I guess I'm pretty isolated considering the fact that I live in Mongolia
🙈
Dankeschön!
Macht ihr das auch im Elbsandsteingebirge? Da wäre ich definitiv dabei! :)
You'll blow up soon, keep it up!
I'm sure they will! 😊🌎✨
A wonderful story, beautifully told. Thank you.
Thanks a bunch for the appreciation! 💚 Glad to hear our mission finds meaning with you 💚😊
Danke euch! :)
i live in germany and didnt even know about his, kinda sad tbh
Many important things don't make it to the mass media. Creating more awareness is one of our goals - we can become agents of change only when we are informed!
God bless you ❤️🙏
Thanks for your feedback and support! 💚
The only thing, those dead trees were probably 30-40 years old. Older trees create more habitat that younger ones. It’s good that your replanting but it won’t be the same for a long time still
They can't plant old trees, can they. You have to start somewhere.
It breaks my heart how Spruce trees are the least populated trees in the world right now because in my Neighborhood there's this Spruce tree that has been taken down after so many years and I miss it and the pine cones everyday 😞
🌲💚
@@planet-wild We also have another one in our neighborhood which is REALLY big. It might be taken down as well soon. :(
Well done!!! Danke schön❤❤❤
Thanks a bunch for the appreciation! 💚
Thanks for your efforts in replanting the Harz forest. Hope you will post a success video in a few years. Always good to ee a before and after.
Thank you so much! I am a Primary School teacher who tries to do his best children to understand the importance of trees, plants and animals.
We'll win! Nature'll win! 🤩
Dead wood is very important. Standing dead wood is vital.
You guys make the best videos. I really love the professionalism with which you do your projects and how you present them.
Thank you!
