Awesome, watching this guitar come together in person, and thoroughly enjoyed watching every second of this video. We couldn't have asked for a better way to launch the new student facilities at Crimson. This whole week with you and Matt was filled with fun and laughter. Thank you so much, when are you coming back...

Do you do acoustic guitars as well. I've been wanting to build a Lexan acoustic electric guitar but am certain it is beyond my skills to do so. I purchased all the materials years ago, thinking I would build one for my daughters 18th birthday/graduation gift. She is now turning 34...

@AprilWilkerson thanks for taking us along! I'm the one trying to start my own woodworking business repurposing and refurbishing items to keep them out of the landfill. Unfortunately, hubby is not really interested. He is however the guitarist in our relationship. (The only musical instrument I play is the stereo...hehehe!)
He could not stop watching this one with me so thanks for that!

Back in the 1960's the legendary guitarist Chet Atkins said in an interview that he believed making a guitar wasn't so hard. He had been playing and making records and working on his guitars for over 10 years at that time. He purchased a kit, an acoustic model, not electric, and began to assemble. He had a workshop so he thought he was prepared. He spent months building and assembling this guitar. When it was completed it was awful. He said his appreciation for true luthiers was enhanced 10 fold. Your neck build looks really good so far. I'm watching this instrument completed! You go, girl! 🎵👍

Awesome video, I hope to one day go and build a guitar at crimson as well after building a number of kits recently.
Just fyi, the reason you first sand all the frets flat is so that they are all level, which enables you to do a better setup in the long run eliminating fret buzz and other problems. After that the frets are rounded off to make the tuning on these frets more consistent.

One tip for you in the future on doing Bow ties to make it easier. Cut out the shape on some fairly thin plywood. Then shape the thin plywood to the exact surface you want. You can then use it as a router template for your thicker pieces. Faster method since the shaping job is on a thinner templace piece. You can use a small chisel plane to clean it up if your template isn't just right. Nice tribute to Nakashima!

You level the frets because if the frets aren't level the string will buzz against frets further down the fingerboard. Imagine you are fretting at the third fret but the 5th fret is higher than the third fret. Afterwards you round over the fret again because you want the string to only contact the fret at one point (ideally the middle). Else you might get fret buzz.

You sand the frets flat so that they are level. If you leave it the way it is when you hammer them in, they will be at different heights. Then you crown them so that only a small amount of each fret pushes on the string, giving you more precision.

  • @dalehallmark9174

When you install the frets they may not be completely in line or level up and down the neck. If they are not perfect they will cause one or several strings to buzz when fretted and not produce a crisp clear note. So you install them, level them and then round them once more.

A few questions, what is the radius of the fretboard, what's the nut width, what is the thickness at the first fret and the top fret, what size fret wire did you use, what pickups are you using and what was the final cost? I know its not a contest, but I do think you beat Matt on the guitar design.... :D
What's more important than that though is that you ended making a musical instrument, learned a lot of new skills as well as an appreciation for the craftsmanship of these instruments, and most of all, looked like you had a LOT of fun in the process too.
