General rule: If dual citizenship is allowed and you are eligible for another passport, just get it. If dual citizenship is not allowed, then you have to debate the pros and cons.

No, there are many cons to having another citizenship:
1. If they have global taxation (like the US) you're fucked
2. If you can't relinquish it (Argentine, Iran, Korea), you're stuck with whatever rules the ruling party decides to implement next year
3. You can be drafted for war (Ukraine, Israel, Armenia)
4. If you enter the country, you will be treated as a local citizen. So if Colombia puts you in prison, then your "real" country (eg. Spain) cannot help you anymore as you are a local citizen in Colombia
100% that’s what I did - married a Brit and eventually got citizenship. So glad I did being an Aussie by birth!

No huge benefits to British citizenship for Irish citizens. Irish citizens can live and work in the UK as well as vote there and run for office. The main benefit to British citizenship is probably access to a better embassy network.
Unless the UK/Ireland change the rules in the future. Getting the British citizenship safeguards against future changes

There is probably more of a benefit for british citizens than Irish ones but still, if it is allowed always get it

Andrew, I think it would be an interesting video and many people would like to know, if you did a video on the best countries to live in, which also give you the easiest and longest lasting travel back to the United States. For example, citizens of the Bahamas can stay up to 6 months in the USA. It might be easier for some people to leave, if they knew how easy it was to come back and visit.
My Preferred Tier A Passport would be Bulgaria even though it is A minus and is considered to be the worst EU Passport. Reason being that they simply leave you alone in that country when you don't live there.

Exactly. I am a British Citizen but have a residency permit for The Netherlands. The only reason I haven’t applied for a Dutch passport is that Dutch citizenship requires me to relinquish my British Citizenship and I don’t want to do that.

To get British Citizenship, you just arrive at Dover on a rubber dingy.
You get free accomodation and meals and get leave to stay and then British Citizenship after 5 years.

Yes. My UK residency is costing me 6000 pounds plus. And I still have to pay for housing and so on once I get there. It just doesn't seem right somehow. There are resettlement grants in the Highlands but they want younger people :(

You don't want UK citizenship just to be in the Home Counties, or even the Channel Islands. You want it for easy access to the overseas territories; if you're sufficiently rich, the Cayman Islands are your huckleberry; if not Monserrat should be what you look for along with the UK Virgin Islands.
French citizenship has a similar thing going on, and a lot more places to go. Don't just look at the home country; look at ALL the places that passport grants you painless access to, many of which have more autonomy than you'll see back home.
Go _there_ and set up your Plan B base, especially if you're a digital-primary worker or businessman. You don't need to live in the big countries or the big cities anymore, so GTFO and live well and make your money go further.
American who just got UK passport through descent (Father). It’s my plan B and May plant a flag in cheaper northern England. It would make a great base for vacationing throughout Europe without having to transit into the US on a regular basis.

I am UK citizen and I am trying to leave the country. Taxes are high and are currently being raised and likely to go higher in the future and there is a lot of general Government overreach - although less so than mainland Europe. If you must live in Western Europe it's probably the best of a bunch of rotten eggs. But if you can live elsewhere I would probably do that!

That's funny- my grandparents left Scotland in the early 1920's, the government paid people to leave due to 2 years of bad crops and the fish disappearing. They did very well in Canada and I almost feel like a traitor for going back to where they came from. But then I realised that I am moving to better myself, which is what they did :)

Being British myself, I'd advise against British citizenship. This country is going down the drain, with lots of taxes, regulations/controls on the individual, and out of control spending & nanny statism. This is a country which doesn't respect your rights; it determines that all of your rights are "qualified" (ie. null & void). The weather is also shit, the people worship socialism (eg. the NHS) and all this "green" bullshit. Cost of living is skyrocketing because both the Conservatives & Labour are pushing suicidal "net zero" policies. Personally, I can't wait to emigrate out of here.

The passport gives you options mate, it's not necessary that you must live in the UK if you get the passport. Right now, the debate is just about "to get or not to get the passport".

He probably will soon. Although I noticed that this rule does not apply to free zone companies and there will still be no income tax, meaning that you can just pay yourself big salaries and avoid 9% corporate tax that way.

