The worst part is that Gretna Police had no jurisdiction on the Crescent City Connection as it connects the City of New Orleans to the City of New Orleans. I personally believe that those officers and those who made this decision should have been brought up on Federal Civil Rights violations. 42 USC 1983 would be justified. Just for those who say I don't know what I am talking about, I am a life-long native of the Greater New Orleans region and have lived in the City of New Orleans since 2011.
One of my nephews just asked me about Katrina yesterday as he was wondering if it was worst than Helene. He was 4 yrs old when Katrina hit. I told him of an incident where some citizens after walking miles to higher ground thought they had found refuge only to be turned away at gun point by it’s citizens. Now I see it was way worse than I originally thought. Was there anyone ever held accountable for this? This is all illegal.
This was a real sad lesson. Every person must be prepared for a disaster to taake care of yourself for at least one week. Have a backpack with your medicines, antiseptic, bandages, freeze dried foods, a water purifier. If you want your pets to survive you will have food for them too. If you do not know your neighbors well, then you might consider including a small weapon.
Nobody should have wasted time or energy stopping “looting.” The government and FEMA absolutely failed New Orleans. Any security should have been used to protect people from violent crimes and peacefully distribute whatever goods were in the city. The stores are insured against this kind of loss so there was no excuse whatsoever to be turning on people just trying to survive.
