In today's lesson we're going to talk about the most important stretch in golf... and it's probably not what you think.
The most important stretch in golf is through the rib cage. By properly loading and stretching the rib cage, you can generate a ton of power and club head speed in your golf swing.
I've also got a great drill you can do at home or at the driving range, using a paper plate to increase your rib cage stretch for greater power in your golf swing.

Best power move ever, never explained by other instructors, thanks Zach
Yay! Zach's back!
I think another good trigger to feel (along with the latissimus) is the cinching of the left armpit across the chest on the downswing.
I think that’s a great point.
Very insightful. I noticed that a lot of pros have lattisimus muscles that stick out like wings, even skinny guys have overdeveloped lats. Also, when I have a good ballstriking round, afterwards I feel a tightness in my abs and core. This video helps me understand why. I'll try the paper plate drill. Thanks, Zach!
This is somewhere I need to focus...transmet amputee of left foot, so loading the foot to pivot, to get the torque in the rib cage has been my nemesis.....great lesson on how to get there.
This is a really good video.
Many coaches talk about this move but this is the first time I hear someone actually explain what it does.
Many thanks, Zach.
The lats, just like in body building, is what separates the men from the boys. Those big wings need to be developed because when you've got huge lats, you not only win body building contests but you also can pound a golf ball with such satisfying compression you have a difficult choice to make; spend more time at Gold's working the lats, or hitting the links flexing those lats where the body releases so much power into the ball you feel like the hulk.
I like this a lot. I'll be on the practice range tomorrow trying it out. Thank you.
zack, this really is a great lesson, thnx.
Great insight! Haven’t see your lessons on other RUclips channels 👍👍👍
There is actually a swing aid called MISIG (most important stretch in golf) which sells for the low-low price of $87.00 to stretch and strengthen. I found one a couple weeks ago in a Thrift Store for $3, probably because they didn’t have a clue what it was for. It actually works pretty good but not 87 bucks good. 😂
Nice video Zach! Thanks
Wow, this could truly be the missing link over so many years struggling with early extension, over the top, chicken wing, etc. If I keep that left lat stretched for much longer, it seems like it may help prevent many of these swing faults. I'm definitely going to focus on this at my next visit to the range.
Zach, great info. Seems that this external rotation of the lead hip also puts the lead leg in a great position to then push off the ground for additional speed. What do you think? Thanks
Thanks. I'm a fan of yours and have purchased your material which is great.
Just a question of timing on this.
I think from personal experience it can be counter productive to put yourself in a static position at the top of your backswing and then do moves associated with transition from there.
Isn't this too late?
Shouldn't this move and others, like pressure shift, that are part of transition should really be done in the "backswing" in the sense that the club is still moving away from the ball.
Isn't the stretch that you mention like an elastic band? You start stretching it by a pressure shift and rotating your lead leg. The stretch happens more quickly because your upper body is counter rotating and when it reaches max it acts like a brake and starts the upper body rotating to catch up with the lower body.
Thanks. I appreciate your videos.
Are strong developed lats an advantage IF you're doing it right? I like to work back at the gym. Thanks
top instructor!
Victor seems to squat, sit and externally rotate to really stretch the left side. I think the squat is necessary to fully externally rotate the left leg. Any comments?
Yes exactly right the squat is just him forcing this stretch to the utmost.
@@ZachAllenGolf Thx Zack. Used this video and put it in play in Hilton Head on vacation 4 days ago. Unbelievable distance and effortless power. Not only that, dead straight. It’s what I’ve been search of for 13 years.
Can you relate this to a senior with flexibility issues where this move may cause body problems. Thanks, Tom
It can be challenging with less mobility, however, I would work into it very slowly at home first in front of a mirror, so you can see and feel your rib cage engaging.
Is the ultra loud opening rock music necessary? Otherwise the video is ok…
This is a major reason why women have less power. You have to coil the ribs against the resistance of the lower body.
With today's current climate, you're probably going to get sued by GolfRX for using the name of a product they have. I'm not saying it's right. I'm just saying, watch out.... Certain people think they own certain words.
what are you talking about
Good point I actually have 2 MISIG’s but they only focus on getting the stretch in the backswing, the best application of force would be to get it in the first move down.