I am also a US citizen whose father is a UK citizen. I want to get a UK passport (I have been living abroad in Asia for over 7 years, and I don't want to return to the US). Did you apply for the passport by yourself, or did you do it through a third party? I want to take the first step, but am not really sure where to start.
I'm not sure how its different but if her dad was born in UK then she should go through register of birth them get the registration cirtificate and after she can apply for passport
I think Irish people have always been able to come to the UK,they did not need passports at all,but because of the EU some years ago they had to get them,to travel between England and Ireland .I read that there are more Irish born people in England ,than there are in Ireland
My mother was born in England in 1950s to an English mother (my grandmother), but my mom never pursued citizenship yet I would like to have dual citizenship, mostly for future opportunities. I'm nearing 50 myself and might like to retire or live elsewhere. Info is so confusing on whether i qualify as my understanding is that birthright via mother was not a thing, but then it became a thing in the early 80s I think...but not sure about folks born prior to that.
Usually British Citizenship is only available through parents, there are some very niche exceptions in relation to grandparents but they are rare, so I would say not.
Contact a lawyer in the UK. Using the 4L section of the new law that started on 07/28/2023, there is a very good chance you can get your UK citizenship. It is very confusing if you look at the UK law yourself, but multiple UK lawyers have assured me that I could qualify and I'm in a similar boat as you. My only problem is that I have to wait until I retire in a few years due to my security clearance. If that wasn't the case, I'd be pursuing it now.
Anyone born in the UK before 1st January 1983 was automatically a British citizen by birth, regardless of the nationality of the parents. Children born abroad were only British if the father was a British citizen otherwise by descent, and the parents were married.
From 1983 - Jun 2006, a child was British at birth if they were
1. Born in the UK to a British mother or a foreign mother with Settled Status 2. Born in the UK [in wedlock] wedlock ti a British father or a foreign father with Settled Status 3. Born abroad to a British mother otherwise by descent or in wedlock to a British father otherwise by descent.

You are already a british citizen, you can apply for a passport. Because your mother was automatically a British citizen, as she was born in the UK before 1983.

I know America has agreement with UK, but how would I go amongst getting one outside googling it. I am currently on a graduate visa which lets me live until 2023 in Uk with freedom to work. But Covid has slowed an already slow government, and UK sites are every way but direct. I am a EU citizen (Portugal) but I am currently living in the UK and holding a Settlement visa (been living in the UK for 7 years) also I am holding a 2 more citizens by heritage (Venezuelan and Chilean). Because of Brexit my rights as a EU National has changed drastically and I am fears on whether my rights are no longer equals and the time line of been out of the country and that’s affect my residency in this country. I have UK & France citizenship like my mother, and my dad has Irish (I was born in Ireland too but am somehow not eligible anymore for it) citizenship. Irish is light years clear, far better than both of the others combined.
You should 1000% be able to get Irish, prove it with your birth certificate and they should give it straight away
As you were born in Ireland to an Irish citizen dad, it makes you automatically Irish citizen. Although I have come across people who have had trouble proving that the are an Irish citizen to get a passport.

Being born in Belfast, pretty good deal as we can hold both Irish & British citizenship from birth.
@Lean Mean Cleaning Machine UK passport holders can get Global Entry for the US where as Irish can't. So if you go US a lot it's more useful.
@Lean Mean Cleaning Machine Useful for some though. I go 3-5x a year for work and it saves me hours. Quite admin heavy to apply but then going to US is easy after for 5 years.

I moved from South Africa to the UK 20 years ago and for the first time I am considering moving back (though I have been advised against this). I used to have this naive, romantic notion I was returning to the land of my ancestors.
The direction this country is moving in is making me very uncomfortable, at least the South African government is not competent enough to brainwash its people, here they have it down to a fine art.

As I read the various web sites I just might be able to swing an Irish passport on the basis of my paternal grandmother being born in Dublin. Not sure of her citizenship status when I was born, though. Hmmm...
An ancestry visa for the U.K. would be easy, both paternal grandparents born in the U.K. (which included Ireland at the time).

I suppose we, asians, from Asia dont really fancy living or seeking employment in EU. We’d prefer british passport with cta access to ireland. Can simply set up the business in ireland, low tax, and eu region. UK citizenship has less required physical presence when it compares to ireland. 4 yrs in total to get citizenship for global talent or founder visa. But, obv if you have family tree then get both haha.
UK will probably go the USA route and tax it's citizens worldwide. That's why I didn't go for it. As a European citizen I am also not convinced the EU won't do the same. So my plan its to get Caribbean citizenship.

