This one finally got my off my butt to join your Patreon. Thanks! I'd been overwhelmed by Folklore bookkeeping, so I definitely want to try those house rules.
I hear you. I love Talisman (4ed) and Runebound (3ed) but playingthem RAW (rules as written) I rate them 4-5/10 but with a few house rules I rate them both 9-10/10. Games are meant to be fun, and I do not have enough money to buy a game company and change the RAW for a game, but when I buy a game, I have the power to change the rules (using house rules) to make a game great!
Thx for the vidéo ! Descent v2, I play it like Warhammer quest (random dungeon génération, loot and boss) and autorising multiclassing mid campaign (the first class must be of the good color, not the second). Addint bonus cards for the ennemies (more damage, HP...). Heroquest with a little level UP system and custom characters (for now Drizzt and a Dragon knight).
I recently changed the way I play stuffed fables. If you don’t know it uses a dice and bag system where players draw 5 dice from a bag to perform various actions. Green dice - ranged attack, red dice-melee attack. On top of that skill checks like strength and agility are also completed by colored dice. The problem comes when players are stuck because the don’t draw the dice the need in order to perform the action the want to do. On top of that the dice are only refreshed after enemies activate. You can be stuck unable to attack an enemy waiting for them to activate so that the bag is refreshed and you finally have a chance to draw dice you need. What I did… everyone gets their own bag of colored dice. Two of each color. No more competing over dice if two players are melee. No more wasted turns because your friends used all the red dice to perform melee attacks and you need red dice for a strength test.
I played original Talisman in the 80's. A friend of mine had it along with some of the expansions. It was great. I loved how tight the mechanics were. I didn't play it enough to ever entertain house rules tho. I didn't play it enough period. iirc, he graduated and moved away not long after he got it.
Totally agree with your initial summary; folk need to know what to expect, so I don't impose random houserules in general. When playing solo however, my time is precious and therefore my enjoyment is paramount - houserules away!! Mice and Mystics remains my favourite game, and I certainly houserule it. More items retained between scenarios (any 3, rather than starting + 1), and items not lost on capture (it took long enough to find them that I don't want to waste time finding them again). Nice topic!
Very fun list!! I don't love to house rule, as I think that a game should be able to stand on its own, but with Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress, I felt the need to reduce critical hitsa to 2 damage instead of 3, and otherwise the game would be even easier!
Although I probably wouldn't run it again, I heavily modded the combat in GURPS. Instead of halving a weapon skill for parrying/blocking, I made it a contest of skill. For dodging, I doubled the move score. As it was, it heavily favored offense, so if you went first, you generally won, since a wound would usually cause an instant death spiral. It also made it less likely for highly skilled warriors to lose due to bad luck.
Holy cow, this was great. Time to break out my copy of Runebound and try those cards. I had no idea there was anything out there for it. Very excited! I passed on Heroquest (about everytime I see it I struggle) because the gameplay didn't interest me. I am going to watch some of your videos on it, and a copy might just become my requested birthday present in March! :) Thank you again, this has gotten me really jazzed!
I saw this first in a little window on my phone and thought your draperies were on fire. 😅 Thank you for including Talisman 2nd Edition and the web site. I had a copy with all expansions, laminated and a set of the lead miniatures. It got misplaced and I loved that game because everyone could play it. I have the third edition, but it’s different and doesn’t have the same ‘vibe’ as you said of 2nd Edition.
Ha! Heroquest and Folklore are also my top 2 house-rule games! Heroquest - no monsters on the board, it becomes an RPG, heros can move and search openly until a door is opened or monsters revealed. Folklore - the store is terrible, we reveal 3, 5, or 7 items for sale depending on the size of the town.
Daniel's not the type for goofy jump cuts, but when he said, "Make that change," I expected a Michael Jackson cut. It's like when he missed a perfect big but reference a few videos back. It's okay, it happened in my head. Oh, good video.
Great video Daniel. How do you handle documenting your house rules so you can remember them X months/years later when you play a game you haven't played for a while? I don't find it easy to digest them when they are spread all over the place; a printed sheet from BGG, some notes on a scrap of paper and a downloaded PDF.
I house ruled some minor rules in Scarlet Heroes. Its a great system, but I found the Fray die over powered. I changed it to only apply to monsters that are half a level lower. E.g a 4th level fighter could use Fray die on level two monsters etc.
The fray die is my favorite thing about SH! I love how it makes me feel powerful. That game makes me feel like a protagonist from all the S&S fiction I love to read, able to overcome any challenge at hand. But limiting it a bit would be a good option if you want to play a non S&S version of the game, something a bit more like DCCRPG where your characters aren’t quite as powerful.
@@TheDungeonDive Yeah I totally get that. I do like SH, used it with Basic Fantasy. Ive actually been solo running D&D 4e as well. Its great for tactical combat. I personally think its the best combat rules of any D&D. It feels like a skirmish game.
I had to stop playing SoB after playing for two years. The combat was too predictable. However, before I shifted to Folklore, I got rid of a darkness card that was a guaranteed total party kill. I think it was from the Derelict Ship. If I played SoB again, I would mix different creatures into the threat decks with the hope of making combat interesting.
Couldn't find any information about that super talisman version, would you mind sharing some links? Some of the stuff you mentioned is very interesting but without proper links it's a nightmare to find some of this stuff
Not sure. That was like 15-20 years ago, and Talisman Island has changed a lot. There weren't any rules or anything, just an article with some pictures. Links go dead, especially old links. Pretty sure those were from an old Geo Cities page or something, so probably long dead! Probably one of those internet things you had to be there for. Or maybe try searching the wayback machine! There is a link in the description to Talisman Island, and links to all of the things I've previously covered which has more links. I can't just keep updating and posting every link for people.
In terms of entry level mechanisms offering up good adventure at a family level - Lands of Galzyr, Familiar Tales, Mice & Mystics, Quest for the Lost Pixel, Dungeon Saga Origins (still learning this one, but it seems like "better" HeroQuest), Pauper's Ladder. Maybe slightly more advanced, but still entry level: Destinies, Freelancers, Wanders: Cult of Barnacle Bay.
DSO seems pretty good so far, especially as a "better" HQ. Although HQ will probably always be better just because of all the DIY stuff available. But out of the box, I'd probably recommend DSO over HQ.
@@TheDungeonDive l was looking at DSO and Dungeons of Doria few weeks ago. Picked up DoD and missed on DSO, as I'm trying to not to overextend my collection. Sometimes too many good games appear at the same time.
Another great mini dose on the dive. Glad you found some love for Hero's Quest and its expanding world. Wondering if you have acquired the newly released Forbidden Fortress Hexcrawl and if you will be creating content with that focus ?
I like the game as is. There are a lot of official variants that make the game faster already in the rule book. I will play with one small change, and that’s playing with the full map set up.

You can get it on a shirt!

I really need to look at some of the alternative ways to play Heroquest as, at the moment, I don't think that it is going to stay in my collection?
Check out my playlist for so many suggestions.
Hi Daniel! Do you play Dungeonquest with house rules, or keep it as-is?
Now I play with the new fan expansions I mentioned in my recent video on DungeonQuest.
Cool, missed that part - I'm playing the Swedish original and I'm looking for inspiration, so I'm gonna revisit your video!
