- In this episode of Hair History we're diving into the most extravagant era of hairstyling in the history of mankind. If you think you've seen it all, just wait unti you hear what ladies from the age of baroque and rococo were up to! I'm also going to demonstrate how to do an authentic 18th century hairstyle on your own hair, not using any wigs or hairpieces.

The things you put your hair through for us! It just looks plain amazing, and pretty authentic to my untrained eye :)
As soon as you put the curling iron on that floured hair I wondered if it smelt delicious like bread baking lol
The bigger the hair, the closer to God. Or I guess the closer to the French Revolution.
While these hairdos were undoubtedly gorgeous, they always give me chills as they often reminded me of aristocrats getting their heads cut off!😖
Is was literally to do with status. That's why it has a competitive spirit to it.
😂 Well... if you were an aristocrat, you were on your way to meet God, so in that sense... 'the higher the hair, the closer to God'
The bigger your hair is, the more beautiful your head would look when chopped off

Gorgeous! I feel the pain of your hair, haha, because I'm totally paranoid about teasing: my hair doesn't get teased easily, and when it does, it's incredibly difficult to loosen back to its original form.
***** Taking it out was horrible haha, but it was worth it! :P
Tip : use (lots of) conditioner before combing them back.

She looks great with most of these period hairstyles. I like this one because with very thick curly hair with lots of body, it wouldnt require nearly as much teasing as most would need 😂 it was great to have in the 80s!

Rachel Easley And how much conditioner was used to remove all tangles...
They had to use wire frames for their hair which required a great deal of pomade, as you said. However, the hair was not washed all that frequently and the pomade would go rancid. This caused skin irritations and an unpleasant smell. There was plenty of lice but everyone had lice and it was considered normal. Also, the wig powder that they would put on their own hair before putting on a wig had powdered gold in it and that made it quite expensive. Ladies did not let their hair down at night and so they had to sleep practically sitting up because of their hairstyles.
Where can I find more information on this? The internet has proven to be less than helpful...
@@jiltedlittle6868 that's because it's untrue. I'd recommend the podcast on the topic by American Duchess. They go into lots of detail and it's really well researched.

What I want to know is how long it took for you to get your hair back to its original state and how much hair fell out haha
You need to find a louse pick to show how to dislodge the lice in a finished hairdo. Kudos on your knowledge. You do a great job and make it interesting. I intend to watch more of your videos!

I have a client that saves the hair from her brushes & even shower to "rat" into hair cushions. It actually works great for volume at the crown.....!!

+Thamy Darkangel Depends on your hair. For me it slips out even if I don't want it to, some others will spends hours carefully combing it out. Does your hair get tangled easily?

I don't think I've seen anyone do this as well and as authentically as you!! I absolutely love this look on you it suites you quite well. By the way invest in a good boar bristle backcombing brush it will make your life SO much easier and keep you from getting carpal tunnel lol.

Does anyone have a hint what to do with hair that just doesn't react to teasing? No matter what I do and how long I do it, my (thick, slightly curly) hair just falls back into place as if nothing happened.

As a man, I just have to say holy hell. I watched Elizabeth the golden age and was curious about how crazy hairstyles came to be. And its amazing the work ladies put in. Because men, most anyway, do the bare minimum. Unless theyre jersey shore types.
Actually, there were quite some epoches where men had to get their hair styled as well. All those locks and curls didn't come out of nowhere. Even my dad still slept with a hair net some decades ago to keep his natural curls in order
You should check male fashion from the 17-18th century. The complete opposite of the bare minimum lol

Just a suggestion if you ever do this again. I don’t think hair spray has enough “sticking” power for the flour. Even if you took hair conditioner and rubbed just a dollop between your hands and smoothed it over your hair I think would have provided the moisture for the powder. Also, baby powder works amazingly well to “whiten” the hair. Don’t ask me how I know, lol!

Ziya It's pretty hard to find contemporary visual material on historical hair styling- it's mostly just written accounts. I usually feel lucky when I find one picture that looks similar to what I did in the video, haha!

how do u get rid of teasing & powder...do u get a lot of breakage
Start at the tip if brushing it out, and soap or shampoo would remove the powder

+Golden Carter I'm just an enthousiast with a lifelong interest in art history :) I studied Celtic languages & culture and took some art history classes in uni, but that's it.
Those hairstyles were so popular that it made many people lose their heads.

Of course it was, but when it happened it sparked an interest in the classical era. The effects of that are felt all throughout post-renaissance history