I doubt the UK will go the worldwide tax on citizens route. There are so many British expats, for one thing, and there are tax treaties with the major expat destinations. For another, the (happy) reality for the post-Brexit UK is that it will need to be as nimble and open to the wider world beyond the EU as it possibly can.
@@GleeSmee I tend to agree with you if Brexit had been what was cracked up to be. However, looking at the UK mounting unfunded liabilities and a Tory government keen on pursuing a green agenda; I cannot fathom any other result besides this Tory government or Labour going for citizenship based taxation. All in all, I thought better safe than sorry.

Uk has a law where you can't be taxed from two different countries so if you have an American and UK citizenship, it won't matter cause you'll be taxed worldwide anyways

Not from what I remember. If your son lives in the UK 🇬🇧, there might be a way to get a residence permit, then naturalize after living there for a number of years.

What if I have the settled status in the UK as a EU citizen and I leave the UK for 1-2 years. After that Decide to come back and get the UK citizenship. Do I need just 1 year more to stay in the UK or does the countdown start from the beginning and I ll need to wait for another 5-6 years? Appreciate any help or links that I could double check. Thanks
You can watch Tom Bradford videos or book with him to get this question answered. From what I know, if you leave the UK for more than 5 years, then your settled status is gone, as if you never was in the UK. If you come back within 5 years, you continue to build on the years you had previously, so lets say you lived in the UK for 4 years, got settled status, moved away for 2 years and moved back, then your initial 4 years count towards your citizenship.
Prior to you starting your aplication you need to have no more then 450 days out of the uk in the last 5 years and no more then 90 days out of the uk in the last year, hope this helps

i think the best citizenship to get is Neptunian. No taxes, no crazy laws, and plenty of peace and quiet.
The average wind speed on Neptune is 700 mph, faster than the speed of sound here on Earth. I am sure the tax incentives are nice but I feel like the wind would get tiresome.

It’s cheap… I’m eligible for the UK and my wife is eligible for Italian citizenship by descent. Italy’s wait is nearly a decade and when we contacted a law firm that’s on RUclips / the web they wanted about $11k USD.

My great grandfather is Scottish and I’m one generation too many to apply for the ancestry visa… if it was your grandfather you could have applied for an ancestry visa to go to the Uk 🇬🇧. But then would have to live there for 5-6 years until you get your indefinite (permanent residency) then citizenship. I have a couple of friends that have gone through the process.

I think it was a specific generation as so many were paid to leave during the 20's, especially from the north. Now they are trying to resettle the highlands and islands. Go visit though, I bet there are still people around who remember your family, just don't do the clan/tartan thing!

You didn’t say how or if you can get UK citizenship if you’re not an Irish citizen. That would be most of us. So, for example, I have permanent residency in Portugal. I’m applying for citizenship here I could live in Ireland at least the southern part. My sister is getting Irish citizenship and then she can live in the UK because of her Irish citizenship but I don’t think I could with my Portuguese citizenship even if I moved to Ireland. So how would I get British citizenship? Let’s say I just wanted to get it and live in London. Thank you. I’m an American citizen.
If it is possible for you to move to Ireland, you can get Irish citizenship after 5 years or 3 years if you marry an Irish citizen. Once you have Irish citizenship you are then entitled to live and work in the UK. UK citizens can do the reverse, if they want to travel and work freely in the EU.
Don't bother with UK citizenship. Move to Ireland. 5 years later Irish citizenship

If you have it she will
No. British citizen by descent cannot pass down citizenship to children born abroad, it can only be passed on to one generation born outside of the UK. Your child will only be a British citizen if born in the UK.

I have Canadian and USA citizenship, but I recently found out that I qualify for Polish citizenship through my grandfather. Is that something I should look into and even apply for seeing what is happening politically within that region of the world ? Thanks
I would! As long as Poland 🇵🇱 allows dual citizenship which I’m pretty sure they do. It’s good to keep all doors open. I have 3 citizenships 🇨🇦 (born and raised) 🇯🇲 (descent) 🇦🇺 (naturalization). Citizenships = opportunities. You never know how the world will look 10, 15, etc years down the road.
You absolutely should, it gets you access to EU and Shengan zone. You don't have to live there, but you should take for flexibility and opportunities.
You might as well get polish citizenship and bin your Us one, the Canadian one still allows 90 days visa free travel and you don’t have to abide by the double taxation laws
