I had a happy accident with my scraps. Ran them through the pasta machine a couple of times, then. The most magical picture showed up. I baked it and framed it.

i watched a video doing this effect but shemissed a couple of steps out,result,mud! thank you so much for the share as i have seen feathers and leaves that have been made using this effect and they are really nice. im getting my clay stach out NOW to try again

Hi Lee, I'm glad to hear you like the technique. The video was shot with all of the steps shown in real time. The only thing we didn't show was placing the demo piece in the oven, but I did discuss baking and demonstrated the trimming a baked sheet. Here are a few tips that individually or combined can result in your clay scraps turning into "mud." 1. Not having enough contrast between light and dark scraps in your snake. 2. Over-twisting the compressed scrap snake (I only twist 7 - 10 times and do this all along the length as shown). 3. Folding the sheet and rolling through the clay machine over and over. After making the drag lines, I only roll it through one time and in the same direction (stripes facing up) through each thickness setting until I get the thickness I want. Any one of these or a combination of them can cause the blending into mud that you describe is happening. I hope this helps. Write me here if I can further assist you with this technique.

Lisa Pavelka I miss Carol and Aleenes. Sad to see that DIY and HGTV no longer have any crafting shows even even though crafting and sewing are both more popular than they've been in decades!
